00:01First down and 10 from the 37-yard line for the Bengals, their opening drive.
00:05Dillon over the left side, keeps his feet going, lowers his shoulder, and gets to the 45-yard line.
00:15Watch Richmond Webb and Matt O'Dwyer on the left side.
00:18These are me.
00:21Third time they've gotten the ball into the hands of Corey Dillon.
00:25Every time they do it, they're making yards.
00:27And did you see Corey Dillon take Matt Stephens for a ride, put his head down,
00:31and the safety went flying back about three or four yards there.
00:34And that is some power and strength.
00:36And that's what you get with Corey Dillon, coach.
00:38Another spread formation.
00:39They're widening, they're spreading out the defense.
00:41Second down and short.
00:43They need two yards from the 45.
00:45Here's the draw play.
00:46Dillon again.
00:47Dillon has been successful running the football.
00:49Anthony Pleasant, 12-year veteran, making the tackle for the Patriots.
00:54And so far, Dillon, three carries, 17 yards.
00:58You know what I like about that, Gus?
00:59Not only the carries, but he caught the ball in the flat.
01:01They didn't use Corey Dillon in the passing game much at all last year.
01:05Now, there's a weapon.
01:05You get him out in the flat, one-on-one with a linebacker, he can make people miss.
01:09Get him the ball as many times in as many ways as you can.
01:13Of course, they're taking him out here on third and short.
01:15Told us yesterday, be in the lineup on third down most of the day.
01:18Brandon Bennett is the backup to Corey Dillon.
01:23Kitting a short drop, tipped at the line of scrimmage, incomplete.
01:26Bobby Hamilton gets a hand on the football.
01:29And the Cincinnati drive stalls at the 45-yard line.
01:35That'll bring in Nick Harris to punt it away.
01:37Some of the fans thought that was interference by tie law,
01:40but once that ball's tipped, there's no interference.
01:41So Nick Harris, rookie out of Cal, ready to kick it away.
01:48Troy Brown, a dangerous receiver and return man, stands at the 10-yard line.
01:55Good snap.
01:59Wobbly kick, Harris.
02:02And it's fair caught by Brown at the 20-yard line, a 34-yard punt.
02:07So coming up, it'll be Drew Bledsoe and the Patriots on offense.
02:16Bengals coming up empty on offense.
02:18And now New England will get an opportunity.
02:20Bill Belichick, second year as the head coach in New England.
02:25And in two years, he's almost entirely revamped the lineup.
02:2938 new players.
02:32And his team starts from their own 21-yard line.
02:35Drew Bledsoe with Mark Edwards and Antoine Smith behind him.
02:43Quick strike.
02:44Bert Emanuel with the reception spin.
02:46Picks up maybe a yard and a half.
02:49Tackle on the play made by Artrell Hawkins.
02:51Drew Bledsoe, three-time pro bowler.
02:54And Coach Weiss, he is a player.
02:56He is.
02:56And Brent and I were just talking about what a mature guy he is.
02:59Because he's only 29 years old.
03:01Been the starter for this ball club for nine years.
03:03Only Brett Favre has started for a team longer than that.
03:06But he has taken over the leadership role.
03:08One of the captains on this football team.
03:10Quick arm, good feet, a lot of size.
03:13Signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract.
03:16That should keep him a Patriot through the end of his career.
03:20Second down and nine from the 22.
03:23Bledsoe out of the shotgun.
03:25Nice snap.
03:28Here's the handoff going to Antoine Smith over the left side.
03:34No room for him.
03:37Tequillo spikes with the tackle offensively for the New England Patriots.
03:41Grant Williams starts at left tackle.
03:43They thought Matt Light would be the starter, the rookie out of Purdue.
03:45But they go with the veteran on opening day.
03:50Backs and receivers.
03:51Antoine Smith with Buffalo the last few years.
03:54Mark Edwards with Cleveland last year.
03:56Brown and Emmanuel.
03:57Rod Rutledge is the tight end.
04:00Charlie Weiss is the offensive coordinator for the Patriots.
04:05Third down and eight from the 23-yard line.
04:08Split backfield.
04:10Bledsoe to pass.
04:10Bledsoe goes down at the 19.
04:15Darrell Williams.
04:16Backup safety.
04:18Shot the gap and made the sack.
04:21Paul Booker with pressure as well.
04:25Now Gus, there's been a lot of talk about this Patriots offensive line.
04:28But that was a coverage sack.
04:30Third down.
04:31You've got to go ahead and get rid of the ball.
04:32You know the blitz is coming.
