00:00All right Armin in that stadium right next door. We'll have shots of it throughout the afternoon.
00:05The Dolphins have won the toss. They have elected to receive and we are underway as this one rolls
00:10down and into the end zone for the touchback. And so the Dolphins will begin first and 10
00:16of their own 20-yard line as Jay Fiedler comes out onto the field. Intercepted three times,
00:22sacked six times in the loss to San Francisco last week. Those three picks bringing him up to
00:2818 on the season. Well Greg, we talked to Jay Fiedler last night and I think one of his best
00:33qualities as a quarterback in this league is he has a short memory. I asked him, said what about
00:38the three interceptions last week? Did it bother you as the week started? He goes, nope, when I got off
00:43the plane coming back from San Francisco, it was over. That's the way he is. Right off the bat,
00:51on the ground, Lamar Smith. The Miami offensive line, it's had injuries this year. Tim Ruddy,
01:01he's the leader at center. In the backfield with Lamar Smith is Rob Conrad. Chris Chambers
01:07starts for Arande Gadsden who will not play today with a bothersome left hamstring. McKnight
01:12is the other wide and there you see the head coach Dave Wanstead. Second and six. Lamar Smith
01:24again, trying to pop it out to the right side and he doesn't get there. Bobby Hamilton wraps
01:29him up. Let's check that New England defense. Across the front, Hamilton, Brandon Mitchell,
01:35the outstanding rookie, Richard Seymour and Anthony Pleasant.
01:38The linebackers for the Patriots. Teddy Bruschi, number 54. He's everywhere. He's
01:43having an outstanding year. Fine secondary here in New England with Law and Otis Smith
01:48at the corners. To Bucky Jones and Lawyer Molloy are the safeties and the head man here in
01:54New England who has turned this thing around, Bill Belichick. Third and five.
02:01Biedler pulls it down and runs. Up the middle is hit short of the 30-yard line. Not enough for the first down.
02:14So Bucky Jones and Richard Seymour tracked him down.
02:18Well, we got some good sound on the field today, I think, but the one thing, a couple of things that
02:23this Patriots defense does. They're very good on third down passing situations because they do a lot of
02:29different things on defense. But their main goal today, third and five and less, do not let Jay Fiedler
02:36run up the middle for the first downs. They had two players there that time and they stopped it.
02:40Troy Brown is deep for the kick from Matt Turck.
02:43Not very far at all and he's down inside the 40-yard line.
02:51And onto the field will come Tom Brady.
02:56As we said, nine and three since coming on in relief of an injured Drew Bledsoe earlier in the season.
03:02And his numbers, very impressive, Bill.
03:04Yeah, they are. But, Greg, you know, a lot of talk up here.
03:07He struggled the last couple of weeks because the numbers are not outstanding.
03:10Look, that's the way it is for every quarterback in this league.
03:14But we said something to Tom Brady about it this week.
03:16And what did he tell us? He goes, Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator, he said he brought me in his office
03:21and he gave me a tongue last year.
03:24So it kind of stepped him out of everything.
03:26And I think Tom Brady feels good about this game.
03:29From the New England 38, Brady to throw on first down right over the middle and complete out to the 45-yard line
03:36to Kevin Falk coming out of the backfield.
03:38The New England offensive line, they put it together this year.
03:43Damian Woody, got to watch him today, very active as a center.
03:47In the backfield, Antoine Smith and Mark Edwards.
03:50Troy Brown, an outstanding receiver, along with David Patton.
03:54Rod Rutledge is the tight end.
03:55Here is Charlie Weiss.
03:59He is the tongue lashing variety.
04:04On second and three.
04:07The pitch and the reverse.
04:10Here comes Troy Brown.
04:11And Brown is going to go back the other way.
04:15Gets the block.
04:16Tries to turn the corner.
04:17And it's close to midfield.
04:21Jermaine Haley tracked him down.
04:23Well, this is just Troy Brown making the play.
04:26Because the Miami Dolphins, they said early,
04:29we're going to be alert for all the gadgets that the New England Patriots like to run.
04:34And they had people in position to make the play.
04:37Some good blocks in the backside.
04:40Moreland Greenwood gets blocked.
04:43Boy, look at Troy Brown.
04:45A receiver.
04:45When they run the football,
04:47I don't know if he's alert or just scared right there when you look at those guys.
04:51I think alert's the better word.
04:53On first down, trying the left side is Antoine Smith.
04:58Let's check the Miami defense.
05:00Kenny Mixon, Tim Bowens, Jermaine Haley, Jason Taylor.
05:04Familiar front four.
