00:00A barefooted style of Tony Franklin approaches the ball to the 35-yard line.
00:04It is a short kick.
00:06At the 10-yard line, it is Young coming to the near side.
00:10Ships over his own man and is smothered at the 17, maybe the 18.
00:18So the Browns offensive unit led by the veteran Gary Danielson.
00:22The running back is Ernest Viner, Kevin Mack.
00:25The wide receiver is Weathers, Brian Brennan, back off an injury.
00:27The tight end is the wily old Ozzie Newsom.
00:30The offensive line, Paul Fair and George Lilja.
00:33The center is Mike Baff, Dan Clank, Ricky Fulton is at the right side.
00:40Out of the I-formation, the deep back is Viner.
00:46Danielson will put it up early.
00:48Player to the near side, it is Mack.
00:50He has the ball and is stopped at the 27-yard line by Andre Tiffin.
00:57I like the call, Phil.
01:00The Browns known to be a rushing team coming on at first down throwing the ball.
01:04Here you see the defensive line of the Patriots.
01:06A big, strong line.
01:07Ken Sims, Dennis Owens, and Kobe Williams.
01:10The linebackers, Andre Tiffin, Steve Nelson, Larry McGrew.
01:14Don Blackman, the core of the defense.
01:15And on the backfield, of course, Ronnie Lippitt, Ray Claiborne, Roland James, and Fred Marion.
01:19Second down and a yard for Cleveland at their own 28-yard line to give the second man through.
01:28He's got the first down across the 32-yard line.
01:35Ernest Viner smothered by Larry McGrew.
01:38Fifth year out of Southern California.
01:39Raylan Berry in his first full year as head coach of the New England Patriots.
01:48Finding that so many first-year coaches find in this league, Bob, and that is, it is tough to win.
01:54And sometimes you're not in control of your own destiny, Phil.
01:57That's the tough part about coaching.
01:59First down, two tight ends.
02:01It is Newsom and Harry Holt.
02:02And Danielson wants to throw.
02:04It is complete to Ozzie Newsom, and he is thrown down at the 30-yard line.
02:09One of the progress at the 38th.
02:13Roland James on the stop.
02:16One of the defensive strategies of the Patriots, Phil, is the rush of the outside linebackers.
02:21And this time, you don't see Andre Tiffin was rushing.
02:24He was picked up very well that time by Ozzie Newsom.
02:27That's when the pass was completed.
02:30And I like, Phil, what the Browns are doing so far.
02:32But he's thrown the ball twice on first down.
02:3587th consecutive game in which that man has got a pass.
02:39And he goes in motion.
02:40Now comes back to the near side.
02:42The give is the near side.
02:44That's Mac.
02:45Tries to sweep the end, and he'll get nothing.
02:49Phil, the Wizard of Oz, of course, Ozzie Newsom is a great tight end.
02:53A terrific receiver for the Browns all these years.
02:56Sometimes the wrap on Ozzie is not the greatest blocker in the world.
02:59You'll see him trying to block on 56 in the red here, Andre Tiffin.
03:0382 is Newsom coming in motion.
03:05Tiffin stands him up, beats the blocker, and forces him to play wide.
03:09Fine play by the all-pro Andre Tiffin.
03:12Not exactly the way they like their tight ends to block.
03:16Third down and six from the 36-yard line.
03:18Three wide receivers now for the Browns, Brennan Weathers and John Jefferson,
03:24who has yet to catch a pass in a Browns uniform.
03:27From the shotgun, Danielson looks left.
03:29Now goes for Brennan.
03:30He shoots the ball at the 48-yard line and goes into the 42
03:34before Lonnie Lippert knocks him down.
03:36A fine catch by Brian Brennan, the second-year man just coming back
03:45from the injured reserve list.
03:47And I think the addition of Brian Brennan to this offensive team
03:50of the Browns still will help open things up a little bit.
03:53Coming open against the Patriots zone, coming across the middle,
03:56caught the seam, went up nicely for the ball, and came down with it.
04:01First down playbook at the Patriots 42-yard line.
04:04In motion is Brennan.
04:12A little delay roll.
04:14Flag is down.
04:15Danielson's pass is complete.
04:17Ozzie Newsom is out of bounds at the 26-yard line.
04:20But hold every...
04:21First down Cleveland.
04:22That's Newsom in motion.
04:24They give right up the gut.
04:26That is Kevin Mack to the 17-yard line.
04:30Close to another Cleveland first down.
04:32A fine running play, Phil.
04:35This is a little tackle trap.
04:36It used to be when I was playing, more there was guards who were the ones
04:39who were doing the pulling and the trapping.
04:40Nowadays, you're seeing big, strong people like number 74, Paul Farron,
04:44who weighs 270 pounds, pulling and trapping there.
04:47A fine play for the tackle, enabling the ball carrier to get some good yardage.
04:51Ernest Beiner, an effective runner this year.
04:53But a tackle trap, something you're seeing more and more of.
04:55It's amazing the size of these athletes nowadays are able to pull and trap.
05:01Short of the first down by about four inches.
05:04Eleven minutes and four seconds to play in the first period.
05:07No score.
05:08The Browns, with the first possession of the ball game,
05:12have moved the ball down to the Patriots' 17-yard line.
05:15Bob, you mentioned at the outset of our telecast,
05:18you particularly love the running game as an offensive lineman.
05:22Why?
05:23Well, I think it's the essence of the offensive line.
05:25It enables us to be on the offense.
05:26We dictate to the defender what we're going to do.
05:28When you're fast attacking, you're sitting back reacting to what he's doing.
05:32Out of the eye formation, a second down and less than six inches.
05:36Second man through.
05:38That's Beiner.
05:38He has the first down at the Patriots' 14-yard line.
05:42Dodd Blackman on the stop with help from Ken Sims.
05:49Very impressed so far, Phil, with the play of the Cleveland offensive line.
05:53They're a big, strong group.
05:54270, 270, 270, 280, 280 pounds.
05:59Everything over 270, 3 or 4 pounds.
06:01That's a lot of beef up front.
06:03Now the Braves have scored 71% of the time
06:09and they have penetrated their opponent's 20-yard line.
06:12Not a bad ratio.
06:14That's Brian Brennan in motion.
06:16Patriots jumped to be a free down for the Browns.
06:18And again, it is Beiner moving near the 10-yard line
06:21and he is tackled by Larry McGrew.
06:24I think we may have drawn old Jewel off sides there.
06:28Julie Adams, number 85, may have jumped a little bit early.
06:33Off side.
06:34Nine-yard line.
06:35That's Beiner.
06:39Oh, look at that pull on the left side.
06:41Cleveland, touchdown.
06:44This quarter, all year long.
06:46That bar approaches the football.
06:48The Patriots will get their first look at the big skin.
06:51And oh, this bar movement.
06:53That is starring a yard deep.
06:54And he's coming out.
06:55And takes it out of bounds at the 28, maybe the 29-yard line.
07:04Taking a look, Phil, at this touchdown,
07:06you're going to see some fine offensive line play by the left side.
07:09The 74, Paul Farron walling Julie Adams out until it's too late.
07:13Really a position block.
07:14Julie had tried to take the outside there
07:16and got to it because the play was going up the inside.
07:19There you see 62.
07:20Third fire the run.
07:22First and 10 Patriots.
07:24Eason, big drop.
07:26Comes near side.
07:27He has got Tony Collins out of bounds near the 40-yard line.
07:34Now for the Patriots, as I said at the top of our telecast,
07:37it's a very spotty offense.
07:39And these are the guys responsible.
07:40Eason, Craig James, Tony Collins, the running backs.
07:43The wide receivers, Morgan and Fryer.
07:45The tight end is Lynn Dawson.
07:46But look for Derek Ramsey to play a bunch.
07:49The offensive line, Holloway, Hannah, Brock, Wooten, and Steve Moore.
07:53It has been an injury-riddled offensive line.
07:56Out of the eye, James and Collins.
