00:00:00Bob Greasy, happy to have you with us. Both these clubs are 5 and 3, and right now, you have to say that Miami is under the gun, and so is Dan Marino.
00:00:11Well, Marino has been struggling, but it's been because of his offensive line is not playing as well. They've had some injuries, and also, they're wide receivers.
00:00:18But the main thing is, the rest of the league is getting a book on him, Jay. They're not blitzing him as much. They know they can't sack him.
00:00:23They're just gonna try to get a little pressure, and they're sitting deep in zone, so he has to be more patient and take the underneath stuff.
00:00:29The Patriots have been on the go, and the reason? Steve Grogan, back at the controls.
00:00:34Just the opposite of Marino. He's been out for a while, and he says the time away has allowed him to realize that he has to be more patient.
00:00:41Not always go for the big plays, but just call the running plays, and then get the plays downfield, and keep the drives going. He's more patient. Marino needs to be.
00:00:49The Dolphins coming off a loss at Detroit. Don Shula, the man, he can motivate them, although he's not had a lot of success here.
00:00:56He says this is the crossroads of their season. He says we're doing all the things that losers do, and he has to motivate them today.
00:01:02And across from him, his former player, Raymond Berry, who's had great success against the AFC East in his short tenure.
00:01:11Raymond said that he has to, he told his players that they have to play a lot better today, because he knows he's gonna be outcoached.
00:01:17The other thing is, the Patriots have their kind of day. It's cold, it's wet, and windy. This is an ideal day for the Patriots.
00:01:27A crowd of better than 61,000 coming into this stadium as they battle these mists here today.
00:01:35And it's kind of a windy day, although there won't be a great deal of wind down on the field, apparently, as we look at the flags on the goalpost.
00:01:43Miami is going to kick off.
00:01:47The Dolphins lost at Detroit 31-21 last week.
00:01:52New England defeated Tampa Bay 32-14 after being down 14-0.
00:01:58Claude Reves will put the ball in play. The rookie out of Tennessee, out of Sunset High School.
00:02:06And back deep, Stephan Starring.
00:02:12Starring.
00:02:15Very talented return man in the middle. And we're underway.
00:02:20Starring coming up at the 8-yard line, fumbles, picks it up, and falls down, and comes up with a footfall at the 15-yard line.
00:02:29Joe Carter for Miami was downfield to touch him down.
00:02:33Steve Grogan, number 14, starts the quarterback with Collins, James, Morgan, Fryer, and Dawson.
00:02:42Guy Morris is at center, playing there for the injured Pete Brock, Hannah, and Fairchild, Holloway, and Moore at the tackles.
00:02:50First down from the 15-yard line.
00:02:53No, no, no, no.
00:03:03And Craig James across the 20. James averaging 4.6 per carry.
00:03:09Hit by Hugh Green, number 55, and Jackie Shipp, number 50.
00:03:13That is Charles and Bo Camper up front for the Dolphins.
00:03:17Rudzinski, Shipp, Brown, and the newcomer, Hugh Green of the linebackers.
00:03:23Frankfurt with Judson, Glenn Backwood, and Bud Brown in the secondary.
00:03:27A pickup of 7 yards on the play, second down and three.
00:03:37James, close to the first down. Looks like he's about a yard short.
00:03:43Bud Brown, the free safety, number 43, making the stop.
00:03:46George Little got the start at nose tackle for the Dolphins with Bo Camper being out.
00:03:51Shula said he was going to try and spot play him a little bit today to try and get him through the whole ballgame.
00:03:56But that leaves Mike Charles at the defensive end.
00:03:58A key matchup today will be the nose tackle, Little against Guy Morris, number 75, for the Patriots.
00:04:04Double tight ends now as Ramsey has joined Lynn Dawson.
00:04:09And we've got Mosey Tutupu in there replacing James.
00:04:12So Collins at Tutupu. This is Tutupu, and he's got the first down.
00:04:18Or was it Withers? It was. It was. Robert Withers knocked out of bounds.
00:04:23First down, William Judson, 49, ran him out.
00:04:27With Grogan in there, they like to get the run going.
00:04:29They like to run this play right in here.
00:04:31But the other thing he likes to do is go to his wide receiver, Stanley Morgan, coming across the middle.
00:04:36And what he'll do is send Fryer deep down the middle to take care of the weak safety, which will be here.
00:04:41You'll see him run, and then at the right time, he'll throw this play-action pass, and he likes to get it to Stanley Morgan.
00:04:48First down at the 29-yard line.
00:04:51New England, 14th on offense in the National Football League.
00:04:56Staying on the ground with James.
00:04:59James crashes to the 35-yard line, a pickup of about five.
00:05:04He shifts number 50 there to make the tackle.
00:05:07The Patriots are 15th in rushing, averaging 3.8 per carry.
00:05:12They rank 15th in passing, averaging 52.8%.
00:05:19Grogan has not yet thrown the football.
00:05:23Second down and five.
00:05:27In motion, Fryer, James again, and a first down at the 41-yard line.
00:05:38A pickup of six.
00:05:39As again, it was Jackie Shipp, the inside linebacker.
00:05:42Number one draft choice out of Oklahoma two years ago.
00:05:46Number 50 made the stop.
00:05:48Good blocking on the right side of that line.
00:05:5066 to the right of your screen is Fairchild.
00:05:53He and Moore, 67.
00:05:54Double-team bettors.
00:05:55Bettor goes over on his back.
00:05:57Good four or five yards.
00:05:58Good play for the Patriots.
00:06:00James already has 20 yards on four carries.
00:06:08The pitch comes to James.
00:06:10He's at the 45.
00:06:11We have a penalty marker down.
00:06:13The first flag of the afternoon.
00:06:15Stop made by Mike Charles, 71, and Mark Brown, 51.
00:06:19A pickup of seven if the play stands.
00:06:23The referee today is Freddie Wyant, right there, former West Virginia University quarterback.
00:06:38Illegal motion against Steve Moore, number 67.
00:06:42Chuck Studley is going to be trying a lot of different things to stop the run here.
00:06:46Hugh Green, 55, plays off the block of Collins and gets knocked off his feet.
00:06:51That is one thing he needs his linebackers to do.
00:06:54They'll keep their feet.
00:06:55They're looking for some leadership from Hugh Green.
00:06:57That time, the Patriots and Collins got the best of them.
00:07:01Dolphins ranking 24th on defense in the NFL.
00:07:06First and 15, James.
00:07:11That's Collins out to the 44-yard line.
00:07:14Tony Collins, who's averaging 3.7 for carry, picked up nine.
00:07:19Paul Lankford, number 44, on the tackle, the corner man.
00:07:23Steve Grogan, since he's been back in the lineup, Jay, for the Patriots,
00:07:26has been calling all of his own plays.
00:07:28Before that, Raymond Berry was calling them, and he really got a lot of criticism
00:07:33from the fans and from some of the players about being too conservative.
00:07:36With Grogan, that's not the case.
00:07:39Second down and seven.
00:07:41And now, it is Grogan going down.
00:07:47Well, a little try at something special there didn't go.
00:07:52That's Grogan's call, as he will hand the ball after five or six running plays
00:07:56or tosses it to James.
00:07:58James stops and throws it back.
00:08:00Now, this is a little bit different than you normally see this play.
00:08:03Everything is a little bit different.
00:08:05It's a little bit different.
00:08:08Now, this is a little bit different than you normally see this play.
00:08:10Everything was covered.
00:08:12The Dolphins were deep in their zone coverage, and he just threw it away.
00:08:16And that was the first pass that Grogan has attempted today.
00:08:20Green Bay has a field goal to take an early lead over the Chicago Bears.
00:08:27Third down and seven, and the Dolphins in a prevent defense.
00:08:31Grogan out of the shotgun.
00:08:33Incomplete. He was trying to get it to Irving Fryer.
00:08:37Coverage by the linebacker out there, Alex Moyer.
00:08:41And punting time for Rich Camarillo and the New England Patriots.
00:08:46Camarillo is averaging 44.4.
00:08:50Bob, we have four of the best kicking people in the game here today.
00:08:54Camarillo and Franklin for the Patriots.
00:08:57And, of course, Ravez and Robey for Don Shula's Dolphins.
00:09:03Bigarito is back to receive this punt.
00:09:11Bigarito at the 19, over the 20.
00:09:15And down he goes at the 21-yard line.
00:09:19Coming downfield to make the tackle was Ed Reynolds, number 95.
00:09:24And we'll be back with more tomorrow.
00:09:27Dominated the series, but they've had a tough time here at Foxboro.
00:09:31A 36-yard punt, a two-yard return a moment ago.
00:09:35And Miami setting up shop for the first time offensively.
00:09:39That series between the two teams, Jay, really doesn't tell you how it's been the last nine years.
