00:00:05Hi, everybody.

00:00:05Marv Albert along with Bob Greasy.

00:00:07The Jets at 5-1, one of the surprises in the early going of the NFL

00:00:11coming off the victory over Miami.

00:00:13And the focus has been on their aggressive defensive play

00:00:16orchestrated by defensive coordinator Bud Carson.

00:00:20Well, he has sold the Jet defenders on this defense.

00:00:23They lead the National Football League in the fewest points allowed.

00:00:26While the Patriots at 3-3 having all kinds of problems,

00:00:29offensively, Tony Eason, the starting quarterback,

00:00:32who had been struggling, went down last week with a separated shoulder.

00:00:35And so the new man calling the signal, Steve Grogan,

00:00:38the veteran who is more of a gambler.

00:00:41Grogan came in last week against the Buffalo Bills

00:00:43and led them to the victory.

00:00:45He provided a spark, a lot of leadership,

00:00:46and I think you're going to see a lot of new ideas

00:00:49on the Patriots' offense here today.

00:00:51And today, the 50th meeting between these two AFL originals,

00:00:55a rivalry that dates back to the days of the New York Titans

00:00:58and the Boston Patriots back to the year of 1960.

00:01:03The Jets winning the toss they have elected to receive.

00:01:06Here's the kickoff from Tony Franklin,

00:01:09and we're underway at Foxborough.

00:01:11This is Kirk Springs on the return.

00:01:14Andre Tippett in on the tackle, a 19-yard return,

00:01:23and the Jets go to the offense.

00:01:26Quarterback Ken O'Brien, who has been solid,

00:01:29playing under control,

00:01:30and a running back combination of Johnny Hector and Marion Barber.

00:01:34Joe Wolfe deciding to rest Freeman McNeil,

00:01:37at least at the start,

00:01:38because he is battered coming off the Miami game.

00:01:43Saw the Jets' first down from the 23.

00:01:54And Hector stopped by Andre Tippett.

00:01:58The Jets' offensive line coming off an outstanding performance

00:02:03against Miami on Monday night.

00:02:06Jets' coaches were not pleased with this unit

00:02:08two weeks ago against Cincinnati,

00:02:10but they were firing off the ball against the Dolphins.

00:03:15Marv, the Jets started off much as they did

00:03:17Monday night's game against the Dolphins

00:03:19with four wide receivers,

00:03:20both on first and second down.

00:03:22Third down situation,

00:03:24the Jets have been very proficient

00:03:25over the past few games,

00:03:27but the Patriots, number two

00:03:29in the National Football League on third downs,

00:03:31stopping the other team,

00:03:32came up a winner that time.

00:03:33And there's Irving Friar back at his 35.

00:03:38Dave Jennings, who comes off an outstanding game

00:03:41against the Dolphins,

00:03:43back at his five.

00:03:49And a good one.

00:03:53Excellent coverage by the Jets all over Friar.

00:04:20This has been a battered offensive line.

00:04:22In fact, until recently,

00:05:09And he has certainly heard the boos

00:05:11from the crowd the last couple of weeks.

00:05:13Even when he was leaving the field last week,

00:05:16he heard it unmercifully.

00:05:17Not a very classy act by the fans

00:05:20or some of the fans here at Foxburg.

00:05:33And a first down picked up by Irving Friar.

00:05:37Friar coming off his best game as a pro.

00:05:40And the win over Buffalo last Sunday.

00:05:47Seeing Gleko set off to the side

00:05:49gets a little pressure,

00:05:51but Gaston, though, 99,

00:05:52gets some pressure inside.

00:05:54Just a little curl in the middle of the field

00:05:55in between the zone of the New York Jets.

00:05:59And they have a first down of the Jet, 42.

00:06:02James and Collins, the setbacks.

00:06:08And Brogan going deep for fire.

00:06:14Bobby Jackson on the cover.

00:06:17This is the excitement that has been lacking

00:06:20in a lot of the play calling up to this point

00:06:22as far as the Patriots have been concerned.

00:06:24Brogan calling his own plays,

00:06:26likes to go deep,

00:06:27which stretches the defense

00:06:29and opens up a lot of the short passes.

00:06:31And we have heard it

00:06:33from the early portion of the season,

00:06:34all the criticism of the New England area

00:06:36concerning the conservative play calling

00:06:39of head coach Raymond Berry.

