00:00First and 10 at the 24 to open up in a two-tied end set, Dilger and Pollard.
00:04Edren James had his problems against New England three weeks ago
00:07and cannot find space on the opening play.
00:11Otis Smith combining with Anthony Pleasant to make the stop.
00:15Indianapolis on offense, big change, right tackle spot.
00:18Adam Meadows a durable figure, not part of the action today because of a hamstring injury.
00:23The rookie Ryan Dean gets the start out of Northern Illinois.
00:26Backs and receivers, James, he's gone over 100 yards in three of the four games this year.
00:32The one game, New England, they held him under 100.
00:36Also a change with Jerome Payton out with an injury.
00:40Reggie Wayne gets the start of receiver.
00:41Marvin Harrison getting involved.
00:44Out across the 25 for a gain of four on the pass for Manning.
00:47Mike Vrabel making the stop.
00:49It'll be third down.
00:50New England defensively, and what a job they did against this Indianapolis offense three weeks ago in Foxborough.
00:56Front four, Pfeiffer, as we know, not your typical defensive end.
01:00Linebackers, Ted Johnson getting the start, but Teddy Bruschi is back and available for Bill Belichick.
01:05And in the secondary, both Law and Smith had touchdown returns off of interceptions in the first meeting of the season against Indy.
01:13Colts come out, and they do use the huddle, so they're trying to slow down their pace and make sure that they improve on execution.
01:19We'll call it a third and seven out of the shotgun, and a flag comes down.
01:23The game clock is not working inside the RCA Dome, so the clock you're seeing on our screen is unofficial.
01:31The only person that has the official time is Tom White, our referee here today.
01:35And we assume that periodically he'll fill us in.
01:38Defense, number 45, play a game, attempting to bust a false start on the offense.
01:45It's a five-yard penalty.
01:46Remains third down.
01:48So now a third and two.
01:51And Peyton Manning told us, he says, we're going to come out and use the huddle and try to give our receivers more information in the huddle
01:57in terms of what they could expect for the hot read.
01:59And he says also, it gives this receiver a little bit more time to digest the information.
02:04And that's been the criticism here at Indy throughout the week, that they've gone with that no huddle too much.
02:11After excelling with it the first two weeks, sidearm throw, and Manning makes the connection to Reggie Wayne over the middle for a first down.
02:18It's a seven-yard game.
02:20And Reggie Wayne, what an interesting story this young man is.
02:24Coming out of Miami, Santana Moss really was the guy that everybody focused in on there.
02:28But Indianapolis was high on him.
02:30They didn't even talk to him before the draft.
02:32They picked him anyway.
02:33He was shocked.
02:33Well, Manning had known Reggie Wayne.
02:35They both grew up in New Orleans, had worked out together over the summers.
02:38And what Manning likes about him, he says, he's a hands catcher and not a body catcher.
02:42Also call him very polished for a first-year pro.
02:45He's dealt with some injuries and making his second start because of the injury to Payton.
02:49Over the middle.
02:50And Dilger.
02:52Off play action.
02:53It turns into a big play.
02:55Lawyer Malal making the stop.
02:57And that's 24 yards into New England territory and down to the 36-yard line.
03:03And other than scaling down the no huddle, Manning says they're going to come out and continue to be aggressive in attacking the defense with their passing attack.
03:10This is right up the middle.
03:11So any time you see them throwing the ball up the middle, it's going to come off play action trying to get the linebackers to fight it working on that play.
03:17Hurry to the line.
03:18It's good.
03:18James cuts it upfield.
03:19Trying to carry tacklers.
03:21And he can.
03:22Forward progress will get him to the 35 for a gain of one.
03:26Pfeiffer and Pleasant collaborating to make that stop.
03:28That's something that Bill Belichick discussed at great length.
03:34Edrin James, he'll hurt you inside, but he told us he will absolutely kill you on the outsides.
03:39That's where they'll contain him.
03:40They want to contain Edrin James on the edges.
03:43Don't let him get outside.
03:44And they also want to take away the cutback plays and get every man in a gap to shut him down today.
03:49On a second and nine, Manning, a throw, on a slack from Gilder.
03:54And the tight end releasing to make the catch.
03:57Brought down by veteran Brian Cox, but a gain of seven as they inch closer to a first down.
04:04And the key for the Patriots defense, even Peyton Manning told us, he said,
04:07we have to get yards after the catch.
04:09He said, we're going to get the completions, but we need to be able to pick up yards after the catch in order to move the chains.
04:14And so the Patriots are going to have to tackle well after the catches are made.
04:18That time, they were able to do so when Dilger made the reception.
04:21Manning is cooking so far.
04:23Four of four, 43 yards, throwing the football.
04:26This is a third and two.
04:27Tony Simmons, the former Patriot, has checked in.
04:30Manning throws into traffic and incomplete.
04:33Wayne took a smack from Brian Cox.
04:36And getting physical is something that the defense of New England has talked about all throughout the week.
04:41And they did it three weeks ago.