07:59That's Collins on the street right.
08:02And he has got a drop hit beat by Don Rogers.
08:05Oh, the exterminator of the ball.
08:09Don Rogers, fine player, Phil.
08:11Last year, the American Football Conference Rookie of the Year
08:14and a real leader in that secondary.
08:16He'll hit you.
08:19The Browns defense, it is Reggie Kemp, goalie Kemp, Harrison.
08:22The linebacking core is Bob Kuchenberg-Menson.
08:26Perhaps the best in all of football.
08:28The backfield, Bennefield, Rose Rogers and Hansford Dixon.
08:30He took it down at 7th to the 42.
08:35That's Frank James.
08:36On his feet, still on his feet at the 45.
08:39Cuts inside.
08:40It is finally stopped from behind.
08:44Scott Nicholas playing for an injured Tom Puzido.
08:47Makes it a touchdown-saving tackle at the 29-yard line.
08:52An excellent call, Phil.
08:54The Patriots know that the Browns linebackers, outside linebackers,
08:58Banks and Matthews, are coming upfield.
09:00This time, Clay Matthews, 57, was upfield.
09:03And took himself out of the play because the ball carrier cut up inside.
09:08And you see Matthews, 54, 57, and White trailing there.
09:11An excellent, excellent call.
09:13And Craig James, of course, feels he's not being utilized enough,
09:16not getting the ball to him enough.
09:17And that run will go a long ways towards Jiminy again.
09:20A little crossing pattern over the middle.
09:22It is complete to Stanley Morgan.
09:24He caught up the football.
09:25A week ago, Bob Kuchenberg against the interception.
09:46He now has a fumble recovery.
09:48And, oh, it was a big one.
09:49From the 9-yard line, Danielson and company out of the eye.
09:53He wants to put it up.
09:54He's coming near side.
09:55That's Brian Brennan.
09:56One catch on today.
09:57Side steps to sideline.
09:59And Brennan is out of bounds at the 26th.
10:04Miami leading the Steelers at the Orange Bowl.
10:07No surprise there, I suppose.
10:09A fine play by the young man.
10:11He stretched the ball out.
10:12Knew exactly where the sticks were.
10:15Saw that he's going to be tackled a few inches short of the first down.
10:18Stretched the ball out about a yard farther than his body.
10:20Here, you'll see it.
10:21Stretching it out just right there.
10:24The referee marks it precisely where the ball hit the ground.
10:28That difference enabled him to gain the first down.
10:30Heads-up play by the young man.
10:37First down.
10:40That's Beiner.
10:40Broubles the football and the Patriots recover.
10:51So the Browns, who entered the ball game minus two in the giveaway-takeaway department, have buffed it up again.
10:59You see the charge by the offensive line.
11:02Nice hole here.
11:05Beiner going through.
11:06Fine play except for one thing, Phil.
11:08You've got to keep the ball with you.
11:09And stripped away, and you just don't want to leave the ball hanging outside, especially on the inside in heavy traffic like that.
11:17Andre Tippett scored a touchdown a week ago, and Ray Guy mishandled the punt.
11:22And now he recovers a fumble at the Patriots' own 29-yard line.
11:2711 minutes, 39 seconds to play.
11:29Eason wants to put it up.
11:31He's got time.
11:32And he almost hits his tight end, Lynn Dawson.
11:35The pass tipped by Chip Banks.
11:38Dawson was running free.
11:40Not very many linebackers in the league make that play, Phil.
11:43Chip Banks being 6'4", and a former basketball player, a fine athlete.
11:47This is a completion against most teams.
11:49Dawson, three catches coming into the ball game.
11:55He has won thus far on the afternoon and barely missed his second.
12:00And there's Andre Tippett on your right, number 55.
12:03Coach Marty Schottenheimer feels that Chip Banks is the most talented defender on that team.
12:08Tony 4 of 6.
12:09There's the draw.
12:10It's to James.
12:11He is still running, still running it down at the 38-yard line.
12:16Mock continues to roll.
12:20Miami continuing to lead the Steelers 7-0 now in the second quarter at the Orange Bowl.
12:25San Francisco, a Roger Craig touchdown reception from Montana.
12:28Chicago and Tampa Bay scoreless in the second period.
12:34Watch what happens to Irving Fryer on this last play.
12:42A little face masking.
12:43Well, I don't blame him.
12:44He tried to put the old elbow in the face there.
12:46A little couple of Banny Roosters pecking at each other on the sidelines there.
12:51They're down and two.
12:52Take a look at this play.
12:53Tony Poundan starts right.
12:55Now goes back left.
12:57Eason misses a block on Al Gross,
12:59and it is Gross who forces him out at the 35-yard line.
13:05Al Gross made the tackle, Phil,
13:06but credit Clay Matthews was a heads-up, all-pro type of play that time.
13:10He smelled that one out.
13:11He was all over it, didn't allow the ball carrier, the play to develop,
13:17and the ball carrier had to reverse his field,
13:19chasing the ball carrier right back into his defensive cohorts.
13:23Fine play by Clay Matthews.
13:24Ten minutes, 44 seconds to play on the first half,
13:29but it is Camarillo on for his second punt of the day.
13:33Phil, there was two consecutive plays, all-pro type plays,
13:36first by Chip Banks getting up making a deflection,
13:38and secondly by Clay Matthews.
13:39Clarence Weathers, who has one fumble today, has the ball.
13:45He does not call for the fair catcher, did he?
13:48Hold on a minute.
13:50Now one official over there says he did.
13:52Cedric Jones on the hit.
13:55A 45-yard punt.
13:57I think they're going to pick that flag up.
14:04You might be right, Phil.
14:06I didn't see the fair catch signal,
14:08and it was very close.
14:13There's no foul on the play.
14:15There's no foul.
14:15It's first down that way.
14:17Time out.
14:18Now you can credit Jerry Markbright's officiating crew
14:22for wisely picking up the flag.
14:23Clock stopped with 10.
14:2535 to play.
14:26We're deadlocked.
14:29The Browns with the football following the punt
14:31at their own 21-yard line.
14:34Brennan and Clarence Weathers, the wide receivers,
14:37and Danielson's looking.
14:38Now the little screen.
14:39That's Beiner.
14:40He has got some room at the 32 and down.
14:46Steve Nelson.
14:47He's the man who leads that linebacking core
14:49from his inside spot on the left side.
14:51Mike Babb, outstanding clearing block.
14:54Well, Bob, Tuesday night at 8 o'clock
14:56right here on NBC,
14:57the American League Championship Series begins.
15:00Don't forget the best of seven this year.
15:03It all begins at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.
15:06The Blue Jays and the Kansas City Royals.
15:10That should be a dandy, Phil.
15:11Oh, the way George Brett's hitting the baseball.
15:14Of course, that outstanding pitching staff up in Toronto,
15:16it will be an outstanding series.
15:22Second man, Beiner.
15:25Nothing but red jersey.
15:27Oh, what a shot.
15:30Rod McSwain laid on Beiner.
15:33You're right.
15:33We could hear that one up here, couldn't we?
15:35That's about the time that I'm very happy to be up here
15:38and not down there on the field.
15:40Excellent job by Blackman here,
15:42stringing the play out.
15:43Roland James, number 38 there in red.
15:45And here you're going to see McSwain coming up,
15:47putting the kibosh on the young ball carrier.
15:49Like two bighorn mountain rams colliding.
15:52We heard that one up here in the booth.
15:53Helmet to helmet.
15:55And you called that fun for 15 years.
15:59Suck it down in nine.
16:01My wife forced me to do it that long, Phil.
16:03I didn't want to.
16:04Oh, okay.
16:05Short drop by Danielson.
16:07There's a little in pattern.
16:08Brennan is hit right in the kidneys.
16:10He sure was hitting the kidneys,
16:14and I'm quite sure that he's going to have
16:16a little bit to say to quarterback Gary Danielson.