00:09:45The Dolphins have only won two times in a row.
00:09:47And they've had a tough time.
00:09:49And they've had a tough time.
00:09:51And they've had a tough time.
00:09:53It doesn't tell you how it's been the last nine years.
00:09:55The Dolphins have only won two times in the last nine trips to Foxboro.
00:09:59It's been a very tough place for the Dolphins to play.
00:10:02Dan Marino at quarterback.
00:10:0559.8% completion rate.
00:10:09He brings them out.
00:10:14High formation from the 21-yard line.
00:10:19Play action.
00:10:21And the pass is complete to the near sideline to Clayton.
00:10:24Ronnie Lippitt, number 42, had the coverage a six-yard gain.
00:10:29Marino with Natan, Bennett, Harris, Clayton, and Hardy.
00:10:35And at the moment, they have Jensen in there as a wide receiver.
00:10:39Green, Foster, Stevenson, Taves, and Lee.
00:10:42And that's the key, Jay, the different offensive line.
00:10:44Ronnie Lee starting at right tackle.
00:10:46Cleland Green moves over to left.
00:10:48Be interesting to see how those two tackles hold up today.
00:10:51Johnson, 87 now at tight end.
00:10:53Lorenzo Hampton, 27, is in the backfield.
00:10:56Jensen comes in motion.
00:10:58They give it to Hampton.
00:11:00And Hampton cracks near a first down as he got it over the 30-yard line.
00:11:04Wrapped up by the linebacker Steve Nelson, number 57.
00:11:07Sims with Owens and Adams up front for the Patriots.
00:11:10Sims is really playing a lot better this year.
00:11:13Good linebacking here.
00:11:14And Tippett outstanding with Nelson, McGrew, and Blackmon.
00:11:19In the secondary, Lippitt.
00:11:21A talented Raymond Claiborne.
00:11:23Bowling James and Fred Marion.
00:11:25Third down and one coming for Miami.
00:11:28First quarter, no score.
00:11:29Foxborough, Massachusetts.
00:11:36Ron Davenport is in that backfield now.
00:11:39And the handoff goes to Davenport.
00:11:42And it looks like he's got the first down.
00:11:44Nelson was the man that wrapped him up, number 57,
00:11:47along with Kenneth Sims, 77, and Dennis Owens, 98.
00:11:53Talk about Andre Tippett, number 56, out of Iowa.
00:11:56He's a dandy.
00:11:57Two of the finest linebackers in the game.
00:11:5956 Tippett for the Patriots playing off the block.
00:12:02And also Hugh Green for the Dolphins.
00:12:04Jay will be following the progress of these two linebackers throughout the day.
00:12:08Luckhurst, the 28-yard field goal.
00:12:11Schubert, a 24-yard field goal to give the Giants an early lead.
00:12:17Marino, going long downfield.
00:12:20And the catch is made by Mark Clayton.
00:12:24Clayton had a step on Ronnie Lippitt.
00:12:27First down at the 28-yard line.
00:12:3039-yard pass play.
00:12:33Coming into the ballgame, as you look at the protection for Marino,
00:12:36first down, it's very, very good.
00:12:39Marino throws the ball, good coverage by Lippitt.
00:12:42Stride for stride, but the ball is so well thrown,
00:12:45and Clayton has such a knack for getting open at the right time when the ball gets there.
00:12:50That is the first long pass that Marino and Clayton have teamed up for in quite some time.
00:12:59Jensen is in there as a wide receiver.
00:13:01Both tight ends, Hardy, 84, and Johnson, 87, are there.
00:13:05First down, Miami.
00:13:08Jensen went in motion.
00:13:09Hand off to Hampton.
00:13:11Hampton still on his feet inside the 20-yard line.
00:13:15A strong safety, Roland James, number 38, to make the play.
00:13:19Pickup of about 9 or 10.
00:13:22Excellent effort here by Hampton.
00:13:24It's going to be key to watch the number 60, Hayes,
00:13:27pulling and trapping on the linebacker, Blackman.
00:13:31Hampton goes inside and then just runs through Julius Adams, 85's block.
00:13:36Good tough running by the Dolphins, but it's going to be key today, Jay,
00:13:39for that offensive line to see how they can handle this defense for the Patriots.
00:13:44First down for Miami.
00:13:48Jensen again in motion.
00:13:50The pitch back to Davenport.
00:13:52Davenport is down to the 7-yard line.
00:13:55Davenport cut down by Fred Marion, the free safety number 31.
00:14:00A pickup of 11.
00:14:03Jensen went in motion, and he did some good blocking here.
00:14:05Well, he's in there for some reason.
00:14:07It's because he's blocking right here.
00:14:09You see him blocking on Blackman, 55.
00:14:11Now, Jensen started the ballgame, Jay, and when I saw that in there,
00:14:14I knew he was going to be in there trying to block on somebody
00:14:17because he's a big, strong guy.
00:14:19Even though he's a former quarterback,
00:14:21his block was key to springing Davenport for that good run.
00:14:25Jensen is out.
00:14:26Duriel Harris, 82, is in there.
00:14:29First and goal to go from about the 7-yard line.
00:14:34A quick toss and incomplete.
00:14:38Now, here's the flag.
00:14:40The flag is thrown.
00:14:41Ronnie Lippitt was there against Mark Clayton.
00:14:46That time Marino just took it and tried for the toss on the flag pattern.
00:14:54You see the end of the play here.
00:14:57Really can't tell from that angle whether who, one player or the other,
00:15:02impeded the progress of the other to try and catch the football.
00:15:10Fred Wyant, the referee, has indicated it will go against the Patriots.
00:15:20He's still discussing things with his crew.
00:15:23Dave Moss, Jerry Bergman, Joe Haines, Dick Hantak, Bill Quimby,
00:15:26and Chuck McCollum here working with him.
00:15:35Illegal chuck, number 42, first down.
00:15:39Call against Ronnie Lippitt, an illegal chuck and a first down at the 4.
00:15:43It wasn't pass interference.
00:15:45It was illegal chuck 5 yards downfield from the line of scrimmage
00:15:48that was called on Lippitt.
00:15:50The Dolphins have been passing more this season.
00:15:5384 on their way to the Super Bowl, a faster attempt at 55% of their plays.
00:15:58First half of this year they've been up around 61%.
00:16:03Hardy going in motion, now sets to the left side on the wing.
00:16:07And off goes to Davenport, touchdown Miami.
00:16:15Four-yard touchdown for Davenport, his fifth touchdown of the season
00:16:20out of Louisville.
00:16:22Young man born in Bermuda.
00:16:25Watch the block right here of Jeff Taze as he comes around
00:16:28and gets a block on Rembert, number 52, as Marino will hand off to Davenport.
00:16:34Gets through, there's a nice hole.
00:16:36He actually misses the block, but there was enough of a hole there
00:16:39that Davenport could get up and score the touchdown.
00:16:43The rookie, Boak Rivais, out of Tennessee, will attempt the point.
00:16:47Armstrong will hold.
00:16:51It's up and it's good.
00:16:53A very impressive drive by the Miami Dolphins.
00:16:57They lead 7-0.
00:17:02We're not a company, but we'll give you a chance to work with us.
00:17:07Rivais kicking off.
00:17:10Steffens starring at the 20, the 25, steps through at the 30,
00:17:15out to the 33-yard line.
00:17:17Robert Sowell, number 45, making the stop for the specialty unit.
00:17:22Watch the block of Tony Nathan on the touchdown as he blocks to the outside.
00:17:26The offensive line, Foster, 61, who was a tight end.
00:17:29Cleveland Green, 74, playing on the left side.
00:17:32As we look at it from the defense and from behind the defense,
00:17:35as Rembert gives a little alley-oh to Taze,
00:17:39but good play by Davenport getting into the end zone.
00:17:44The Dolphins made six first downs on seven plays.
00:17:48Eddie Murray's 32-yard field goal has put Detroit up on Minnesota.
00:17:53First down for the Patriots, and off to Craig James.
00:17:57James likes to get that football.
00:18:00He wants the football, and in recent weeks he has gotten it more often.
00:18:04He's stopped by Doug Betters, number 75, after a gain up to the 37-yard line.
00:18:09One of the keys today, Jay, will be the offensive line play,
00:18:12especially the center, Guy Moore, 75, and Hannah, 73.
00:18:15You saw his left arm out, maybe, on 99-little.
00:18:18Double-teaming little, and if you can control the head, the nose tackle,
00:18:22you can usually run up the middle.
00:18:26Brogan wants to put it up.
00:18:28He swings it out to James.
00:18:31James has a first down.
00:18:33Bumped out of bounds near the 45-yard line by Mark Brown, number 51.
00:18:38James had caught 10 passes for 190 yards coming into today's game, a pickup of eight.