04:42Yeah, and Brian Cox has a good read on the quarterback.
04:45He's just reading the eyes of Peyton Manning.
04:47He knows there's going to be a crosser coming over the middle, and he's ready to deliver a blow.
04:51Something he did in week three in their first game when he delivered a hit on Jerome Payton.
04:56It really sent a message for the rest of the day.
04:58They were very physical in that football game.
05:00That hit on Payton, first play from scrimmage.
05:03You're right, it did set the tone.
05:0546-yard attempt for Mike Vanderjant.
05:08Vanderjant has been one of the best in the business and a block.
05:11Block kick!
05:12Down the sideline.
05:14Leonard Myers and New England.
05:17Off the block from Brandon Mitchell.
05:21With tremendous field position to start out on their first offensive series.
05:26A 35-yard return off of this block.
05:35They just do a good job of getting penetration coming right off the corner.
05:40You can see Myers is just in position to pick it up in good heads-up play.
05:45Have to give Gerdakis credit.
05:46Or I should say Hunter Smith did a good job of coming down and pursuing and making the tackle.
05:53A double tied-in set for New England.
05:55First drive of the day opens up at the Indy 29.
05:59Brady and some razzle-dazzle.
06:01On the reverse, David Peckin cut in the upfield.
06:05Patton to the end zone.
06:07Touchdown, Patriots!
06:08It all started with the big play on special teams.
06:16And now the Patriots' first play from scrimmage on offense.
06:19Wonderful play.
06:20It's just, they come out with multiple formations.
06:23And we talked about this with the coach.
06:24Their defense.
06:25Very difficult to read the multiple formations by this Patriots' offense.
06:30Patton just takes it.
06:31And they're in man-to-man coverage, so they catch the back side not really paying attention.
06:35They're able to use the speed of David Patton to outrun the defense on the other side.
06:39Adam Vinatieri on for the extra point.
06:42How about that for a sequence?
06:46Vinatieri bangs it home.
06:49A blocked field goal attempt.
06:5135-yard return.
06:53And on the very next play, David Patton with a rushing touchdown.
06:57It's 7-0 New England.
07:0129-yard rushing touchdown for David Patton.
07:05The first rushing touchdown of his NFL career.
07:087-0 New England in front.
07:11Adam Vinatieri kicks it off with Rhodes waiting.
07:13Rhodes angles over from the goal line.
07:17Rhodes looking for a block.
07:19Down the sideline.
07:21Stumbles forward to the 27-yard line.
07:24Matt Chatham got him down low for a 27-yard return.
07:28Manning back on the field for Indy when we come back.
07:31Now here's the touchdown by David Patton.
07:37But watch the quarterback, Tom Brady, who will pull.
07:39And the center, Damian Woody, they'll seal just creating a lane for David Patton.
07:44You don't see many centers like Damian Woody being able to get out in front.
07:48But they both get excellent blocks.
07:50And Patton just uses his speed to race up the field into the end zone for the touchdown.
07:55Indianapolis takes over from the 28-yard line out of the shotgun.
07:59Fakes the handoff.
08:00Manning over the middle and finds Marcus Collard.
08:05Collard of physical presence gets himself across the 45-yard line for an 18-yard pass and catch.
08:12Also, big picture, Solomon.
08:14Think about how big that block is on the field goal attempt.
08:17How bad was New England on special teams a week ago?
08:20Bill Belichick worked out throughout the week.
08:22He said, excellent.
08:23He said, we have to come out and we have to be really good on special teams because we need good field position.
08:29Because he's afraid of Matt Vanderjett, who's a really good kicker.
08:32And he can kick him from a long ways out 45 yards a minute.
08:35That call for entering James and gets tripped up as he comes across midfield.
08:39James could have had more than that five-yard gain.
08:42He got a strong block from Pollard.
08:46Of course, a lot of the big plays over the middle are now coming off the play action.
08:51And the Patriots came out saying, we want to be very physical with the Colts.
08:55We believe that the Colts are a finesse offense.
08:58That's what Ty Law told us.
09:00He said, we have to be very physical with them.
09:02But he says, we have to play smart and not give up the big plays.
09:05And play action.
09:06Second and five.
09:07Ball is spotted at the 49 of New England.
09:09James gets the call again.
09:11James, shoot move.
09:13And gets it out to the 45 for a gain of four.
09:16Looks to be about a yard short of a first down.
09:20Let's go to New York right now.
09:20Jim Nance with an NFL Today update.
09:22Thank you, Ian.
09:23You remember last week how the Ravens were just throttled by Green Bay.
09:27Well, right off the opening kick, a big return.
09:30Then James Jackson runs it in.
09:32Seven-nothing Browns at the start over the Ravens.
09:35Let's go back to Ian and Solomon.
09:37Well, one thing we do know, Jim, that division, things have changed immensely.
09:41Cleveland has credibility.
09:42Cincinnati, Pittsburgh is leading the division.
09:44Go figure that.
09:47Short yardage situation.
09:48It's a first down for Indianapolis.