16:18Something along the lines of,
16:19hey, Gary, old buddy, you know,
16:21I just came back off the injured reserve list,
16:22and I'm not real eager to go back.
16:24How about putting the ball in front of me
16:26instead of behind me?
16:28Now, you're right.
16:29Brennan was on the IR
16:31because of a dislocated shoulder.
16:36Indianapolis now out in front of Buffalo.
16:3914-7.
16:39George Wansley, a seven-yard run
16:42early on in the second period.
16:44Here in Cleveland, it's 7-7,
16:46the Browns and the Patriots.
16:48Third down and nine.
16:49Look in pattern.
16:50That is Clarence Weathers.
16:51The former Patriot has a first down
16:54at the 44-yard line.
16:57And Clarence not getting up.
17:02Bill, I think he was lassoed,
17:04more or less bulldog, I should say,
17:06by Fred Marion.
17:07He probably has a neck ache of some sort.
17:13Now, while the Cleveland staff looks over Clarence Weathers,
17:16the clock stops with 9.24 to play in the first half.
17:21Clarence Weathers is okay.
17:22He came off the field on his own accord.
17:25Dan is a little roll right.
17:26He has got back.
17:28And plenty of running room
17:29to the New England 33-yard line.
17:32Fred Marion, the man who took Weathers out
17:35with help from Ronnie Lippitt,
17:37this time takes Kevin Mack to the ground.
17:39Kind of like the game plan of the Cleveland Browns,
17:45you'll see Ozzie Newsom out here in the open
17:47trying to throw a little block for Ernest Beiner here.
17:50Doesn't really get his head in front of Fred Marion,
17:53and that's why he can't throw the block.
17:55But just being down there hustling
17:57by the all-throw veteran Ozzie Newsom.
17:59First and ten for the Browns
18:05at the New England 33.
18:078.24 to play first half.
18:09That's Newsom in motion.
18:11Backwards pass.
18:12Brennan this time's going to Newsom.
18:14Look at this play.
18:15Just like they draw it up, Phil.
18:43The Wizard of Oz getting into the end zone
18:44once again a little razzle-dazzle
18:47from the ultra-conservative Cleveland Browns.
18:49What's going on here, Phil?
18:54Now, who says the Browns have instituted
18:57a Woody Hayes style of offense?
19:01You're looking at one of the truly great tight ends
19:03in the history of the game.
19:05Flags are down as Bars sends it
19:07whistling to the uprights.
19:09Hold on a moment.
19:09Of course, Brian Brennan was Doug Flutie's favorite receiver
19:17at Boston College.
19:18And with all the razzle-dazzle
19:20we saw from Doug Flutie and company
19:22over the last couple of years,
19:23it should come as no surprise
19:26that Brian Brennan can flat-out whistle a football.
19:31Well, as Don Shuler would say,
19:32the more things you can do, the better.
19:33There's an encroachment foul
19:37prior to the snap.
19:38The whistle killed the play.
19:40Number 55 defense.
19:42The penalty will be enforced on the kickoff.
19:45We'll replay the trial.
19:50Ozzie Newsome.
19:53His second touchdown of 1985.
19:55Do you realize, Bob Kuchenberg,
19:59that since 1979,
20:01the Wizard of Oz has caught more passes
20:03than anyone else in the NFL?
20:05Now, that's saying something.
20:06That is a mouthful.
20:08More than Largent,
20:09more than Winslow,
20:10and more than Charlie Joyner.
20:14Well, for Matt Barr,
20:15it's almost automatic.
20:17And again, a flag is down.
20:22Mark Bright is listening.
20:23I think this is going to go against the Patriots.
20:26The try is good.
20:28We have offside number 42
20:30on a successful try.
20:33We'll also penalize that foul on the kickoff.
20:35There'll be 10 yards on the kickoff.
20:37Time out.
20:39The Browns, instead of kicking from their own 35,
20:42will let it fly from their own 45
20:44with 8.15 to play in the first half.
20:49Browns leading the Patriots 14-7.
20:52Take a look at this kick.
20:53It's as short as you'll ever see.
20:55It is caught by Cedric Jones.
20:58And there's not much return at all.
21:01Nothing but orange and black.
21:04Johnny Davis leading the charge.
21:06Take a look at this razzle-dazzle touchdown, Phil.
21:11This is a very difficult play to execute.
21:13First of all, you've got to have your,
21:15you've got to have a receiver doing something
21:16he doesn't do very well, throwing the ball.
21:18You'll see the secondary,
21:19the Patriots was fooled there.
21:21Fred Marion making a late recovery.
21:23But this is a play that if it works,
21:24it works big, of course.
21:25But it's very difficult to pull off.
21:27And there's only a few times in the season
21:29when you have the proper conditions to try that.
21:32Wonderfully exciting play, though,
21:33by the Cleveland Browns.
21:35Collins and James are the running backs
21:36out of the I formation.
21:37The Patriots down by a touchdown.
21:39Play action.
21:40Eason is airing it out for Fryer.
21:43And outstanding double coverage
21:47by Frank Minifield and Don Rogers
21:49negates the long completion.
21:52That one fooled no one, Phil.
21:54Frank Minifield was with Irving Fryer,
21:57stride for stride.
21:59The ball thrown in.
22:01Oh, you'll see a little pushing there going on.
22:04Phil, I don't know.
22:05A little unnecessary contact there.
22:07That perhaps could have been called.
22:08But one of the things that happened there
22:10is the Patriots are now throwing
22:11against a fairly brisk breeze here.
22:13And that ball tended to hang up a little bit
22:14and enabled Frank Minifield
22:16to be right with Irving Fryer that time.
22:19Second down and 10.
22:20Eason with time.
22:22And a lot of time.
22:23Look at this.
22:23Stanley Morgan is wide open.
22:26And shoved out of bounds by Don Rogers
22:29at the 48-yard line.
22:32Phil, this is exactly what's been missing
22:34in the New England offense so far in 1985.
22:36He's been throwing to Derek Ramsey
22:38and Tony Collins.
22:39But on successive plays,
22:40he's now deep to Irving Fryer
22:41and this time to Stanley Morgan.
22:43Wide open on the sidelines.
22:45This is the kind of down-the-field artillery
22:48that the Patriot fans have been clamoring for
22:51all year long.
22:52And rightfully so.
22:53For Morgan, his second catch of the day.
22:55He only had three all year coming into this game.
22:58That's Collins.
22:59Not much at all.
23:00We pause briefly for station identification.
23:05This is the NBC television network.
23:08This is WBZ TV for Boston.
23:11Seven minutes and 29 seconds to play on the first half.
23:18Bill Stone with Bob Kuchenberg.
23:20And we have had a dandy thus far.
23:22Claiborne on top of the Patriots 14-7.
23:25The I-back is Collins.
23:29James is the up-back.
23:32Eason on second and 10.
23:33That's Collins on the little player.
23:36Tries to outrun Eddie Johnson.
23:38It is tripped up by his shoestrings.
23:40Fine play by Eddie Johnson.
23:42He's the leader in that linebacking core.
23:44He's making all the signal calls,
23:46calling the changes.
23:47What happened?
23:48What was a great play about that play?
23:49Eddie Johnson had a lot of real estate to make up
23:51because Clay Matthews was blitzing
23:53and Tony Collins was floating out to the side there
23:56and Eddie Johnson had to run about 20 or 25 yards
23:59to make that shoestring tackle.
24:03If you are looking for number 50 in white, Tom Cousineau,
24:08chances are you will not see him in action today.
24:10At his place is Scott Nichols.
24:12Cousineau with hemorrhoidal surgery earlier in the week.
24:16Eason on the out pattern to Friar.
24:17Oh, what a catch by the Nebraska Star.
24:20Wonderful catch.
24:21Irving Friar, a very potent weapon.
24:26As we said earlier,
24:27they need to get the ball to this man here.
24:29You're going to see Friar driving the Browns downfield,
24:32faking to the inside, cutting to the outside,
24:34and the ball is there, perfectly thrown.