05:05The linebackers for the Dolphins.
05:06Zach Thomas.
05:07He is a tackling machine.
05:09In the secondary, Patrick Sertain had surgery on the little finger of his left hand.
05:14But he's out there with Sam Madison on the corner.
05:17Brock Marion and Brian Walker are the safety.
05:20Defensive coordinator Jim Bates calls a defensive call for Miami.
05:25And straight ahead inside the 45-yard line to about the 43 was Antoine Smith.
05:34Pick up a five and it'll be third and two.
05:36Oh, Antoine Smith, you look at him, number 32.
05:39I think he's one of the biggest reasons why this Patriots team has turned it around from early in the year and especially from last year.
05:46Bill Belichick told us, he says, I went out this offseason.
05:50I knew I needed a powerful, big runner.
05:54Antoine Smith became available in June when the Bills let him go.
05:58And they picked him up right immediately the day after.
06:00Straight ahead inside the 40-yard line and the first down for New England.
06:05Derek Rogers made the stop.
06:09But Antoine Smith, as you said, Phil, Buffalo just let him go.
06:13And what a terrific climb for the Patriots.
06:16Well, you know, you always got to find a place or an offense that suits you.
06:19I think Antoine Smith has found that right here.
06:22And when you look at this Miami defense today, they have been just average when it comes to stopping the other team's run game of late.
06:31And we saw Smith that time going up in the middle where Darryl Gardner used to be for the Dolphins and getting the first down.
06:39Brady to throw.
06:40Pulls him down.
06:41Now looks outside.
06:42He's a piece of inside 35 to Troy Brown.
06:45Out of bounds at about the 32-yard line.
06:49And here is a young man who has really picked up his game this season in the wake of all the problems on and off the field with Terry Glenn.
06:56Well, game, plenty of time to get open.
06:59And, you know, Troy Brown, a lot of people don't know the name.
07:02The Miami Dolphins do.
07:04And the best respect you can get as a player, Dave Wonsett said last night,
07:09we're going to know where he's at.
07:10And when we need to, we're going to double-team him to take him out of their offense today.
07:14He gives it to the first man through.
07:16Edwards, and Edwards pulls his way to the 30-yard line.
07:19It appears to be about a yard shy of a first down.
07:22You know, Greg, you look at this game, the start of it.
07:26We do games every week in the National Football League.
07:29Usually just before the game starts, the fans are just filling up the stadium.
07:32Today, this stadium was full way before the start of the game.
07:38Everybody anticipated it.
07:39And Dave Wonsett was worried about really one thing.
07:43He wants his team to get off to a good start, especially when on a road here in the stadium where the fans are effective.
07:50Keep the crowd out of it early on.
07:51On third and one.
07:52Right on the left side for a first down.
07:54And much more is Antoine Smith still on his feet inside the 20-yard line.
07:59Not a good sign.
08:04It's not only that you run the ball and you get a first down, it's that you run it in there.
08:10And once your players make contact, the Dolphins make contact.
08:15Let's just watch.
08:16There's about five, seven, maybe eight yards.
08:21But the enthusiasm, the effort by the Patriots offensive players right now is greater than the one Miami has put now.
08:29First down at the 19-yard line.
08:33Brady throws outside complete to the tight end, Jermaine Wiggins.
08:37And Moreland Greenwood there for the stop after a three-yard pickup, and it'll be second and seven.
08:44Yeah, we just saw, I think, a real big key, too, for Miami's defense there.
08:49New England, and Greg, we've watched it.
08:51They throw a lot of short passes.
08:55And the key for the Dolphins' defense, okay, let him complete two-yard passes.
08:59Just make sure you make the tackle.
09:01And that's what's hurt the Dolphins' defense and the opponents of the Patriots.
09:06The Patriots kept short passes and make good runs afterwards.
09:09Smith looking for running room and up the middle and gets it to the 16-yard line.
09:15Zach Thomas, Moreland Greenwood in on the stop.
09:19Remember, this Miami defense in their first meeting held New England to 147 total yards.
09:24Yeah, but, you know, that was like six years ago.
09:26That was week four of the NFL season, and so much has changed.
09:31Some of the players have changed.
09:33The styles, you know, the Dolphins, they thought they were one of the best teams in the league then.
09:38They've proven that they're pretty good at nine and four.
09:40But the Patriots, so much better and so much more diversified since that time.
09:45J.R. Redman onto the field and into the backfield now as Brady drops back and throws outside.
09:50Complete to Patrick Pat, and pass, looking for first-down yardage is close.
09:54Not a good spot.