00:18:44It's a little screen pass.
00:18:45Brogan looks downfield.
00:18:46As you see the lineman at the top of your screen going out, pick up some blocks.
00:18:50Brzezinski, 59, is knocked off his feet by Fairchild, and then James gets what he can,
00:18:55but it's a good, safe pass for Brogan to get something going.
00:19:09That's James.
00:19:15James gets a couple.
00:19:18Hugh Green, 55, and Mike Charles, 71.
00:19:22Green's play has been improving every week.
00:19:24Washington, Atlanta, now 3-3 as Mosley's kick the 39-yard field goal.
00:19:31Buffalo's on top, 7-0.
00:19:33Greg Bell scoring from 14 yards out.
00:19:36That goal has tied up the Tampa Bay Giants game at 3-all.
00:19:42Second down and 7 over the middle, complete.
00:19:46And to the 47-yard line goes Tony Collins.
00:19:50Collins came into today's game with 32 catches, pickup of about 4,
00:19:55as Mark Brown, 51, and Jackie Shipp, 50, came through to make the tackle.
00:20:02Earlier in the season, J. Raymond Berry was fooling around,
00:20:05messing around with his running backs, putting Mosley to Tupou
00:20:08and then Weathers into the lineup.
00:20:10He finally wanted James and Collins in there together,
00:20:13and Collins has been blocking very well for James,
00:20:16who has ran very well the last two weeks.
00:20:19Third down.
00:20:22Brogan.
00:20:25Oh, I was about to say complete.
00:20:28Stanley Morgan dropped it right in the bread basket.
00:20:31Well, you won't see that happen very often.
00:20:34Paul Lankford had the coverage, but it was very soft
00:20:37and a mistake for Stanley Morgan.
00:20:41You saw Raymond Berry, the X-wide receiver, pat him on the back,
00:20:44said that's going to happen a few times.
00:20:46This has happened to Morgan a few times this year, Jay.
00:20:50It seems like the start of a ball game, he'll drop one,
00:20:53but he always comes back and makes everybody forget about it
00:20:56because he makes them big plays.
00:20:58Second punt of the day for Rich Camarillo.
00:21:01Tommy Vigarito downfield.
00:21:05Camarillo angles to the far sideline.
00:21:07He's been doing a good job.
00:21:09It is picked up by Vigarito, though,
00:21:11and out he comes to the 31-yard line.
00:21:14Mosley to Tupou was there to pick him up.
00:21:1734-yard punt, 17-yard return.
00:21:20We'll be back with more in a moment.
00:21:24Jeep Cherokee has some advantages you ought to look into,
00:21:28like superior cargo room and room for five
00:21:31with a choice of two or four doors.
00:21:33Go back and take a look at Tommy Vigarito on that last punt return.
00:21:37He was looking forward.
00:21:38It looked like he wanted Lyle Blackwood, 42,
00:21:40at the bottom of your screen to catch it,
00:21:42but it was the longest punt return this year for the Dolphins.
00:21:45And great to see Vigarito battle back.
00:21:48Davenport, who's having a fine first half,
00:21:52is near a first down at the 41-yard line.
00:21:56Came up just about a foot short, it looked like.
00:21:59Roland James, 38, and Raymond Claiborne, 26,
00:22:02ran him out over there, and he is just short of the marker.
00:22:06Jeff, I mean, Jay, I'm impressed with Jeff Taves.
00:22:10The offensive line of the Dolphins has been reshuffled this year
00:22:14because of injuries, and really for this ballgame,
00:22:16Jeff Taves stepping in a couple weeks ago,
00:22:19playing very well early on in the ballgame.
00:22:22Durial Harris, 82 now, and there has replaced Jensen.
00:22:26Lorenzo Hampton in the backfield.
00:22:31Second and one.
00:22:33Moreno steps up and throws.
00:22:35Penalty marker down.
00:22:37Pass is complete to the 45-yard line of the Patriots to Mark Clayton.
00:22:43The tackle made by Lippitt.
00:22:45A pickup of 15 if it stands.
00:22:48He might have a holding call.
00:22:51That's it, but it's going to be against the Patriots,
00:22:54holding against New England on the play.
00:23:03Ball going against Andre Tippett, number 56.
00:23:07It will be refused.
00:23:08They'll take the play and set up shop at the Patriot 45-yard line.
00:23:124-47 left to play in the first quarter.
00:23:17He gets out in front of Pittsburgh as Matt Barr kicked a 34-yard field goal.
00:23:21That's another series similar to this one,
00:23:23where Cleveland has not ever beaten Pittsburgh in Three Rivers Stadium.
00:23:28Jensen back in the Miami lineup, and he comes in motion.
00:23:32A little delay to Davenport, and nothing there.
00:23:37It was Sims, 77, and Tippett, 56.
00:23:40Spelling that one out in fine fashion, and look at Sims.
00:23:43He's fired up.
00:23:45Sims trying to get him going on defense.
00:23:47Well, Andre Tippett right here, Andre Tippett and Ronnie Lee,
00:23:52Ken Sims on number 77 inside, and Ronnie Lee trying to block on Sims,
00:23:58not getting it done.
00:23:59Sims and Tippett both coming out of the draft last year, three years ago.
00:24:04Sims the number one draft choice, Tippett the number two.
00:24:07They're both playing very well on the left side for the Patriots.
00:24:11A loss of one on the play, second down and 11.
00:24:15Nathan and Davenport are in blitz, and he had to get it away quickly.
00:24:22They were coming, the safety blitz, with Roland James, number 38, coming across,
00:24:27and Marino had to get rid of it very fast.
00:24:31That's a good example, Jay, right there,
00:24:33why Marino does not get sacked very many times, only five all year,
00:24:38because if he sees somebody coming free,
00:24:40he's not afraid to go ahead and throw the ball away.
00:24:43Marino now three out of four, 60 yards passing, third down and 11.
00:24:57And Marino may have a free play.
00:24:59Well, he's knocked down. He couldn't get the pass away.
00:25:09Encroachment, number 85.
00:25:15Julius Adams, the oldest defensive lineman in the National Football League.
00:25:20You see to the right of your screen,
00:25:22it's pretty difficult to pull a defensive lineman off sides
00:25:26when the quarterback is away from the center in a shotgun position.
00:25:30I don't know what Julie's problem was, but it's five yards from the Dolphins.
00:25:35Third down and six.
00:25:41Looks like Marino might have called an audible here out of the shotgun.
00:25:44He goes to the far sideline, and it is incomplete.
00:25:49Duriel Harris, the intended receiver.
00:25:53Raymond Claiborne had the coverage.
00:25:58Claiborne is complaining that there was offensive pass interference.
00:26:02Top of your screen, Duriel Harris and Raymond Claiborne, good coverage.
00:26:07Now, Marino throws the ball, and it's just going to be a jump ball.
00:26:12Well, there was a little shove there, maybe.
00:26:18I didn't see anything that could be called interference either way on that one, Jay.
00:26:22Reggie Roby, out of Iowa.
00:26:25He's averaging 45.6.
00:26:28Irving Fryer downfield, and the ball out of bounds on the far sideline.
00:26:34Deep in patriot territory, good job by Reggie Roby.
00:26:383.23 left to play in the first quarter.
00:26:45Who has expanded your TV picture by adding four new corners?
00:26:51It's between the answers at some story. Join us next Saturday.
00:26:5528-yard punt by Roby, and the Patriots starting from their own 13-yard line.
00:27:03Greg James getting it out just over the 15, stop made by Brudzinski, 59.
00:27:10Steve Drogan is one of only two quarterbacks now in the National Football League who call their own plays.
00:27:15As we mentioned a little earlier, he now calls them.
00:27:18Raymond Berry says, he's calling them the way I wanted to call them, only better.
00:27:22And Chuck Studley, the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins, is calling the defensive signals to try and stop what Drogan likes to call.
00:27:29The other man is Malone at Pittsburgh, but he's not playing today, I don't believe.
00:27:42Charles leading the way, number 71. Hugh Green, 55.
00:27:47Update time, NFL 85.
00:27:51Jay Buffalo grabs a 7-0 lead at home against Cincinnati on this 14-yard scoring run by Greg Bell.
00:27:57Of course, the Bills led the Eagles 17-0 a week ago in the fourth quarter, and somehow found a way to lose it.
00:28:03Let's go back to Jay Randolph.
00:28:06All right, Bob Costas, and we look forward to your updates all afternoon.
00:28:10Loss of one on that last play, third down and eight.
00:28:13Drogan under pressure, throws, it's complete.
00:28:17I don't know if they got the first down, he got it to the tight end.
00:28:20Derrick Ramsey, number 88, and Hugh Green was right there to make the tackle, and it is the first down.
00:28:30Now that's a big play for the Patriots, a pickup of eight yards.