24:37The coverage really couldn't have been better.
24:39Felix Wright all over him and Al Gross,
24:40but when you have that kind of a throw and timing,
24:43you just can't stop it.
24:45Yeah, you said at the outset of our telecast,
24:48Bob Kuchenberg,
24:48that Eason has got to get the ball to number 80 and 86.
24:52He has done it thus far here in the first half.
24:545.52 to play.
24:56Patriots down by a touchdown.
24:58Out of the pro set, Eason.
25:01Looking long again.
25:03Going for Stanley, and it is underthrown.
25:06Intercepted by the Nickelback, Larry Brazile.
25:10Badly underthrown for Eason,
25:13his ninth interception of the year.
25:15Bill, that ball should not have been thrown,
25:19and that reminds me of something that the Raiders said last week.
25:22Said Tony Eason's very predictable.
25:23You see him throwing to his left here.
25:26The receiver, Stanley Morgan, was covered very closely there.
25:30What Tony was doing was trying to look the defenders off.
25:33He was looking to his right, looking to his right,
25:35and at the last minute, he turned to his left
25:37and threw the ball to his left.
25:38Well, there was nothing to throw to.
25:40The Raiders last week said that whichever way that Eason looks,
25:44that's the way he's going to throw.
25:46Eason today, 7 for 11, 122 yards, and now that interception.
25:51All of last year, Bob, Eason threw for a total of 8 interceptions.
25:56So far, in 4-plus games in 1985,
26:00he has delivered 9 to the opposition.
26:04From the 3-yard line.
26:06Kevin Mack ties out across the 7 near the 8.
26:12Again, Bill, the Cleveland offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage.
26:15You're right.
26:16All of last year, Tony threw only 8 interceptions,
26:18had a fine year, and so far this year,
26:20with only a quarter of the year gone, he's thrown 9.
26:23But that's the one thing he can't do is get conservative.
26:26He's got to continue to be aggressive,
26:28and he cannot let this interception slow him down
26:32and take his confidence away.
26:36Kevin Mack, 9 carries for 61 yards.
26:42Now give us to Finer,
26:44and he has taken it right in behind Mike Babb.
26:46It's the play, Bob, that you spoke of in the first quarter
26:49where that running back has the option of taking it off the left or the right of the center.
26:53That's right.
26:53They're relying on Mike Babb and George Liltia and Dan Fike to get movement on the nose tackle
26:58and the two inside linebackers,
27:00and that creates running room for the backs.
27:02That time, however, Steve Nelson,
27:03Oatnelli, the veteran there,
27:05anticipated the play,
27:06and even just prior to the snap started charging toward the center
27:10and beat the right guard Dan Fike and made the play.
27:13What's the call here, Bob, on third and one?
27:16If you're down there on the offensive line,
27:18what are you looking for your quarterback to call?
27:20Third and one, you've got to,
27:21you've got to get the ball to your up back
27:24and tuck in behind your big offensive line.
27:27In this case, it would be Kevin Mack.
27:29A little quarterback roll.
27:34Look at this.
27:34It is Mack on the little dunk pass.
27:38And he has knocked out of bounds.
27:40That's the 30, six-yard line.
27:43I can't believe this, Phil.
27:44He's a boring Cleveland Browns
27:47with three yards in the cloud of this Cleveland Browns.
27:49I guess that's why I'm an offensive lineman.
27:52That was not a line buck, was it?
27:56Well, Mack slid right through the line,
27:58and Danielson found him.
27:59Nobody home.
28:01Interesting call in the shadows of the goalpost.
28:04Roland James on the tackle.
28:06The first down now,
28:07way out at the 36-yard line
28:09with 4.15 to play in the first half.
28:10Don't forget, stay tuned.
28:12Bob Costas, Pete Axtel,
28:14Mahmoud Rashad
28:15with all the scores and highlights
28:16on NFL 85 upcoming
28:19in just four minutes and 15 seconds.
28:22Danielson, looking long.
28:24Cannot get around Larry McGrew.
28:34McGrew really pressed into service
28:35because of the misfortune
28:37that has befallen Clayton Weissoun.
28:40That's right, Phil,
28:41and I'm personally very sorry
28:42to see that happen to Clayton Weissoun,
28:44one of the fine,
28:45really fine young linebacker prospects
28:48in the league.
28:48In two consecutive years now,
28:50he's had tragic injuries,
28:52and your heart has got to go out
28:54to a man like Clayton Weissoun.
28:55Larry McGrew doing a fine job
28:56filling in for him there.
28:57The fans were booing Larry
28:58because they thought he was
28:59a little extra rough
29:00on that tackle of the quarterback there.
29:03Second down at 6 from the 40.
29:04The clock continues to turn.
29:06We're at 3.29 remaining
29:07first-half action.
29:0814-7 Browns.
29:09Danielson once more.
29:11Looking for the screen to develop
29:12and just threw the football away.
29:15What was interesting is
29:16Kevin Mack was being hemmed in.
29:18He could not slide out
29:19to catch that football.
29:21That's right, Phil.
29:22A lot of times,
29:22a savvy linebacker
29:24will diagnose a screenplay
29:25and realize that
29:26the halfback or the fullback
29:27is going to be the receiver
29:28and actually hold on to him.
29:29It's quite legal
29:30and very effective.
29:32The quarterback there,
29:32though, Danielson,
29:33being the savvy veteran himself,
29:35realized that
29:36and just threw the ball
29:37in the general vicinity
29:38of a receiver
29:39and therefore avoiding the sack
29:41and the intentional grinding call.
29:44Kevin Mack has come out
29:45of the ball game.
29:46The lone running back
29:47is Ernest Beiner.
29:47Weathers,
29:48John Jefferson
29:49and Brian Brennan,
29:50the three wide outs.
29:54Patriots are up close.
29:57Third down and six.
29:59Nearside.
30:00It is intercepted.
30:02Raymond Claiborne,
30:03his second interception
30:04of the year
30:05and he could go.
30:06He is out of bounds
30:07at the 18-yard line.
30:09Danielson,
30:10his first interception today,
30:12his fifth of the year.
30:14Phil,
30:16that of course
30:16would remind
30:17the Cleveland Brown fans
30:18here of a year ago
30:19when Raymond Claiborne
30:19made the big play
30:20to turn the game around
30:22and win the game.
30:22I think what happened here
30:23is Danielson was fooled.
30:24The Patriots had eight men
30:25in the line of scrimmage
30:26and at the very last of the snap,
30:28they backed off the ball.
30:29Danielson did not get
30:30the defense that he anticipated
30:31and threw the ball
30:33trying to hit
30:34Clarence Weathers
30:35but instead hit Raymond Claiborne.
30:37It was the old bait and switch.
30:39The Patriot defenders
30:40were all up on the line
30:41showing blitz
30:42but at the snap
30:43they backed out of there
30:44and gave Danielson
30:44something that he did not anticipate.
30:48Danielson,
30:4811 for 18,
30:50164 yards
30:52and an interception.
30:58Collins.
30:59Oh, what a block.
31:00Collins dives
31:01to the 16-yard line.
31:04You're right, Phil.
31:04A splendid block
31:06by Irving Friar
31:07cracking back
31:08on the linebacker.
31:08That's something
31:09Coach Berry told us last night.
31:10With all the talent
31:11that Stanley Morgan
31:12and Irving Friar possess,
31:14you might expect him
31:14to be rather timid
31:15when it comes to blocking
31:16but not the case.
31:17Both of these
31:18really wonderful wide receivers
31:21are also good blockers.
31:22I don't know if we can see it here
31:23cracking back.
31:24You saw just the tail end
31:25of it there
31:25but that enabled
31:26the ball carrier
31:27to get into the plush yardage.
31:29Second down and nine.
31:30That's Collins.
31:31Tries to turn it inside.
