We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street whether or not they still viewed exams as the best way to judge students.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Custon Betts. Today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking people about exams and that's because I'm afraid, cover your eyes students, exams are nearly here. Both GCSEs, A-levels and university end of year exams are right on the horizon now. They add a lot of stress to people's lives. We want to know if people think it's still the right way to assess children and whether they worry about the stress that it imposes on people.
00:21In Ireland we have a system where like at age 18 if you don't do well on exams it can just dictate the rest of your life from like going to college and stuff so I think it's basically like you should do continuous assessment but not exams because work and continuous assessment is more helpful as well in real life situations like when you have to work and interact with other people.
00:39And when I did it it was real exams and the preparation that that enabled you to do. It's not true for everyone and I've heard the explanations why they don't do it which is perfectly reasonable but I think there's something to be said for the grind and what that sort of makes you do in terms of preparation.