00:28:33Ramsey, in 85, 16 catches for 151 yards, that was number 17.
00:28:42Ramsey, came here in a trade with the Raiders in 83 that involved Dan Hesselbeck.
00:28:48He's out of Kentucky, but his first down at the 23-yard line.
00:28:52A minute and 26 to go, first quarter, Miami leads 7-0.
00:29:00James, to the outside, across the 30, to the 32-yard line.
00:29:06He was wrapped up by Lankford, number 44.
00:29:11He got about nine on the play.
00:29:13Defensively, Jay, what Chuck Studley wants to do is stop the running game first
00:29:18and force Drogan into must-pass situations.
00:29:21He feels as though if he can pass when he wants to on first or second down,
00:29:25second and short yardage, and run when he wants to, if he's got them both going,
00:29:29he's going to be a much tougher quarterback than if he can take one of them away from him.
00:29:32Patriots ranking 15th in rushing, and Miami 20th in runching.
00:29:37Both these clubs have run the ball rather well here in the first period of play.
00:29:41Craig James, he got the first down as he's near the 35-yard line
00:29:46before he was shoved back by big Doug Betters, number 75.
00:29:51Betters, out of Nevada, Reno, the defensive lineman of the year in 1984,
00:29:57so voted by the media in southern Florida, and a very strong performer.
00:30:04Betters has been playing well, Jay.
00:30:06The man they really miss in the middle of that defense is Bob Baumar,
00:30:09the all-pro, the pro bowler from the last few years, and like we've been saying,
00:30:13good run defense starts at the nose tackle.
00:30:15If he can handle the center, then you can usually stop the run.
00:30:20And we come to the end of the first quarter here in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
00:30:24The Dolphins 7, the Patriots nothing.
00:30:28There's the tell-tale sign of high-quality Owens coming through.
00:30:34Bob Greasy with you.
00:30:35We talked at the top of the show about the play of the offensive lines
00:30:38and these clubs trying to get the ball going along the ground.
00:30:41We've seen it here in the first quarter.
00:30:42I've been impressed the way the Dolphins have run the ball so far,
00:30:45and the Patriots, of course, are running it.
00:30:47And Studley, the defensive coordinator, is going to try and stop it.
00:30:50That's the first thing he's going to try to do.
00:30:52But with the Dolphins' makeshift offensive line changing Cleveland Greens
00:30:56to the left side from the right,
00:30:58I've been very impressed the way their coordination has been on the run.
00:31:02Patriots with a first down.
00:31:06And Groban over the middle.
00:31:08It's complete to Tony Collins.
00:31:10And Collins is up in the 43-yard line.
00:31:14Hugh Green, 55, Mark Brown, 51 on the tackle.
00:31:17Pickup of eight.
00:31:19Take a look at these statistics over the first period of play.
00:31:23Patriots controlled the time of possession in fine fashion,
00:31:26but they're down 7-0.
00:31:33Second down and two.
00:31:42Frank James.
00:31:44James has the first down.
00:31:48Pickup of seven as he got near midfield.
00:31:52Look at some of this crowd, and let's go to the telestrator.
00:31:55Robert?
00:31:56That's Morris right here.
00:31:57He'll get out and cut off, seal off number 50, Jackie Shipp,
00:32:01from getting over and getting into the pursuit.
00:32:0375, Morris, right there.
00:32:05Now, he's got him right where he wants him.
00:32:07He can't get over in.
00:32:08You see this big lane over there?
00:32:09If you can stop it right here.
00:32:11Right here is a big lane that Shipp needs to be over there filling.
00:32:18Come back live, number 30, Mosey Tutupu.
00:32:21Now in the backfield with Collins.
00:32:23Brogan on first down, going long downfield for Friar.
00:32:27And go!
00:32:28But there's a penalty marker down.
00:32:31A flag is down, and I think they'll bring it back.
00:32:36Brogan to Friar, 50 yards, but will it stand?
00:32:45They're going to bring it back.
00:32:52Well, it looked pretty, Bob, but it doesn't go.
00:32:56It's a tough break for the Patriots,
00:32:58especially after Friar and Morgan worked all that choreography
00:33:01out on that little dance they did.
00:33:03But it's a very tough call to go against the Patriots.
00:33:07Brogan hitting them in the middle,
00:33:08hitting them in the middle with the running game,
00:33:10picking the right time to go upstairs.
00:33:22Didn't get a call on who that was on.
00:33:25Illegal procedure, illegal motion.
00:33:27Probably one of the receivers or one of the backs
00:33:31moved a little bit ahead of time.
00:33:33So it nullifies the big play,
00:33:35and it is first and 15 from the 45.
00:33:39Brogan's got some time now.
00:33:42Got to scramble out of there
00:33:45and is out of bounds at the 40-yard line.
00:33:49As Mike Charles came over to make the play, number 71.
00:33:54Pretty good coverage that time.
00:33:56Good coverage downfield, and Mike Charles hustling over.
00:33:59I can remember a time not too many years ago, Jay,
00:34:01when Brogan would have taken off and gained a lot of yards.
00:34:05He says, I don't run anymore. I just scramble around.
00:34:08He's only run 10 times this year for a total of 11 yards,
00:34:12and I don't think that is going to be a big concern
00:34:15for Chuck Studley's defense.
00:34:17Miami getting into a prevent defense now,
00:34:19as the Patriots have just had their first sack,
00:34:24and it is second down 20 from the 40-yard line.
00:34:33Tony Collins over the 45 out to midfield,
00:34:37and he gets a nice chunk back.
00:34:39Picked up 10.
00:34:41Bud Brown, number 43, on the stop.
00:34:45You know, talk about Hugh Green,
00:34:47the former All-American at Pittsburgh,
00:34:49who made the move from Tampa Bay, number 55,
00:34:51and talked about his improving play each week
00:34:54since he's joined the Dolphins.
00:34:55This is one of the things they wanted to do,
00:34:57get him more involved in the pass rush,
00:34:59moving him all around.
00:35:00Week after week, they're giving him more responsibility
00:35:03on defense, and he's able to come up and make some plays,
00:35:06but this is what the Dolphin defense needs,
00:35:08is somebody to come in and make some big plays
00:35:11and really get this defense fired up.
00:35:13Cedric Jones, 83, is in there now,
00:35:16joining Morgan and Fryer as wide receivers
00:35:19from the shotgun on third and 10.
00:35:21Brogan, under pressure, gets it away.
00:35:23Intercepted!
00:35:25Intercepted on the far sideline
00:35:27by William Judson, number 49, in the right corner.
00:35:31It's his 13th career interception,
00:35:34his second of this season.
00:35:36Earlier, he brought one back for a touchdown, 61 yards.
00:35:40A turnover, and the Dolphins will have it
00:35:43and operate from their own 41-yard line.
00:35:45Brogan, looking straight downfield,
00:35:47does not see Judson coming back in.
00:35:49Judson jammed the receiver.
00:35:51Normally, Judson will go on downfield with him.
00:35:54This time, he didn't look to the outside,
00:35:56did not see Judson coming back in,
00:35:58and that was an interception
00:35:59that Brogan never thought would occur.
00:36:01Well, he had the three wide receivers in there,
00:36:03ended up throwing to the tight end, Derrick Ramsey.
00:36:08Woody Bennett and Lorenzo Hampton
00:36:10are now in the backfield.
00:36:12That's Bennett coming in motion to give to Hampton.
00:36:15Hampton out to the 42-yard line.
00:36:20There's Judson along the sideline,
00:36:23now in his fourth season, number eight draft choice,
00:36:26back in 81.
00:36:27He's been the top defensive back,
00:36:29I think, the last two years for the Dolphins.
00:36:31I mean, if you wanted to grade him out,
00:36:33I think that's the way it would show up.
00:36:35He has really come into his own the last couple of years
00:36:38with the injuries to Don McNeil on the other side.
00:36:40He has really emerged as their top corner,
00:36:44and he's playing very well.
00:36:46Twelve minutes left to play in the first half.
00:36:48Nathan and Hampton are now in the backfield.
00:36:51Marino over the middle.
00:36:53It's complete at the 45, the tight end.
00:36:56Dan Johnson, number 87, has the first down.
00:37:00Roland James, 38, and Marion, 31.
00:37:03The safeties converge to make the tackle.
00:37:06Marino limping after a 16-yard gainer to Dan Johnson.
00:37:1187, Dan Johnson gets inside of Tippett.
00:37:14That means it's a zone coverage when nobody covers him.
00:37:17Gets behind the linebackers.
00:37:19Let's take a look at Marino and see.
00:37:21Yeah, he gets rolled into there by maybe Blackman
00:37:24at the bottom of the screen,
00:37:26but maybe he got kicked in the shin or something.