31:33Brown's pursuing well
31:34and it is Don Rogers
31:36on the tackle
31:37out of bounds
31:38at the 12-yard line.
31:40Clock continues to tear.
31:42Now it is stopped
31:43with 2.33 to play.
31:47Following up, Phil,
31:48on Stanley Morgan
31:49and Irving Friar's blocking
31:50ambition and ability,
31:53sitting in the booth
31:53right next to us right now
31:54is one of the all-time
31:55greatest teams,
31:56Hall of Famer
31:56Paul Warfield.
31:57He was a vicious blocker.
31:59You don't see it that often
32:00but Morgan and Friar
32:01will go after him.
32:02How about that score
32:03from the Superdome?
32:05The Saints over the Eagles
32:0620 to nothing
32:07in the second quarter.
32:09Here in Cleveland
32:10it is 14 to 7 Browns.
32:112.33 to play.
32:14Third down and four
32:15out of the shotgun.
32:16Eason unloads.
32:18It is almost picked off
32:20again by Brazil.
32:22Intended for Cedric Jones.
32:24Oh, Eason is a lucky man.
32:27He got away with that one.
32:28Chris Rockins had a safety blitz on
32:30and he was in the quarterback's face
32:31so he came through unscathed.
32:33Came right through
32:34the offensive line there.
32:36Tony had no time.
32:37Little high snap there.
32:38By the time he gets the ball possessed
32:40he's got to start dodging Browns.
32:43Probably shouldn't have
32:44put this ball up.
32:45Very fortunate here.
32:47Tony Franklin has come on.
32:50Eason will hold.
32:51On fourth down and four
32:53from the 12-yard line.
32:54Bill Credit
32:55number 83
32:55Cedric Jones
32:56with a fine play
32:57preventing that interception.
32:59Spotted at the 19
33:01officially a 29-yard attempt.
33:03Franklin lets it fly
33:05and it is good.
33:06Tony this year
33:075 for 5.
33:09Go back to last year.
33:10He is 8
33:11for his last 8 attempts.
33:15The man in the brown jacket
33:16is the Browns team physician
33:18Dr. John Bergfeld
33:19looking at
33:19Gary Danielson
33:21throwing arm
33:21and Bob
33:22I think Danielson's hurt
33:23as Tony Franklin
33:24lets it sail.
33:26It's Young
33:27across the 30.
33:38What a return
33:40by Glenn Young
33:41and it gives the Browns
33:42excellent field position
33:44at the Patriots.
33:4849-yard line
33:49and Bernie
33:50Kozar
33:51listen to this crowd
33:52for Kozar.
33:56They love it, Phil.
34:04Bernie Kozar
34:04of course
34:05down from my way
34:06went through
34:06the University of Miami
34:07Finance School
34:08in two and a half years
34:09this is one smart cookie.
34:12This is his first action
34:13as a Cleveland Brown
34:14with the exception
34:15of preseason.
34:17Ball spot on
34:18the midfield stripe.
34:19Kozar
34:19loses the football
34:20and it's covered
34:21by New England.
34:25Steve Nelson
34:26with the recovery
34:27and now we have got
34:29some fisticuffs.
34:36Phil so often
34:37you see that
34:37when you have
34:38a new quarterback
34:39in there
34:39the center quarterback
34:41exchanges
34:41taking for granted
34:43so many times
34:43and when you have
34:44a new quarterback
34:44in there
34:45the timing
34:45is a little bit
34:45different.
34:46I don't know
34:47if Bernie
34:47had taken any snaps
34:48on the sidelines
34:49with Mike Babb
34:50but if he hadn't
34:51that's precisely
34:52the reason.
34:53Bernie pulling out
34:53there perhaps
34:54a little bit early
34:55not used to
34:56the center snap
34:57that you see
34:58that many many times
34:59when you have
34:59a new quarterback
35:00or a new center.
35:03We have personal
35:04falls on both sides
35:06after the ball
35:06is blown dead.
35:0855 and 74
35:09the penalty's offset
35:10and it's first down
35:11that way.
35:13Paul Farron
35:14and Don Blackman
35:15are the guilty party
35:16but they are
35:17offsetting.
35:18No damage done.
35:18Bernie Kozar
35:19a rather
35:20inauspicious beginning.
35:24Certainly
35:25inauspicious
35:25is a proper word.
35:26Again
35:27when you have
35:27a new quarterback
35:28coming in
35:28you want to take
35:29some practice
35:30snaps with your center.
35:33First down
35:34Patriots
35:342-0-9
35:35to play.
35:37Play action.
35:41That is the big
35:42tight end
35:42Derry Gramsley
35:43made here
35:44out of Kentucky.
35:48He is very near
35:49the first down
35:50and I believe
35:51he has it.
35:51Clock stops
35:52two minutes
35:53to play.
35:54Patriots
35:55trying to grab
35:55a lead.
36:01Two minutes
36:01to play
36:02in the first
36:03half
36:03and then we
36:03will take you
36:04to NFL 85
36:05Bob Custis
36:06on the update
36:07desk.

36:14almost a one-hand
36:15grab by
36:16Tony Collins
36:17near the 27-yard line.
36:18Here's Gary Danielson's
36:25right shoulder
36:25and I think
36:26we have seen
36:26the end of
36:27Gary Danielson
36:27today.
36:28Bernie Kosar
36:29right behind
36:29the Cleveland
36:32bench
36:32continuing to
36:33throw.
36:34Gary Danielson
36:35took a couple
36:35of snaps
36:36a few moments
36:37ago while we
36:37were away
36:38and just shook
36:39his head
36:40I don't think
36:40I can make it
36:41coach.
36:42That does not
36:43look good for
36:44Gary Danielson
36:44and Browns.
36:46Second and
36:4710
36:47with time
36:49now throws

36:55what a move
36:56Collins
36:57put on Chris
36:58Rockins
36:59to break free.
37:00He sure did
37:01Phil
37:01this is a
37:02tight man-to-man
37:03defense by the
37:04Browns secondary
37:05and Chris Rockins
37:06was man-to-man
37:07on Tony Collins
37:07there and
37:08couldn't handle it.
37:09He broke free
37:10and not only
37:10broke away
37:10from Chris Rockins
37:12but broke a couple
37:12of tackles
37:13after he caught
37:13the ball.
37:16You see Collins
37:17coming open
37:18right across the
37:18middle here.

37:28You know
37:28you talk about
37:29the problems
37:29that this
37:30Patriot
37:30offensive unit
37:31has had here
37:32in 1985
37:32Bob an offensive
37:33unit that quite
37:34frankly just
37:35really ran up
37:36the points
37:36in the preseason.
37:37You talked about
37:37it during the
37:38first period
37:38the fact that
37:39it is an
37:40offensive line
37:41that has been
37:41decimated by
37:42injuries.
37:43It is also
37:43a core of
37:44wide receivers
37:45that quite frankly
37:46has not learned
37:47how to break
37:48off patterns
37:49and make what
37:49they call
37:50sight adjustments.
37:51What are we
37:52talking about here?
37:53Well we have a
37:53new offensive system
37:54in.
37:55A year ago
37:55they went to
37:56Ron Meyer
37:56and Coach Barry
37:57has had to bring
37:58in a new
37:58offensive
37:59coordinator
37:59and indoctrinate
38:01a new
38:01offensive system
38:02and they were
38:03not really
38:04equipped last
38:05year to handle
38:06the blitzes.
38:06The offensive
38:07line wasn't
38:08sophisticated to
38:09handle certain
38:10blitzes and
38:10the wide receivers
38:12were not schooled
38:12at how to
38:13recognize blitzes
38:14and break off
38:15their patterns
38:15and get ready
38:16for a fire
38:17drill.
38:18First down
38:19and 10 from
38:19the 17
38:20a minute 44
38:21to play.
38:21It is 14-10
38:23rounds.
38:23That's Friar in
38:24motion and here
38:25he comes this way.
38:27Play action.
