00:00We're going to go out to a spot that makes us feel nice where there's not many people and there's not many cars and there's more, you know, some of the crumbs of native landscape that have been left.
00:11And amongst these crumbs we shall find maybe some nice plants to bring back here.
00:16Yeah, that's where we go and get the ideas.
00:18We're hitting up two locations to see different examples of microsites Charlie plans to restore in his yard.
00:23We're here at Pinecrest Gardens, which is a little crumb of habitat.
00:27Charlie's property is just down Snapper Creek from here. Can you believe this is what it looked like before it was suburbanized?
00:34Little turtle you see him down there?
00:36Look, there's two. They got friends. If I could be anything, I would be a little turtle in a pen.
00:41We're here looking for the cypress trees that are going to show us what Charlie's going to plant along the banks of the canal.
00:48And they're going to hold the banks together. They're going to prevent erosion and create that water site ecosystem.
00:54See, they put these in so you can't pull, like, a personal injury claim. You can't fall over, you know?
01:00I mean, the rocks themselves look like they offer an opportunity for a personal injury.
01:04Look at all the cypress knees. You see that?
01:06Yeah.
01:07These wooden protrusions sticking out the ground right here, those are called cypress knees,
01:10and they're protrusions from the roots of this tree, the bald cypress.
01:14The old thinking was that they used to help the roots acquire oxygen, but I don't think that's what's going on.
01:18They're probably helping give structural support to the root system to prevent the tree from blowing over.
01:23So, I mean, you can see why the root structure looks like that. It's got that fluted base.
01:27Those trunk buttresses, those are providing structural support, much like a beautiful Gothic cathedral.
01:32Like Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrows Basilica over on Garfield Boulevard.
01:37Right, exactly. All right. This has been nice, but I want to go see some habitat.
01:41Let's go. Let's go somewhere a little more wild, a little less cultivated.
01:45That's super planted.