09:55But it looked like he got past the 10-yard line, but it's going to be fourth and about a yard.
10:01A good yard.
10:03Line of scrimmage is the 10.
10:08Oh, they're not.
10:11And Bill Belichick looks like he's going to go for it.
10:13Yeah, there wasn't any hesitation.
10:17I saw Charlie White calling into play immediately.
10:25And it's...
10:26They spotted the ball short of the 10-yard line.
10:30Fourth and one.
10:35Antoine Smith.
10:36He didn't get there.
10:43Moreland Greenwood led the defensive charge.
10:47Everyone on the Miami sideline says, we're going the other way.
10:50And you know what?
10:51They're right.
10:52A fine drive by New England is halted with 6.05 to play in the first.
10:56Well, the Dolphins' defense on fourth and one.
11:01They played run all the way.
11:03Jermaine Haley, submarines underneath.
11:05Then Moreland Greenwood and Brock Marion make the tackle.
11:10Lamar Smith on first down for the Dolphins.
11:13Out across the chain.
11:14The penalty marker is down.
11:18Our first flag of the day after a three-yard pickup.
11:21But it's going to bring the play back and put the Dolphins into a deeper hole.
11:24What did you think about that fourth down, Clark?
11:26Well, I didn't even, you know, everything happened so fast.
11:28I'm not a second-guesser.
11:29But my first thought was, kick the field goal.
11:32It was fourth and one full yard.
11:35And I thought it was important to keep the crowd.
11:3966 off the distance.
11:41Half the distance.
11:43Remains first down.
11:44I thought it was important to keep the crowd and the emotion and all of it going for your football team.
11:49So, big gamble by Bill Belichick, but does not pay off.
11:53And I think the biggest thing, Greg, is I watched the replay during commercial.
11:58The Dolphins were playing run with everybody.
12:02If New England would have thrown it, they were willing to give it up.
12:06Bill Belichick obviously looking for even more crowd involvement with a first down and perhaps a touchdown rather than three points on the board.
12:14Well, we heard that they're going to re-spot this football.
12:16They got on the wrong hash.
12:18We heard Dave Wanstead tell us last night his biggest worry, too.
12:22He goes, man, New England, they are a fast-starting, tremendous first-half football team.
12:29And the stats do bear that out.
12:30They score most of their points, first-half, especially in the second quarter.
12:37So, first and 15 now for the Dolphins.
12:40Fiedler still has it.
12:42Looks downfield.
12:43Throws.
12:44Wide open and completes a change.
12:46McKnight, number 80, out across the 25 and close to the 30-yard line for a first down.
12:51Well, I think we're going to see a different offense today from the Miami Dolphins.
12:59When they do throw it, move Jay Fiedler, spread the defense out, or use play-action passes.
13:05And that time, just a good design, takes advantage of the defense.
13:09That's why the receiver, McKnight, is wide open.
13:12We were congratulating James McKnight, proud papa of a 6-pound, 6-ounce James Jr. just two days ago.
13:18So he needs a road trip to get some rest.
13:20You know, that kind of thing as a father.
13:22But congratulations to him and, of course, his wife, Lamar Smith.
13:28Big hole up the middle across the 35, pulls his way out to the 38-yard line.
13:33Lamar Smith enjoyed a terrific day running the football against these Patriots back in October.
13:39He had 144 yards rushing.
13:41Gosh, I tell you, if you look at some of the Dolphins, they say,
13:45man, that's the last time we ran the ball well.
13:47Because they have struggled with their running game.
13:48They've had injuries, changes at the offensive line.
13:52And Lamar Smith, even with all this, is just not having the type of year that he wants.
13:58Fumbles have made him a cautious runner at times, but a good start for him today.
14:03Lamar Smith re-carries 13 yards on the day.
14:06Fiedler going to give it to him again.
14:08And Smith out over the 40, and that's enough for a first down.
14:11Let's talk a little bit about these warm-weather Miami Dolphins coming up here into the cold weather to play.
14:15Well, good start for him here.
14:17Just avoiding...
14:19I always say a couple things.
14:20When you play in these type of cold games, and if it's your first one of the year,
14:24you've got to get used to handling the football.
14:26Jay Fiedler said it last...
14:28The football absolutely is harder, not as easy to take control of,
14:35and it usually affects running backs and wide receivers more than anybody.
14:40And someone else.
14:41First, that's right.
14:44On the reverse, here comes Diedrich Ward.
14:47Ward trying to turn the corner is out of bounds at about the 45-yard line.
14:50It was interesting to hear both of these coaches in the last couple of days
14:54talking about how the other one likes to play tricks so much.