38:27Neeson
38:28looking for
38:29Morgan
38:29now jumps it
38:30off the
38:30cows and he
38:31can now hold
38:31the football.
38:34Big Reggie
38:35camp came through
38:36here.
38:37Phil had three
38:38sacks last week
38:38and he's really
38:39gaining momentum.
38:40Reggie had been
38:41bothered by a foot
38:42injury earlier in
38:43the season and was
38:44their leading rusher
38:45last year with 14
38:46sacks and because
38:47of the injury had
38:48not been really that
38:49effective until last
38:50week when he sacked
38:51the Chargers
38:52quarterback three
38:52times there you
38:54see Steve Grogan
38:54calling the Patriot
38:56plays in the
38:56sideline much like
38:58a third base
38:58coach would.
38:59He's got a third
39:00base coach's head
39:01on doesn't he?
39:01He doesn't
39:01actually call the
39:02plays.
39:03Signals the men.
39:05You're right.
39:05That's right.
39:05I stand
39:06correct.
39:08Second down
39:08and 10.
39:12Short drop by
39:13Eason looking for
39:14Collins but will
39:15be content to go
39:16to Tony Collins
39:16and Collins is
39:18chased out of
39:19bounds by Clay
39:20Matthews.
39:22You know it's
39:23interesting Phil
39:24Tony Collins a
39:25couple of years
39:25ago was such a
39:26fine runner made
39:27the Pro Bowl
39:28thousand yards
39:29plus and he
39:30really has not
39:30been that effective
39:31as a rusher the
39:32last couple of
39:33years averaging
39:33only 3.3 yards
39:35per rush this
39:36year and I'm a
39:37little bit puzzled
39:37as to why Tony
39:39hasn't continued to
39:40develop as a
39:41runner.
39:42When I said
39:43Steve Grogan was
39:43sending in the
39:44plays there Phil
39:44you're absolutely
39:45right he was not
39:45calling the plays
39:46he was sending
39:47them in or relaying
39:48them.
39:48In Miami sometimes
39:49you'll see Don
39:50Strzok calling the
39:51plays.
39:53Eason will trot to
39:54the far sideline
39:55with a minute 32
39:56seconds to play.
39:58The Patriots would
39:58love to take a
39:59half time lead.
40:02Time remaining
40:031 minute 32
40:04seconds here in the
40:05first half.
40:07The Patriots
40:08third down and
40:10four at the
40:11Cleveland 12 yard
40:12line and it has
40:13been a case thus
40:13far Bob Kuchenberg
40:14of really a
40:16sputtering Patriot
40:18offense but
40:19outstanding play
40:20from the defense
40:21and special teams.
40:23Well once again
40:23the special teams
40:24got points on the
40:25board.
40:25You always love to
40:26see that.
40:27Coach Perry not
40:28real consistently
40:29happy here but I
40:29think he's got to
40:31be encouraged by the
40:31play of Tony Eason
40:32with accepting the
40:33one interception.
40:34Tony's playing
40:35aggressive football
40:36today.
40:36Something that he
40:37needs to do.
40:43Third and four.
40:47That's Derwin
40:47Williams in motion.
40:49Flags are down
40:49everywhere and so is
40:51Tony Eason.
40:53Oh was he stuck by
40:55Chip Banks.
40:55had a little confusion
41:02down there Phil with
41:02the timing.
41:11A little confusion on
41:12the snap count there.
41:13There was some
41:13premature movement.
41:16It was almost a
41:17fumble.
41:18There was almost an
41:18exchange.
41:19As I say there was
41:25some confusion down
41:26there.
41:26I really don't know
41:27if there was a
41:28timeout or ball was
41:30in play but I know
41:31that there was an
41:32exchange problem
41:33between the center
41:34Pete Brock and
41:35Tony Eason.
41:37Third down and
41:38nine now from the
41:3916.
41:43Eason up and
41:44over.
41:46Pass intended for
41:48Cedric Jones.
41:49He could not get
41:49back to make the
41:50catch.
41:51Great coverage by
41:52Frank Minifield.
41:53And here comes
41:54Tony Franklin again.
41:56Credit Frank
41:57Minifield with a
41:57fine play there.
41:58Minnie was all over
41:59Irving Fryer.
42:00The Browns had the
42:01goal line blitz on
42:02there putting heat
42:03on the quarterback.
42:04Tony did the only
42:05thing that the
42:05coverage dictated
42:06and that was throw
42:07the old alley-oop
42:08pass to Irving
42:09Fryer hoping that
42:10Irving could out
42:11jump little Frank
42:13Minifield but credit
42:14Minnie with a fine
42:15play there.
42:16Eason will hold.
42:20Franklin thus far on
42:21the day is one for
42:22one.
42:24From 33 yards away
42:26Franklin has not
42:28missed this year.
42:29Go back to last year
42:31he has made eight in a
42:32row.
42:34Will it be nine?
42:36It is.
42:37So the clock stops
42:38with 1.23 to play
42:40on the first half.
42:40Tony Franklin has
42:42just tied his own
42:43career record for
42:44nine in a row.
42:46He had that in the
42:47early part of 1984.
42:51Bill we've got a
42:52ball game on our
42:52hands here.
42:55And it is really for
42:56the most part Bob in
42:57the opportunistic
42:58defense of the New
43:00England Patriots.
43:03Yes that's right.
43:04The Patriots are
43:05taking advantage of
43:06something here that's
43:06been their nemesis
43:07thus far this year.
43:08They've been minus
43:09eight or nine in the
43:10giveaway category this
43:12year.
43:12That's been hurting
43:13them.
43:13And they're capitalizing
43:15on that same problem
43:16in the Cleveland Browns
43:17offense today.
43:18Well a minute 23 to
43:20play on the first half
43:21and we will take you
43:21to NFL 85.
43:23Bob, Pete, Ahmad
43:24will update you scores
43:25and highlights around
43:26the league on this
43:27the fifth weekend of
43:28NFL action.
43:30And don't forget
43:30Tuesday night from
43:32Exhibition Stadium in
43:34Toronto.
43:34it's the Jays and the
43:37Kansas City Royals game
43:39one for the American
43:41League flag here in
43:431985.
43:45It is the best of seven
43:46instead of the
43:47traditional best of five
43:49league championship
43:50series.
43:51NBC will bring you not
43:53only the American League
43:54championship which
43:55begins Tuesday but also
43:57the National League
43:57championship series that
43:59gets underway Wednesday
44:00at Dodger Stadium in
44:02Los Angeles Valenzuela and
44:03John Tudor of the St. Louis
44:05Gardens.
44:06That is Glenn Young.
44:08At the four-yard line
44:09Franklin will let it sail.
44:11Short kick.
44:13That's Young at the
44:1415-yard line.
44:17He moves it across the
44:1827 out near the 28.
44:21And that is where the
44:22Browns offensive unit will
44:24put it in play.
44:25And here comes Bernie
44:26Kosar again.
44:30The fans welcome him.
44:34If you just joined us a
44:36moment ago, Kosar's first
44:38snap.
44:40He fumbled the ball,
44:41recovered by the
44:42Patriots.
44:43If this were a Hollywood
44:44strip bump, he would have
44:46taken that snap and
44:47launched a 50-yard
44:48touchdown past
44:48Declarence Weathers.
44:49Well, I know if I were
44:50writing the movie, he
44:51certainly would have.
44:52Not hardly the way
44:55Bernie sat and dreamed
44:57about his debut here in
44:58Cleveland, I'm sure.
45:00But this kid has such a
45:01chance.
45:02Are you telling me?
45:04Wait a minute, Kuch.
45:05Are you telling me that
45:06those years down in Miami
45:08were not scripted?
45:10The undefeated season was
45:12not a script.
45:13Particularly that wonderful
45:15game against Nebraska.
45:16I'd say that was one of
45:17the fine collegiate games
45:18I've ever seen.
45:19And this Kosar is one of
45:21these players they refer to
45:23as a franchise player.
