Gerik bus crash: 'I'm sorry, the brakes stopped working' says driver

Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, 39, tearfully apologized from his hospital bed for the tragic bus accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on Monday  (June 9) morning.  The chartered bus overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, while traveling from Jertih to Tanjung Malim. 00:33Amirul, a bus driver since 2016, claimed the air brakes failed completely, leaving him unable

00:40to stop or change gears.

00:42He claimed he managed to avoid four other vehicles before the accident occurred on a bend in the

00:47road.

00:48Amirul also claimed he shouted warnings to alert the students, though many in the back were

00:54asleep.

00:55He has issued eighteen summonses against Amirul, thirteen for speeding, three for not wearing

01:01a seatbelt, one for lacking a third brake light, and one for the accident itself.

01:07A special task force has been formed to investigate the crash.

01:11Amirul is currently receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital.