00:37:29Miami leads 7-0,
00:37:31down at the Patriot 42-yard line.
00:37:33Jensen goes in motion.
00:37:35The give is to Hampton,
00:37:37and Hampton can't get much this time.
00:37:39Barely back to the line of scrimmage.
00:37:42Roland James, the former Tennessee All-American, number 38,
00:37:45the strong safety led the way.
00:37:49A win today would be the first time in Patriot history
00:37:53that they have won their first four games
00:37:55against the AFC East.
00:37:57They've beaten the Bills twice and the Jets.
00:37:59Let's remind you of this telecast
00:38:01presented by authority of the NFL
00:38:03intended for the private use of our audience.
00:38:05Any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
00:38:07without the express written consent of the Patriots and the NFL
00:38:10is prohibited.
00:38:12With Bob Greasy, Jay Randolph here at Foxborough.
00:38:17Marino, again, it's the tight end that makes the catch.
00:38:21Bruce Hardy this time,
00:38:23and Roland James, number 38,
00:38:25on the tackle at the 40-yard line.
00:38:27They didn't get much there, a pickup of about three
00:38:29as Marino had to release quickly to the tight end.
00:38:34Marino came into today's game
00:38:36with 180 completions out of 301 tries.
00:38:40Number one draft choice in 83.
00:38:43Walked out of camp,
00:38:45most troubled preseason training camp
00:38:48in the history of Don Shul and his Dolphins.
00:38:54Third down and eight.
00:39:00And intended for Mark Clayton.
00:39:04Clayton was in a battle over there
00:39:06with Rodney Swain, the extra defensive back,
00:39:11and never was able to break out in a position
00:39:14to make any kind of a catch
00:39:16as they talk it over as they come off.
00:39:18It was good, tight coverage, man-to-man coverage,
00:39:20but the key was the offense
00:39:22didn't have very much time to throw.
00:39:24Marino did not get sacked.
00:39:26If he would have waited any longer, he would have,
00:39:28but he threw the ball when the time was up
00:39:31and obviously had to throw it before he wanted to.
00:39:34Reggie Roby's first punt was a 28-yarder,
00:39:37but he put it inside the 20.
00:39:39Irving Fryer, who of course caught what he thought
00:39:42was a touchdown pass a little while ago, is back.
00:39:45Penalty marker down.
00:39:47Ball goes into the end zone.
00:39:49We've got flags all over the place.
00:39:51We've got an offside on New England,
00:39:53and that will move the ball five yards closer,
00:39:56and maybe Don Shula will opt to try a field goal.
00:40:01Offside is the indication.
00:40:03Referee Fred Wyant.
00:40:05We have 941 left to play in the first half,
00:40:07and the Dolphins are leading 7-0
00:40:09as Davenport scored in the first quarter
00:40:11from four yards out.
00:40:14Ray Berry, 53 years old,
00:40:16born in Corpus Christi, Texas.
00:40:20Resumed his 24 years playing
00:40:23and coaching career here last year.
00:40:25Offside.
00:40:27Declined.
00:40:29First push foul.
00:40:31Call won against Don Blackman, the linebacker.
00:40:35Now...
00:40:38said declined, didn't he?
00:40:39Yeah, I don't know.
00:40:40Dwight Stevenson is going over there.
00:40:42I don't think he wants to decline it.
00:40:45I can't imagine why.
00:40:51Dwight Stevenson, the offensive captain,
00:40:54hurrying over there and straightening him out.
00:40:56They want to accept the penalty.
00:40:58Stevenson, the brilliant center of the Dolphins.
00:41:01Yes, Bear Bryant put it best.
00:41:03He said, he's the best that ever played for me.
00:41:05It's quite an endorsement, isn't it?
00:41:07At the 35-yard line now,
00:41:10it is fourth down and a long two.
00:41:13The Dolphins are going to go for it, Jay.
00:41:16They're on the 35-yard line.
00:41:19I guess it must be out of Farod Ravez's range,
00:41:22and if they make it, that'll be a big penalty.
00:41:28Marino steps in behind his center.
00:41:36A throw over the middle,
00:41:37and it is a first down at the 30-yard line
00:41:41to Joe Rose, the veteran tight end from California.
00:41:45Steve Nelson, 57, on the tackle.
00:41:48Joe Rose, right there, jam at the line of scrimmage.
00:41:52Now, the key is he gets inside.
00:41:54Nelson, 57, is supposed to have the inside coverage on him.
00:41:58He does, but it's just enough to make three or four yards
00:42:01and the first down.
00:42:05Marino gets rid of the ball as he's drifting back and away.
00:42:08You know, Jay, one of the reasons they may not have tried
00:42:11that field goal is because Ravez has had
00:42:13a hamstring problem all week.
00:42:15Yeah, he's had a little trouble,
00:42:16and it might have been a little too far for him to try.
00:42:19Pass, and out to Clayton.
00:42:21Clayton gets away.
00:42:23Penalty marker down, and Clayton is down for a loss
00:42:27back at the 37-yard line.
00:42:29Julius Adams, 85, and Roland James, 38, brought him down.
00:42:34The thing that hurt was the way that pass was thrown.
00:42:37It was low. He had to go down and get it.
00:42:39Didn't have any chance to go to the far side.
00:42:43Holding against Miami.
00:42:478.46 to play in the first half.
00:42:49The Dolphins are leading 7-0.
00:42:54Hody, number 57, declined second down.
00:43:00Stephenson, the center, caught for the infraction.
00:43:05And Washington out to a 17-3 advantage
00:43:08as Theismann has just scored from 11 yards out over Atlanta.
00:43:11Tampa Bay now leads the Giants 10-3.
00:43:14Deberg to Jimmy Giles for a touchdown.
00:43:17Norwood's 43-yard field goal puts Buffalo up 10-0.
00:43:23That's Davenport.
00:43:25Davenport stopped at the 35-yard line.
00:43:30Davenport started the day with a 4.3 average,
00:43:33and we've got a little tussle.
00:43:39Tip it in there.
00:43:42Lester Williams, number 72.
00:43:48Take a look at the end of this play
00:43:50and see where it all started, Bob.
00:43:5372 is Lester Williams.
00:43:57Dwight Stephenson must have...
00:44:00Dwight went after him for some reason or other,
00:44:02and Lester must have done something a little bit earlier.
00:44:07Folks in the Miami area, of course,
00:44:09you're familiar with Lester, who played at Miami.
00:44:11Number one draft choice at 82.
00:44:16Third down and 15.
00:44:23Pass is complete, but there's a penalty marker down.
00:44:27Pass went to the 16-yard line,
00:44:30to Mark Clayton, Raymond Claiborne, 26,
00:44:34on the tackle, 20 yards if it stands.
00:44:37Let's see.
00:44:40Holding against the Patriots.
00:44:44And the play will go.
00:44:45What you're seeing, Jay, is the Patriots defense
00:44:48is playing aggressive man-to-man coverage on third down
00:44:52in their nickel situations,
00:44:53and in covering them, they're holding them,
00:44:56coming off the line of scrimmage.
00:44:57Holding, number 42,
00:45:00decline, first down.
00:45:02Call goes against Ronnie Lippitt.
00:45:04Ronnie Lippitt.
00:45:09Watch the top of your screen.
00:45:10That's Joe Rose and Ronnie Lippitt, 42.
00:45:14Must have felt he was holding him, but I don't know, Jay.
00:45:17Looked to me like he had his hands on him, jamming him,
00:45:19but whether or not he was actually holding him
00:45:21is hard to see.
00:45:22Jim Jensen back into the game, number 11 for Miami.
00:45:26First and 10 at the 15-yard line.
00:45:29Marino throws an out batter.
00:45:31Complete.
00:45:32That's Bruce Hardy, the big tight end,
00:45:35and Hardy run out of bounds
00:45:37by Blackman, the linebacker, 55.
00:45:40Boy, did he take a shot for Blackman.
00:45:42He did.
00:45:43Excuse me, Jay.
00:45:44He got to the 12-yard line.
00:45:45Talking about defenses in this game,
00:45:48the Patriots rank fifth,
00:45:50sixth against the rush, seventh against the pass.
00:45:53The Dolphins are 24th in defense in the NFL.
00:45:5724th against the rush and 27th against the pass.
00:46:00Here is second down.
00:46:07Davenport.
00:46:08Davenport gets to the 8-yard line
00:46:11before he's offended by Ronnie Lippitt, number 42.
00:46:14Pick up a four on the play.
00:46:16Seven minutes left to play.
00:46:18First half, Miami leading 7-0
00:46:21and knocking on the door once more.
00:46:24As Claude Brevet is warming up on the sideline,
00:46:27and, Jay, you're giving the statistics
00:46:29offensively and defensively.
00:46:30One of the more interesting ones, I think,
00:46:32coming up to a third-down situation.