45:25The people here in
45:26Cleveland, Mr. Modell on
45:28down, are so very excited
45:30and enthused about the
45:32future of Bernie Kosar.
45:33They didn't, I'm sure,
45:34want him to come into the
45:35game under these conditions,
45:37however.
45:37Coming up next on NBC,
45:39the second half of our
45:40doubleheader.
45:40Most of you will see the
45:41front-running Chiefs take
45:42on the Raiders at the
45:44Coliseum.
45:45There's the other regional
45:46game some of you will be
45:47seeing.
45:47Check your local listing now
45:49for the game in your area.
45:50With most immediate, a minute
45:55and 20 seconds away from
45:56NFL 85 with Bob Costas,
45:59Ahmad Rashad, and Pete
46:00Axtell.
46:02First and ten rounds.
46:05They lead the Patriots by one.
46:08Kevin Mack is hitting the line
46:15of scrimmage and driven back
46:17that is Steve Nelson and Larry
46:19McGrew.
46:21Looks as though Coach
46:22Schottenheimer may be content
46:23to go into the locker room,
46:24Phil, with a one-point
46:25advantage rather than having
46:28his young quarterback get
46:30risque here and put the ball up
46:31for grabs.
46:32Now the Browns wide receiving
46:36core is a good one.
46:38Of course, at the start of the
46:39year, they had Willis Adams,
46:41Fred Banks, and Reggie
46:42Langhorne.
46:44But today it is Weathers,
46:46John Jefferson, and Brian
46:47Brennan.
46:48There's the give.
46:48Mack is hit in the backfield
46:49and dropped there again by
46:51Steve Nelson.
46:52Got to be a lot on his mind
46:58right now, Phil.
46:59He's come into a ball game
47:01where he didn't really expect
47:02to play this early.
47:03He's young.
47:04It's his first opening ball game
47:06and he's deep in his own
47:08territory here.
47:09I think what he's going to do,
47:10of course, just keep the ball
47:11on the ground and call time
47:12out at halftime and go listen
47:13to his coach and talk things
47:15over and then come out anew
47:16in the third quarter.
47:19This will be the final play
47:20of the first half.
47:21Would you go for broke
47:22here, Bob, or just run it
47:24out?
47:24I think I'd put it up for
47:25grabs.
47:25He's got the wind behind
47:26him.
47:26Throw it downfield.
47:29Nope.
47:31It's going to be Kevin Mack.
47:34And that's the way the first
47:35half will come to an end.
47:37The Cleveland Browns with a
47:38touchdown in the first period,
47:40another strike in the second
47:42period.
47:43They're 14 points for the
47:45Patriots, Bob.
47:46All 13 of theirs came in the
47:47second stanza.
47:49Yes, an encouraging second
47:50quarter for the Patriots.
47:51They've made a couple of
47:52costly errors, but they've
47:54also capitalized on a couple
47:56of Browns' mistakes.
47:57I like the aggressive style
47:58that Tony Eason has exhibited
48:00so far in the first half,
48:02and I'm excited.
48:03It's going to be a whale of a
48:04ballgame here in the second
48:05half.
48:05The Browns came into this
48:06ballgame deadlocked with the
48:08Pittsburgh Steelers in the
48:09AFC Central Division.
48:11But, Bob, you look at their
48:12two losses to the Cardinals and
48:13the Cowboys.
48:14Both times, they gave up 20
48:16points or more, and their two
48:18victories over the Chargers and
48:20the Steelers, they gave up but
48:22one touchdown in each one of
48:23those outings.
48:24Well, there's no secret, Phil.
48:25You win with defense in this
48:26league, and no team better
48:29exhibits that fact than the
48:31Cleveland Browns.
48:32They've been winning with a good
48:33ball-control offense and a good
48:34strong defense, but they're
48:36throwing the ball a bit more
48:37today, and I'm excited.
48:37We've got a ballgame on our
48:38hands.
48:38Now, the Browns leading the
48:40Patriots 14-13.
48:42You're right, Bob.
48:43We have a ballgame.
48:44NFL 85 halftime activities will
48:47continue in just a moment.
48:49We'll be right back after these
48:50messages from your local
48:52station.
48:55He said at the outset of our
48:56telecast, Bob, Easton would
48:58have to get the ball to Morgan
48:59and Fryer, and he has done it
49:00thus far today.
49:01Yes, he sure has.
49:02Fryer's only caught one pass for
49:0321 yards, Morgan three for 67
49:06yards, but the point is he's
49:07doing it.
49:08He's throwing the ball down
49:08field, and that's causing the
49:10Browns defense to respect that.
49:12All right, let's go now to
49:14NFL 85 and Bob Costas.
49:17Bob?
49:25Okay, Bob Costas back along
49:26with Pete Axtelman and Ahmad
49:27Rashad.
49:28Let's get you updated on the
49:29scores from around the league in
49:30the game some of you are
49:31watching.
49:32Pittsburgh with the halftime
49:33lead at the Orange Bowl, 17-14.
49:35The Steelers have never won in
49:37Miami.
49:37They are 0-4 there over the years.
49:40A trendy banner along the sideline,
49:42the Miami Vice squad.
49:44Well, early on, it's Tony Nathan
49:46up and over the top for a 7-0
49:48Miami lead.
49:49That's in the first quarter.
49:50In the second quarter, Nathan's
49:51fortunes take a turn for the worst
49:53as he is hit, fumbles, and Donnie
49:55Schell, ever the opportunistic one,
49:57recovers.
49:58That leads to a Walter Abercrombie
50:00touchdown.
50:00Later on that drive, Abercrombie from
50:03the one-yard line to tie it up at
50:047-7 apiece.
50:05After a Gary Anderson field goal gave
50:07Pittsburgh the lead at 10-7, it's Dan
50:10Johnson.
50:11Not Don Johnson of Miami Vice, but Dan
50:13Johnson who catches this Marino
50:14touchdown of two yards.
50:16But the Steelers reclaim the lead.
50:18Look at this great catch by the 6-foot,
50:206-inch Ouija Thompson, and he uses
50:22every bit of that height and reach to
50:24pull in the one-yard toss from Malone
50:25just before halftime, 17-14, in favor of
50:29the Steelers.
50:30In the game, some of you are watching
50:31New England at Cleveland, and the
50:33Browns with a 14-13 lead at the half.
50:36Coach Marty Schottenheimer's team has
50:38the best rushing average in the
50:40National Football League through four
50:41weeks.
50:42Ernest Beiner is part of the reason.
50:43A nine-yard touchdown bolt in the
50:45first quarter, and it's 7-0 in favor
50:47of the Browns.
50:48However, New England on this punt
50:50ties the ballgame.
50:52Rich Camarillo's kick can't be handled
50:54by the former Patriot Clarence
50:56Weathers.
50:56He bobbles it once, regains the handle,
50:59and then when he's hit, he coughs it up
51:00again, and Johnny Rembrandt eventually
51:02falls on it in the end zone, game
51:04tied at 7 in the second quarter.
51:06Razzle-dazzle for the Browns to take
51:08the lead at 14-7.
51:09That's a lateral, not a pass, from
51:10Danielson to Brian Brennan.
51:12Brennan then passes to Ozzie Newsome.
51:14The play covers 33 yards.
51:16They go ahead 14-7.
51:18A bit later on, however, Gary Danielson
51:20injured a shoulder, went out of the game,
51:23and was replaced by Bernie Kosar.
51:24In Kosar's first play from scrimmage
51:27in a regular National Football League game,
51:29he fumbled the snap.
51:30The Patriots recovered.
51:31That led to a Tony Franklin field goal
51:33and a 14-13 lead for the Browns
51:35at the half.
51:36Elsewhere, San Francisco and Atlanta.
51:38The 49ers having a tough time
51:39with the Falcons, who are 0-4.
51:417-3 is the score as they come up
51:43to halftime.
51:44Roger Craig caught a 46-yard touchdown
51:45pass from Joe Montana.