09:50Edron James.
09:52Low to the ground but maintained his footing for a three-yard gain.
09:57And a new set of downs for Indy to work with.
10:01Edron James, last week, 116 yards on the ground, but he was held to 55 yards on 17 carries in the last meeting against New England.
10:11And I think the Colts have to come out and establish more physical presence in their running game and attack the middle of the Patriots' defense, much like the Miami Dolphins were able to do two weeks ago.
10:20Teddy Bruschi has come onto the field to replace Ted Johnson.
10:24And here's Manning checking off.
10:27Line of scrimmage is the 43.
10:28James running in the south.
10:32He squeezes out about five yards on that carry.
10:35Teddy Bruschi brings him down.
10:38Giving up the big play, Solomon, that's something that Bill Belichick and the rest of the New England defenders that we spoke to focused in on.
10:46They'll give up the dink and dunk, the four-yard run, the three-yard run.
10:49They don't want to get hurt by Manning to Harrison 50 yards.
10:52And Ty Law told us it's imperative that they don't give up the big play.
10:55He believes that this offense, for the Indianapolis Colts, become a little bit impatient when they can't get the big plays.
11:02And that's when they tend to make mistakes.
11:03Last week, New England's defense held the Ladanian Tomlinson to 74 yards rushing.
11:08He came in as the NFL's leading rusher.
11:10On the dunk-off for James.
11:12And James has a first down for Indy at the 30-yard line.
11:16Eight-yard pass play.
11:17Cox and Malone make the tackle.
11:19And all week, you know, in the local papers here, people have talked about as to whether or not this offense needs to change its strategy.
11:28But they've put up some big numbers over the years since Peyton Manning has come over in 1998.
11:33So I think, and when you talk to the offensive coordinator, Tom Moore, he says,
11:36we're just going to keep doing what we've done for the last three years.
11:39As he says, it's proven, and the system will allow us to be able to move the chains.
11:43And so far, they're doing it here today.
11:45On a first and 10 from the 30, here's James.
11:48Goes the hole.
11:49Bouncing off the tackle and down at the 25.
11:51That's a game of five.
11:53Working that right side in the running game.
11:58They're starting to get Andrew and James going.
12:00It's very important that they have some semblance of a running game.
12:04I mean, they're just coming in.
12:05Ted Johnson misses the tackle.
12:06And James is very quick at getting to the corner, getting up in the hole.
12:11Very effective.
12:12100 yards in three of his four games so far this season.
12:15He's going to need a big game here today in order for his team to be successful on offense.
12:19Indianapolis showing some confidence in right tackle Ryan Deem.
12:23The rookie making his first NFL start.
12:25They've gone to the right side a number of times.
12:28Out of the shotgun.
12:29Manning has the protection.
12:31Sails it to the outside and incomplete.
12:32Tony Simmons was in the area, the former Patriot.
12:37Manning is trying to tell Simmons, hey, here's how you've got to run that route.
12:41We don't have, he told us in our meeting, he said,
12:43we don't have any routes where our receivers sit down over the middle.
12:46You have to continue the route, continue running through the zone.
12:49We don't want you to sit down.
12:50So you can see Manning doing a little coaching down there on the football field.
12:53It's funny you would bring up coaching.
12:55One of the great quotes we got from Manning, the chess match.
12:58He matches up in his mind against the opposing defensive coordinator.
13:01Not a free safety, not a cornerback.
13:04And he visualizes a matchup.
13:05So he knows he's going against the Bill Belichick defensive mindset.
13:10And that's quite a chess match.
13:12Shotgun.
13:13Manning on a third and five.
13:15Float.
13:16Too low for Pollard to handle.
13:17And once again, the drive stalls just about in the same area as their last possession.
13:24And the Patriots do a good job.
13:25They've been only rushing three men, but now they bring a number of guys, five players,
13:30and Roman Pfeiffer gets a hand up and tips the ball.
13:33That's why it's not able to make it to the intended receiver.
13:35Good job by the Patriots mixing up the defense.
13:38Mike Vanderjack, on his first attempt of the day, had it blocked.
13:41Third time it's happened in his NFL career, now in his fourth year.
13:45This will be a 43-yard attempt with Indianapolis looking to get on the board.
13:53Vanderjack gets it away cleanly and splits the uprights.
13:59Indianapolis cuts into the New England lead.
14:02Patriots have had one play on offense, but they lead it 7-3 in the first.
14:07New England with a 7-3 lead, 5.42 to go here in the first quarter.
14:15And after a 43-yard field goal for Mike Vanderjack, Hunter Smith will kick it off for Indianapolis.
14:21Kevin Falk is waiting deep.
14:25Here's Falk.
14:27From the eighth.
14:29Middle of the field, then angle towards the sideline.
14:31Here's Falk breaking the tackle.
14:34Trying to double back the other way, and he's brought down.
14:36Bottled up at the 34-yard line.
14:40A 25-yard return.
14:437-3 New England.
14:44Tom Brady operates his Patriots offense in a moment.