00:46:34Miami is number one in the entire league
00:46:36in converting third-down conversions,
00:46:38and, of course, the Patriots are number one
00:46:41defensively in stopping it,
00:46:42so a great matchup right here.
00:46:44And the Dolphins are 2-for-5
00:46:47on third-down conversions today.
00:46:50Marino throws.
00:46:52Marino throws incomplete.
00:46:55The pass was intended at the 3-yard line
00:46:58for Tommy Vigarito, number 32.
00:47:01Pass a little bit underthrown.
00:47:03Don Blackman, the linebacker on the right side,
00:47:06isolated out there with him.
00:47:09Blackman had a great game last week against the Patriots.
00:47:12He had a safety, an interception, and a sack
00:47:15to go along with five tackles,
00:47:17and that after being out two weeks with an injury,
00:47:20so Blackman playing very well for the New England Patriots.
00:47:25Reves will attempt this field goal from the 16,
00:47:30a 26-yarder with Don Strach to hold.
00:47:33It's on the way, and it is good.
00:47:366.27 left to go in the first half.
00:47:40The Dolphins have increased their lead.
00:47:43They're up over New England 10-0.
00:47:47Watching is believing.
00:47:50Look into the mirror and watch Ford escorts swept away
00:47:53by the benefits of Reno.
00:47:56With Bob Greasy, Jay Randolph here at Foxboro
00:48:00as Baud Reves is set to kick off
00:48:03with Miami up 10-0 here.
00:48:06Stephan Starring is the deep man for the New England Patriots.
00:48:12Starring has been averaging 23.3 per kick return.
00:48:27Starring at the 13, at the 20, 25, and to the 30-yard line.
00:48:43Today's game is brought to you by
00:48:45Reno, European technology built in America.
00:48:48Make Reno the one to watch.
00:48:50By the astonishingly simple new Sony Handycam.
00:48:53All the excitement of video movies now in the palm of your hand.
00:48:56And by the U.S. Armed Forces.
00:48:58It's a great place to start.
00:49:02First down and over the middle.
00:49:04The pass is intercepted.
00:49:06Coming away with it is Mark Brown, number 51,
00:49:10right inside linebacker.
00:49:12A real find for the Dolphins out of Purdue.
00:49:15Pass was intended for James.
00:49:17It bounced off his hands.
00:49:20The interception at the 41.
00:49:22Return of six yards.
00:49:24Good protection and a nice lane for him to see.
00:49:26Just deflected off of the hands of the receiver.
00:49:29That was James, 32.
00:49:31And right into the hands of Brown.
00:49:34Jay, when the weather is a little bit cool
00:49:38the ball gets a little bit harder too.
00:49:40And that's a tough ball to catch when it's up that high.
00:49:42Dolphins had seven interceptions coming into today's game.
00:49:45They now have nine.
00:49:48And a big opportunity for Miami to increase their lead.
00:49:52Marino has time.
00:49:54Going long for Clayton.
00:50:00Raymond Claiborne was back there to help bat it away.
00:50:04This is an interesting battle between Clayton and Claiborne.
00:50:08They've been exchanging insults, quotes in the paper all week
00:50:13about he can't cover me, I can beat him.
00:50:16Well, Claiborne gets the best of this.
00:50:18The ball is a little bit under thrown,
00:50:20but he had the back of the end zone to help him.
00:50:22But good play by Claiborne.
00:50:27Cleveland leading Pittsburgh six to nothing there in the second quarter.
00:50:32Minnesota has the lead over Detroit now.
00:50:35Here it's 10-0 Miami.
00:50:38The give going to Hampton.
00:50:40Hampton's to the 32-yard line,
00:50:42wrapped up there by Guerin Barris after a pickup of four.
00:50:45Barris, number 60, had help from Blackman, 55.
00:50:48I mentioned Raymond Claiborne a minute ago.
00:50:51His 114th consecutive start today.
00:50:55All four running backs averaging no less than four yards.
00:50:59Averaging no less than four yards per carry for the Dolphins.
00:51:03That's an interesting stat there too, Jay,
00:51:05because a lot of people say Miami can't run the football.
00:51:08Well, when they have run it, they've run it well.
00:51:10But when you've got a Marino and you're so successful throwing the football,
00:51:14you kind of want to throw it more than you want to run it.
00:51:18Third down and seven at the 32-yard line.
00:51:22Marino on the run.
00:51:25And down he goes.
00:51:28Back at the 37-yard line, it was Kenneth Sims.
00:51:32Sims now the man they call the silent one,
00:51:36the former Lombardi Trophy winner from Texas
00:51:39who has been playing extremely well over recent weeks.
00:51:42He sure has, and you saw him trying to say a few things to Marino,
00:51:45and Marino says, I don't want to have any part of that.
00:51:48I don't think Sims was talking to anybody these days.
00:51:51He's not talking to the press.
00:51:52I guess he talked to the players.
00:51:54But when Marino was outside the pocket and he didn't find anything downfield,
00:51:58you knew there was good coverage in the second period for the Patriots.
00:52:01That's the first sack on Marino.
00:52:03Here's Reggie Roby angling to the far sideline.
00:52:06Penalty. No.
00:52:09Oh, let's see. It goes into the end zone.
00:52:11I thought for a moment a penalty marker had been thrown,
00:52:13but it was a hat by one of the officials to try and mark it.
00:52:17But that ball bounded back.
00:52:20So, L was down there, number 45 for Miami, 38-yard punt.
00:52:23Look at it here.
00:52:27So, it'll come out to the 20-yard line more in a moment.
00:52:33We're not a company, but we recognize potential.
00:52:36We develop it. We use it.
00:52:38We'll make sure that it's not just missing a golden opportunity after the turnover.
00:52:42How do you like this weather up here today?
00:52:44I love this weather.
00:52:45I'd like to take some of this back to Miami with me.
00:52:48Isn't it true that you once wore pantyhose up here on a cold afternoon?
00:52:52I've got to admit to that.
00:52:55First down for the Patriots, and the handoff going to Craig James.
00:53:00James is out to the 26-yard line, and Hugh Green, 55.
00:53:04Mike Charles, 71, stalled him at that point.
00:53:07As we take a look at this score, the four times the Patriots have had the ball,
00:53:11the first two times they punted, the last two were intercepted,
00:53:14and the Dolphins defensively were last in the league in takeaways,
00:53:18so they have to be happy, the Dolphins anyway, about those two turnovers.
00:53:22George Rogers just scored a touchdown in that Washington onslaught of Atlanta.
00:53:29Second down and three.
00:53:34Pitch to Craig James, cuts it back,
00:53:38and is short of the first down as Jackie Shipp, the inside linebacker, number 50,
00:53:45number one draft choice out of Oklahoma, played it very well.
00:53:48James, as I mentioned, really likes the football.
00:53:51One of the things we may look for later on is him to throw a pass
00:53:55because he has thrown two, completed two, both for touchdowns this season.
00:53:59Been bad no matter who's keeping the stats.
00:54:01That's right.
00:54:03We have 3.55 left to play.
00:54:08First half.
00:54:12Third down and one.
00:54:15Withers and Tutupu are in the backfield.
00:54:17That's Tutupu, and he's got the first down.
00:54:20That's Mark Brown, 51 on the tackle, a pickup of about seven.
00:54:26Take a look at the left side of that line against 55 Green and Blackwood.
00:54:35Good blocking up front.
00:54:37Withers and Tutupu come in on short yardage situations.
00:54:41Raymond Berry gets those two big backs.
00:54:43Good blocking, tough runners in on short yardage.
00:54:46Friar and Morgan are both set to the right side at the bottom of the screen.
00:54:51Over the middle, incomplete for Tony Collins, and the pass a little high.
00:54:57That one went through Collins' hands just the way the one with James did
00:55:02a few moments ago that was intercepted.
00:55:05It is misting here.
00:55:07Grogan having a tough start here today on a very cool, misty afternoon.
00:55:12Stats aren't that good, but Grogan has always been a quarterback
00:55:15that didn't care about his stats.
00:55:17He'll throw some big plays, try long passes,
00:55:20and whether he's completing a high percentage or not,
00:55:23he can still come back and make the big play.
00:55:25One of the things they say about him these days
00:55:27is he has a better touch than he used to have.
00:55:30Now in his 11th season, on second down, he's got a man,
00:55:34and it is tapped away at the last minute by number 47, Glenn Blackwood.
00:55:39Blackwood making a fine play in front of the tight end, Lynn Dawson.
00:55:44Blackwood, a very intelligent performer out of Texas.
00:55:47He held out, of course, during preseason drills.
00:55:52He was one of the holdouts, Glenn.
00:55:54Bob Brzezinski also held out.
00:55:56That was, I think, part of their problem, Jay.
