00:00January 10th, 1973, the Bataclan, Paris, France.
00:05Progressive rock pioneer Genesis is on stage at the iconic theater.
00:10The band is riding high on a wave of critical acclaim for its fourth album, Foxtrot.
00:16Foxtrot was the first album that I felt sounded like they should sound.
00:22Tonight's Parisian audience is spellbound by enigmatic frontman and founding member, Peter Gabriel.
00:28He was a pretty crazy frontman.
00:32I was endlessly having to go off and buy new tambourines because he'd smashed them the night before on stage.
00:39To Peter's left on keys is Chord King, Tony Banks.
00:43You can't have a prog rock band without a keyboard maestro.
00:48And on bass guitar, Mike Rutherford.
00:50He, son of a gun, just got better and better and took on more and more responsibility
00:56until he was someone you cannot imagine Genesis without.
01:00Completing the classic Genesis lineup is the band's two newest recruits,
01:05the unassuming Steve Hackett on lead guitar.
01:08Steve Hackett's magic is that he's all about atmosphere.
01:11He didn't want to be a big Axeman hero, even though he's quite capable of it.
01:18A fantastic musician.
01:21And a precociously talented young drummer named Bill Collins.
01:25An unbelievably accomplished drummer.
01:29But within the five-piece band, there is a growing tension between frontman Peter and keyboardist Tony.
01:35Tony Banks wants Genesis to be seen as serious musicians.
01:39It was practically written into my contract when I joined the band.
01:43It's like, we all sit down to play.
01:45Are you all right with that?
01:47But some band members feel the live shows are selling them short.
01:52Genesis had great music early on, but we didn't have a great stage show.
01:56We were a band that didn't boogie.
01:58Genesis deliberately did not boogie.
02:00Montybrown is on the band.