00:06:42And he says he's not a conservative type of guy.

00:06:44When he was playing,

00:06:45he liked to be very aggressive.

00:06:47So why is he conservative as a coach?

00:06:48He admitted.

00:06:49He said, I've probably been too conservative.

00:06:51He has changed coaching staffs

00:06:52and changed offensive terminology.

00:06:54We'll get into that a little bit more.

00:06:56On second down and 10,

00:06:57and it's to the ground from Craig James.

00:06:59Yes.

00:07:01Barry Bennett on the stop.

00:07:04And the running game of New England

00:07:06that has struggled right throughout

00:07:08has changed its look last week.

00:07:11Barry goes with a combination of Collins and Tatupu.

00:07:14Now back to James,

00:07:15who is at a fullback position,

00:07:17not a good blocker,

00:07:18yet Barry feels more comfortable

00:07:20with this combination of James and Collins.

00:07:22James is really a halfback.

00:07:24He said during the week,

00:07:25he says, I looked over last week

00:07:26and saw James on the sideline,

00:07:27and I wanted them both in there.

00:07:29But you're playing with two halfbacks

00:07:31in your backfield,

00:07:33and you really need a fullback.

00:07:34I think your running game is going to go better

00:07:36if one can block and one can run.

00:07:38And obviously,

00:07:39they're still searching for some kind of identity

00:07:41offensively as the Patriots.

00:07:43And the Patriots have called for time.

00:07:49Timeout called by New England.

00:07:56The Browns lead the Raiders in the fourth quarter.

00:08:12from the problems of the last couple of weeks

00:08:15by knocking off the Redskins,

00:08:17who are struggling.

00:08:18Rams over the Kansas City Chiefs.

00:08:25And Houston doing it to Cincinnati.

00:08:28There was some talk about fourth quarter,

00:08:3144-27,

00:08:33but a lot of talk down there

00:08:35about Campbell may be in some problems.

00:08:40So he doesn't talk to the general manager very much.

00:08:42And if I were the head coach

00:08:43and weren't winning many ballgames,

00:08:45I'd be talking to as many front office people as I could.

00:08:48That goes back to an incident last year

00:08:50where they got into a disagreement

00:08:53and Herzog reportedly publicly embarrassed

00:08:57the head coach, Hugh Campbell,

00:09:00and Buffalo over Indianapolis 21 tonight.

00:09:03And incidentally, if you're ever looking

00:09:06to punish your children, Bob,

00:09:08I haven't been studying for today's game,

00:09:11watched nothing against the announcers

00:09:13or the production crew

00:09:14who handled the Buffalo-New England game

00:09:17of last week.

00:09:18But that had to be one of the worst football games

00:09:20that I've ever seen in my life.

00:09:22And if you ever want to punish the kids,

00:09:23let's give them a copy of the tape

00:09:24of last week's Buffalo-New England game.

00:09:26Well, it was here in Foxboro,

00:09:28and it was an overcast, very foggy,

00:09:30and rainy, cold day.

00:09:32Oh, is that why?

00:09:32And a lot of dropped balls.

00:09:35Yeah.

00:09:36At both ends by potential interceptors

00:09:39and potential receivers.

00:11:29Freeman McNeil was banged up against the Dolphins quite a bit on Monday night.

00:11:33And I think if you try and use McNeil all the time,

00:11:37you're going to get him banged up and hurt.

00:11:38It's a long season.

00:11:39Hector is a fine player.

00:11:41And I think it's a smart move to get him in there.

00:11:43McNeil coming off a 173-yard performance.

00:11:48And we'd like to welcome those of you who have been watching the San Diego-Minnesota game.

00:12:12There's Freeman McNeil who coming into today, leading the NFL 645 yards on the ground.

00:12:40The Patriots have had problems offensively,

00:12:43but defensively they're one of the best units in the league.

00:12:46Tippett, number 56, normally a linebacker,

00:12:50leads this team in sacks.

00:12:52As you see right there, he's the first one to get to the quarterback.

00:12:5418 and a half sacks last year for Andre Tippett.

00:12:58But clubs have been able to handle him since opening day

00:13:01when he had three against Green Bay.

00:13:02That is his first sack since the first week of the season.