00:55:58They never had the entire defensive unit together.
00:56:00They've had injuries with Baumar, Charles Bowser,
00:56:03and McNeil has been hurt, and then the new additions,
00:56:05Jackie Shipp playing this year for the first time, and Hugh Green.
00:56:09All that transition and all those new personalities,
00:56:12all that transition and all those new personnel
00:56:14has to have an effect on your continuity on defense.
00:56:17Miami in to prevent defense, and Grogan leads them out of the shotgun.
00:56:22Grogan throwing, got his man, first down.
00:56:26The pass is complete to Irving Fryer, 18 yards on the play.
00:56:32Paul Langford, 44, made the tackle.
00:56:36Here's Fryer right here, and Langford is covering him.
00:56:39He's just going to go straight down and break to the outside,
00:56:42and the outside receiver will just clear it out.
00:56:45You'll see nobody else is in the area
00:56:47because it's man-to-man coverage, nobody else around.
00:56:50Pushes off a little bit, breaks to the outside,
00:56:52and the ball is right on target.
00:56:55Fryer's second catch of the day.
00:56:57The first one didn't count as it was called back.
00:56:5918 yards for him.
00:57:032.50 to play in the first half.
00:57:06Play action by Grogan.
00:57:08And incomplete.
00:57:12Craig James had moved out of the backfield,
00:57:15obviously not the primary receiver,
00:57:17and the pass underthrown for James.
00:57:20Clock stopped with 2.49 left to go in this first half.
00:57:24As you look at Raymond Berry,
00:57:26he's the ninth head coach of the Patriots,
00:57:29a Hall of Famer, a tireless worker, and a technician,
00:57:32both as a player and as a coach.
00:57:39Ball at the 48-yard line of Miami.
00:57:43Second and ten.
00:57:50And off going to Collins
00:57:52as they gave it to him out of that I formation,
00:57:56and doing an excellent job
00:57:58was Kim Boekemper, number 58,
00:58:00a loss of about a yard on the play.
00:58:03Hugh Green wears a protection in front on his mask.
00:58:07It's a plastic impact-resistant,
00:58:10shatterproof type of a shield
00:58:12so that he had a problem with an eye a few games back,
00:58:16and he's worn that to protect the eyes.
00:58:19Needs a windshield wiper down there today.
00:58:21Today he does.
00:58:22Warren Moon to Drew Hill,
00:58:24and Houston leads Kansas City.
00:58:2610-0 here.
00:58:28Third down and 11 for the Patriots.
00:58:31Over the middle.
00:58:33Firing Friar high into the air to make the catch.
00:58:37Friar made it in front of Paul Lankford.
00:58:4124-yard pickup, and Brogan and Friar connect again.
00:58:45Here's Friar.
00:58:46He's going to go straight down the field
00:58:48and break to the inside,
00:58:49and this receiver will clear the safety out of the way for him.
00:58:53As you'll see, comes to the inside.
00:58:59Good throw by Brogan.
00:59:01The Patriots are on the move.
00:59:10Look what just popped up.
00:59:12The new Sony Handycam.
00:59:14This afternoon, the second half of our doubleheader.
00:59:16Most of you see that Western shootout.
00:59:18Marcus Allen and the Raiders, they battle the Seahawks.
00:59:22Brogan now is 6 out of 14 for 70 yards.
00:59:26First and 10 at the 24-yard line.
00:59:29Tony Collins.
00:59:31Collins gets to the 21-yard line.
00:59:33Pickup of three.
00:59:34Doug Betters, number 75, on the tackle.
00:59:37We're isolated again on Hugh Green, big number 55.
00:59:42Blocking on Green is James 32 as he throws James out of the way,
00:59:47but the block was sufficient enough to allow the runner to get through the hole.
00:59:52Hugh Green is going to be an impact player on that defense, Jay.
00:59:55There's no question, as soon as he learns the entire defense,
00:59:58he's going to be as devastating there as he was at Tampa.
01:00:02Second down and about six, a minute and 23 to go in this first half.
01:00:07Brogan using play action, lots of time, throws over the middle.
01:00:11Incomplete.
01:00:12He was trying to go to Irving Fryer again.
01:00:16Fryer cutting back over the middle,
01:00:18but Brown, the free safety 43, had the coverage.
01:00:21Clock stopped with a minute and 15 to go.
01:00:24Both clubs have three timeouts remaining.
01:00:27Here's Bud Brown right here.
01:00:28He's just going to drop straight back,
01:00:30and the receiver is going to come down and break to the inside.
01:00:33Brogan is hoping that the play action will fool Bud Brown.
01:00:37Brown blocks back straight up and then sees it coming all the way
01:00:41and then goes for the interception, just doesn't come up with the football.
01:00:45Irving Fryer, Stephan Starring, and Stanley Morgan are all in the lineup now
01:00:49as the Patriots are spread out all over the field.
01:00:52New England, four out of seven on third down conversions, third and seven.
01:00:59Brogan throwing and overthrowing Stanley Morgan.
01:01:05Looked like Morgan might have had a step on the play,
01:01:10but Brogan overthrowing.
01:01:12Judson and Brown had the coverage.
01:01:15Tony Franklin, a seven-year man from Texas A&M.
01:01:21Tony Eason, who has been injured, of course,
01:01:24but can do the holding, will do the holding.
01:01:27Franklin had a 50-yarder last Sunday against the wind.
01:01:31He is 11 of 14 in the field goal kicking department,
01:01:3433 of 42 field goals as a Patriot.
01:01:37This is a 38-yarder.
01:01:42Franklin gets it on the way, plenty of foot.
01:01:44It's good, and he continues to prove he's one of the very best in the business.
01:01:50107 to play.
01:01:54Watching is believing.
01:01:56Watch Toyota Corolla reshaped by the benefits of Renault.
01:01:59Watch Renault Alliance's larger truck.
01:02:02Al Sutton, Lanny Watkins, Hale Irwin, they'll all be competing.
01:02:07That'll be a great event.
01:02:09Kapalua on Maui.
01:02:13Hampton is now the middleman for Miami,
01:02:16is coming up to take it at the 10, at the 15, the 20.
01:02:20Trying to get outside and does and stops the clock
01:02:23as he stepped out of bounds at the 26-yard line.
01:02:28We've got one minute and one second remaining to be played in this first half.
01:02:33Give you a look at all of these scores very quickly.
01:02:35Cleveland over Pittsburgh.
01:02:36Washington really doing it to Atlanta.
01:02:38Green Bay leads Chicago.
01:02:40Minnesota has the lead over Detroit.
01:02:42Tampa Bay leading the Giants.
01:02:44Buffalo.
01:02:46There's that Houston score now, 6-0 over Kansas City.
01:02:50And 6-3 Minnesota over Detroit.
01:02:55Tampa Bay over the Giants.
01:03:00And, of course, coming up at halftime,
01:03:02Rob Costas, Ahmad Rashad, and Pete Axnelton, NFL 85.
01:03:06The handoff goes to Lorenzo Hampton.
01:03:09He's up a four on the play as he is stalled by Lester Williams, number 72.
01:03:14These Patriot linebackers have been playing very, very well.
01:03:17Their defense is now ranked fifth against the Rush.
01:03:21Last week they were ninth.
01:03:22The timeout is called.
01:03:2352 seconds remaining to be played in the first half.
01:03:27More action from Foxborough in a moment.
01:03:34This bus for all that you do.
01:03:37Somehow you always come through.
01:03:41The offense, Bob, on their last seven first plays from scrimmage, first down plays.
01:03:48They now have zero yards on those seven first down opportunities.
01:03:53They're having trouble running the ball on first down.
01:03:56That's not surprising, again, with that mix-max of offensive linemen,
01:04:00right tackle moving to the left, a new man in there.
01:04:03It's very tough to run with new people at different positions in the offensive line.
01:04:07Hardy and Johnson, both tight ends, are in there now for Marino on second down.
01:04:14Throws it out to the far sideline, and out of bounds is Durial Harris.
01:04:21Picked up six.
01:04:22Ronnie Lippitt was over there.
01:04:26NFL 85 at halftime with all the scores.
01:04:31Some interesting messages, I'm sure.
01:04:34Probably something from Ahmad and Axe that you'll enjoy checking out.
01:04:3946 seconds remaining to be played in this first half.
01:04:45The Dolphins are leading at 10-3.
01:04:52Dolphins with two timeouts remaining.
01:04:54The Patriots with three.
01:04:55And it is third down and one.
01:05:01Timeout.
01:05:04Marino went to the line of scrimmage, and there was something there he didn't like.
01:05:09Well, he didn't like the clock at the end of the field.
01:05:11The 30-second clock was down to three or four seconds,
01:05:14and he knew he didn't have time to get the playoff, so he did the best thing.