51:47Craig leads the NFL with eight
51:49touchdowns scored.
51:50Tampa Bay has the lead at home
51:51over Chicago.
51:5212-0 is the score in that game.
51:54Their only touchdown is Steve DeBerg,
51:5621-yard pass to Kevin House.
51:58Donald Ikwabuki has a couple of field goals,
52:00also missed a point after for Tampa Bay.
52:02The Buccaneers lost in their opener
52:04to the Bears at Soldier Field,
52:05trying to get some revenge today.
52:07The Bears, of course, come in at 4-0.
52:09The Packers are in front at halftime,
52:11playing at home over the Lions.
52:12The score there is 20-3.
52:15Indianapolis at home to Buffalo,
52:16and at the Hoosier Dome,
52:17the Colts lead at 21-10.
52:19They haven't yet reached halftime.
52:20This is Hank Bulla's first game
52:22as the head coach of the Bills,
52:23but so far the results haven't been
52:25much different than they were
52:26under Kay Stevenson.
52:27They grabbed the lead 7-0
52:29when Greg Bell took this pitch
52:30and the second-year man from Notre Dame
52:32went in from 18 yards out.
52:34However, the Colts tied it
52:35late in the first quarter.
52:36Mike Pagel on the rollout from two yards.
52:38The kick made it 7-7.
52:41Vince Ferragamo of the Bills
52:42has been intercepted more often
52:44than any quarterback in the NFL.
52:45Twice in the first half
52:46to bring his season's total to 11.
52:48He's thrown for only two touchdowns.
52:50This one is off the hands
52:51of receiver Eason Ramson
52:52and a fine diving interception
52:54by the linebacker Barry Krause.
52:56It leads to a touchdown
52:57for the Colts,
52:58scored by George Wansley.
52:59One of two he would score
53:00in the first half.
53:01Look at him break tackles here.
53:03A superior run.
53:04He lunges over the plane
53:05of the goal line.
53:0621-10 is the score at halftime
53:08as Wansley later scored
53:09a three-yard touchdown.
53:10It is not yet at halftime.
53:11I should check that.
53:12A few minutes remaining
53:13in the second quarter.
53:14And the Saints.
53:15The team Pete Axelm
53:16again picks against,
53:17leading it home
53:18over the Eagles
53:19by a score of 20-7.
53:21And they have taken
53:22Randall Cunningham out
53:23at quarterback.
53:24The Eagles have replaced him
53:25with Ron Jaworski
53:25and Jaworski has thrown
53:26a touchdown pass
53:27to John Spagnuolo
53:29for the only score
53:29for the Eagles.
53:30So what about those Saints?
53:31When are you going to get
53:31on their bandwagon?
53:32Well, I never learn, Bob.
53:33We all know that.
53:34Everyone who follows me
53:35knows that.
53:35But I do have an announcement.
53:37There's no truth to the rumors
53:38that the Eagles,
53:39the way they're performing today,
53:40have applied to join
53:42the major indoor soccer league.
53:44Another snide remark
53:45that is best left alone.
53:47We'll send it back
53:47to the ballparks now
53:48and we'll check with you
53:49a bit later on in the day.
53:51For Ahmad Rashad,
53:52who was brilliant
53:52in this segment,
53:53and Pete Axelm,
53:54I'm Bob Costner.
53:55See you later.
53:55NFL 85 will continue
54:08right after these messages
54:09from your local station.
54:16Welcome back to Cleveland Stadium,
54:18everybody,
54:18with the Browns leading
54:19the New England Patriots
54:2014-13.
54:21And it has been a game,
54:22quite frankly,
54:23that has been dominated
54:25by turnovers.
54:26For the Patriots,
54:27they have been on the receiving end
54:28of four Browns turnovers,
54:30while the Browns have been
54:31on the receiving end
54:32of two Patriot miscues.
54:34It has.
54:35Both these teams
54:35have been hurt this year,
54:37filled by not only turnovers,
54:38but penalties,
54:38and it's holding true today.
54:40You know,
54:40the Browns led this ball game
54:427-0 in this first quarter.
54:44But in the second period,
54:46the Patriots got on the board
54:47on a punt problem.
54:49A week ago,
54:49the Raiders had the same problem.
54:51Today,
54:52it was the Browns
54:53who coughed it up.
54:54Yes,
54:54Clarence Weathers,
54:55up until two weeks ago,
54:56was a Patriot, Phil,
54:57and perhaps he's figuring
54:58he's still playing
54:59for the Patriots here today.
55:00This play really got the Patriots
55:02back in the ballgame.
55:03Johnny Rembert covered it.
55:04A week ago,
55:05it was Andre Tippett
55:05with the touchdown.
55:06That made it 7-7.
55:08And then in the second quarter,
55:09the Browns went up 14-7.
55:12Take a look at this play.
55:13Is this nifty or what?
55:14What a sweet play this is.
55:15You don't see this very often
55:16because so many elements
55:17have to be perfect,
55:18but Brian Brennan there,
55:19what a first ball,
55:20catch the ball,
55:21then get it off quickly.
55:22And the old Wizard of Oz,
55:24Ozzie Newsome,
55:25once again,
55:25getting into the end zone.
55:27Well,
55:27that made it 14-7,
55:28Browns.
55:29The Patriots were to add
55:30two more field goals
55:31in the second period of play.
55:33Both of those field goals
55:34followed Browns' turnovers,
55:35an interception,
55:36and a fumble.
55:37That's right.
55:37Both teams being very
55:38capitalistic today,
55:39taking advantage of the turnovers
55:41and cashing in,
55:42getting points on the board.
55:43Bob,
55:43we said at the outset
55:44of the Telecaster,
55:45for the Patriots to be effective,
55:47Eason would have to get
55:48the ball downfield.
55:50He has completed
55:50three passes to Stanley Morgan,
55:52only one to Irving Pryor,
55:54but it is not
55:55for the lack of trying.
55:56That's right.
55:57Three receptions
55:57to your wide receivers
55:58isn't all that impressive
55:59statistically,
56:01but he's attempting.
56:02He's going downtown.
56:03He's going,
56:04trying to create
56:04some vertical movement
56:07or some room here,
56:08and by doing so,
56:09even just by attempting,
56:10even if he's not successful,
56:12he's causing
56:12the Cleveland Browns
56:13defense to respect that,
56:15and therefore,
56:16he's going to give
56:16his halfbacks
56:17and his tight end receivers
56:18some running room.
56:19Of course,
56:20the turnovers
56:20are not telling
56:21the whole story.
56:22The statistics,
56:23take a look at the edge
56:24in possession.
56:25It is.
56:26It's very one-sided.
56:27The Cleveland Browns
56:28have had the ball
56:28nearly twice as much
56:29as the Patriots
56:30here in the first half,
56:3119 and a half minutes
56:32to 10 and a half minutes.
56:34The Patriots are going
56:34to have to keep the ball
56:35a little bit more
56:36in the second half
56:37and keep their defense
56:38off the field
56:39if they expect
56:40to hang in there
56:40in the second half.
56:42This, by the way,
56:43has been a downfall
56:44of the Patriots
56:44so far this season.
56:45They've been a horrid
56:47second-half ball club,
56:48particularly in the
56:49fourth quarter.
56:50Their defense has allowed
56:5135 points this year
56:52in the fourth quarter.
56:53You know, Bob,
56:54we talked in the second period
56:55when Bernie Kosar
56:57came on,
56:57as you look at the rookie
56:58out of Miami,
56:59his first snap
57:00as a member
57:00of the Cleveland Browns
57:01was a fumble
57:02recovered
57:03by the New England Patriots.
57:05He has yet to throw
57:06a pass
57:07in the regular season.
57:08You kind of wonder
57:09if perhaps this
57:10will be a Hollywood
57:11second half
57:12for the rookie
57:13Bernie Kosar.
57:15Of course,
57:16he only played
57:16two years
57:17of college ball
57:18and...