01:05:18Rather than hurry up and have an offside, possibly, or a misplay, just call timeout.
01:05:26A sellout here this afternoon as the folks have come from all over New England.
01:05:31Hope you're enjoying the action wherever you are.
01:05:36See this big crowd sitting in the mist here in Foxboro.
01:05:43Looks like winter is just about to set in here as we look at Raymond Berry.
01:05:48Played for his daddy at Paris, Texas, and then at SMU.
01:05:53When he retired in 1967, he was the NFL's all-time pass receiver.
01:05:59A man who had only one fumble in his entire career.
01:06:02He believes in that silly putty, doesn't he?
01:06:04Strengthen those hands with that silly putty.
01:06:06Exactly, and he's had a pretty good year this year.
01:06:10They're 5-3.
01:06:12He made some mistakes early on with some of his running backs.
01:06:15He tried to change them around a little bit, play four of them instead of the two,
01:06:18and he says, I didn't like it.
01:06:19So he says, I'm changing it the following week, and he admitted he had made a mistake.
01:06:23The other thing he was telling me earlier in the week was the quarterback position,
01:06:26judging when to play Easton and when to play Grogan,
01:06:30early on was a tough decision for him.
01:06:32He'd never been through it before, but Grogan's his quarterback now.
01:06:36Third down and one.
01:06:39Well throws, and it is complete for the first down to Tony Nathan.
01:06:44Nathan now in his seventh season out of Alabama.
01:06:47His 42nd catch of the year, and Claiborne over there to knock him out of bounds,
01:06:52number 26, and the clock showing 41 seconds left to go in this first half.
01:06:57There's one man right there, Tony Nathan,
01:06:59who has really picked up the slack for the absence of Mark Duper.
01:07:02Duper, the all-pro receiver last year for the Dolphins
01:07:05who's been out with a cracked tibia and pulled a hamstring tendon this past week.
01:07:11But Tony Nathan has caught more passes and has really picked up the slack.
01:07:20Marino from the shotgun, pressured, he gets it away.
01:07:24It's intercepted.
01:07:25Intercepted in the 35-yard line by Rod McSwain.
01:07:31McSwain, the nickelback from Clemson.
01:07:34He has great speed.
01:07:36Pass intended for Clayton.
01:07:39Playing man-to-man on Clayton, and Marino sees single coverage.
01:07:43He's done this a lot, just throws it up, and hopefully Clayton will go out and make the play.
01:07:48That time, Clayton went to the outside as we see a good close-up matchup.
01:07:52Now McSwain plays to the outside and then drifts to the inside.
01:07:56Poorly thrown ball, but there are only 23 seconds left or 35 seconds,
01:08:00so I'm sure Marino was thinking, if my man doesn't knock it down,
01:08:03we're still going to go in halftime with a lead.
01:08:06They got McSwain from Atlanta.
01:08:09He was the number three choice for them.
01:08:11They got him for an eight, a real fine.
01:08:15Now let's see what the Patriots can do.
01:08:18Drogan trying to get out of there, now loses the football,
01:08:22and they get it back at the 27-yard line.
01:08:26It looked like Craig James fell on it.
01:08:31They have 25 seconds remaining to be played in this first half.
01:08:39Timeout called.
01:08:46New England with 13 fumbles lost.
01:08:51Tied with St. Louis in that rather unenviable category coming into today's game.
01:08:56Those two teams lead the National Football League in most fumbles lost,
01:09:00but this is not an ideal day for offensive football.
01:09:04It's cold and it's wet, and the more mists you get,
01:09:07the wetter the players are going to become and the colder they're going to get,
01:09:11and it's very tough holding on to the football.
01:09:13You can see Raymond Berry, he's not worried about how he looks.
01:09:17He just wants to stay warm, and I don't blame him.
01:09:22They're calling that a sack of the second of the day for Miami.
01:09:2821 seconds left to go in this first half.
01:09:30There's your former head man.
01:09:33Looks pretty good for a fellow 55 years old who's been through a very rugged season already.
01:09:39It's the most disruptive camp he's ever had, and there's been a lot of problems,
01:09:43but talking to him earlier in the week, they're 5-3,
01:09:48and they play the next four games against AFC East competition,
01:09:53and it's right there in front of them.
01:09:55They have the Jets at home next week, and then if they can go on and win the following two,
01:10:00I think one's Buffalo and in Indianapolis,
01:10:03so it hasn't been all gravy and it hasn't been the way he would like to have had it,
01:10:07but the challenge is in front of them,
01:10:10and if there's anybody that can get his team motivated with all the injuries they've had,
01:10:13it's Don Shula.
01:10:14Talked about that at the top of the show.
01:10:16Shula coached Ray Berry, 1963 through 67.
01:10:21Friar goes in motion.
01:10:23Grogan over the middle, and it is caught, and out of bounds goes Irving Friar.
01:10:30Friar went high into the air to get it, a pickup of 12 on the play.
01:10:34Moyer, the linebacker, was out there with him.
01:10:38You see Friar coming in motion.
01:10:40Now he's just going to go across the field.
01:10:42He's letting the other receivers go deep.
01:10:45This is a safe pass because it's a shorter pass to Friar.
01:10:48Now if he's got some speed or if there's an opening up the field,
01:10:51maybe he can break it for 30 or 40 yards.
01:10:53I don't anticipate them taking any big chances in the backfield.
01:10:57Patriots have two timeouts remaining, 15 seconds left to go in this first half.
01:11:07And it is Stephan Starring, and Starring couldn't get out of bounds.
01:11:11The clock is running.
01:11:13Six seconds left.
01:11:14They picked up eight yards in the first down,
01:11:17and they call a timeout, one timeout left for the Patriots,
01:11:21and six seconds with which to operate before the half comes to a close.
01:11:28Grogan, who played at Kansas State, a fifth-round draft choice in 75,
01:11:35came into today's game with 141 touchdowns and 163 interceptions.
01:11:42Two timeouts remaining as Grogan talks things over along the sidelines.
01:11:46Three games ago against Buffalo, when Tony Easton,
01:11:50who was there in the red jacket, by the way, with the headset on,
01:11:53was injured and Grogan had to come out and play,
01:11:56Grogan came out and he fumbled the first nap.
01:11:58And talking with him, he said,
01:12:00I think my knees were shaking worse than they ever shook in my life
01:12:03any time I've ever played professional football.
01:12:05And the reason was he wasn't prepared to play.
01:12:08And this is a very tough thing for a backup to do, Jay,
01:12:11and that is to prepare like you're going to play,
01:12:13and then for 18 games in a row, which he just sat on the bench,
01:12:17and he didn't get in.
01:12:18So it's very tough.
01:12:19And this is what you have to look on the other sideline and see Don Strock,
01:12:22he has to do this every week.
01:12:24And it's very tough to do, especially for quarterbacks.
01:12:27They don't get in that much.
01:12:29Grogan has had a very checkered career here.
01:12:31He's been the toast of the town one day
01:12:33and down right at the bottom of the list the next day.
01:12:37And he's been very helpful with Tony Easton in that regard.
01:12:40First down with six seconds left in the first half.
01:12:47Grogan goes long to the far sideline, and it is intercepted.
01:12:53Intercepted by the Dolphins over there.
01:12:56Coming away with it, Lyle Blackwood, number 42.
01:13:02We come to halftime, Miami 10, New England 3,
01:13:06and let's take a look at that last play.
01:13:08It looked like a long ball to left field.
01:13:11Well, what you see, the three receivers on that side,
01:13:14the two receivers should go beyond the one that's going to play the ball.
01:13:17Now, the one that's going to play the ball should try and tip it toward the goal line.
01:13:21As you see there, Fryer and Morgan, yes.
01:13:25And Starring is the one that goes up, but the other two receivers are down further,
01:13:29like to try and tip it toward the goal line.
01:13:31In the turnover department, New England had three turnovers in this first half,
01:13:37and Miami had one.
01:13:40Miami got their touchdown from Davenport from four yards out,
01:13:45but it seems to me, Bob,
01:13:46the key play in that seventh-play 79-yard drive was this pass right here.
01:13:52Early on, Marino going back.
01:13:55He's going to throw it to Clayton,
01:13:56and this is something that the Dolphin offense has not been able to do.
01:14:00They've been taking this away.
01:14:01New England has come out and is playing their style of defense.
01:14:04They're challenging them man-to-man coverage,
01:14:06and they're letting them get behind them,
01:14:08so maybe we'll see a little bit more of Clayton beyond the second half.
01:14:12All right, and NFL 85 halftime activities will continue in just a moment.
01:14:18We'll be right back after these messages from your local station.
01:14:23Tonight, the 24th mission, where the lives of ten men rest in the power of one.
01:14:30Now, the impossible is about to happen.