04:34Here come the Bengals.
04:35Bledsoe knows he's got to get rid of that ball on the first pitch.
04:38Or there's going to be problems.
04:40And the Bengals excited about their defensive line.
04:43They only had 26 sacks last year.
04:45Had 15 in the preseason.
04:48Here's Lee Johnson sends it away.
04:50Peter Warrick at the 34.
04:53Makes the first man miss.
04:54Warrick in the center of the field.
04:56Still making people miss.
04:58Gets inside New England territory.
05:00But flags are all over the field.
05:02Matt Stephens with the special teams tackle.
05:05And it's a 45-yard punt.
05:07Teddy Brewski's over there telling the Cincinnati Bengals, hey, you clipped us, you held us, you did everything.
05:16This one's got a little bit of a grudge match going in this thing.
05:18Both ball clubs coming off of subpar years.
05:21Need to get going fast.
05:22Now, Lee Johnson punted that ball.
05:25He needed holding the call against the Bengals.
05:28He needed 43 yards to become the all-time leader in punting yardage in the National Football League.
05:34Ron Stark was number one.
05:36And that was a 45-yard punt.
05:38So, it looks like Lee will have the record.
05:40Hey, party time.
05:41Party time.
05:42There you go.
05:43Coach, that was one of your punters.
05:44Excellent.
05:44With a return.
05:46Illegal block in the back.
05:48Return team.
05:49Ten yards.
05:50He spotted a foul.
05:52He'll be first down.
05:53I drafted Lee Johnson out of BYU in 1988.
05:57Super Bowl year.
05:5817 years later, he's the all-time leader.
06:02Back to Cincinnati after this.
06:03The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines.
06:10Celebrating 30 years of freedom.
06:1230 years, one mission.
06:13Low fares.
06:14IBM.
06:15Taking e-business and your business to the next level.
06:18And by Saturn.
06:19Now with two distinctively different car lines.
06:21The L Series and S Series.
06:28Welcome back to Cincinnati.
06:30It's been raining off and on all day.
06:32But the sun has come out for the beginning of this football game.
06:36The Bengals have it at their own 28 first down.
06:39Marco Bataglia in motion.
06:40Here's Kitna going up top.
06:42He's got Darnay Scott, but overthrows him.
06:47When Lee Johnson first came into this league in 1988,
06:51he started trying to sell me stocks and bonds right away.
06:54He told me on the sidelines that he sold me a stock.
06:56He said a tank.
06:57He did.
06:57Yeah, it's gone in the tank with the rest of the market.
06:59Chances of a recovery.
07:01The market's got to get up over 10,000 again.
07:04Look at those numbers, though.
07:05You've got to be around a lot of teams that need to punt a lot in order to get those numbers.
07:09Coach, I figured it out.
07:10Over 28 miles of punting yardage.
07:13Long walks.
07:14Second down and 10.
07:19Here's Dillon running.
07:21Gets a couple of yards in the box on the upper right-hand part of your screen.
07:27Those are current scores in the National Football League.
07:31Trying to keep you up to date on what's going on around the league.
07:33We call it the shadow box.
07:39And we saw this Cincinnati team go deep for Darnay Scott here a couple plays ago.
07:44And that's something they didn't do a lot of last year.
07:45They've got to take some shots down the field.
07:47You can't hit them all, but you know they want to get the ball in Scott's hands.
07:51Third down seven from the 31.
07:52Cincinnati needs to go to the 38-yard line for a first down.
07:57Oh, Kittina throwing a strike underneath.
07:59Caught by Darnay Scott.
08:01He gets to midfield.
08:03It's a game of 19 yards.
08:07Terrific protection.
08:08What's in the inside?
08:11The Bengals picked it all up.
08:13What's coming to the inside?
08:14You're going to get a twist.
08:15Coming to the inside.
08:16Everybody's picking up.
08:18You can get them back out of there.
08:19Yep, and when you get time, you get a deep over route,
08:21the quarterback and the receiver are going to usually win
08:24because that's just tough to cover when you're 18 yards downfield.
08:27So underneath help.
08:28That's exactly it, coach.
08:30Darnay Scott missed all of last year after injuring himself during training camp,
08:34but he is back and 100%.
08:36Kittina again firing underneath.
08:39It's caught at the 40.
08:40Darnay Scott still running.
08:42Makes another man miss and gets to the 30-yard line.
08:46To Bucky Jones with the tackle.
08:48Back-to-back gains of 19 yards.
08:51You're going to watch Darnay Scott go one-on-one with Otis Smith.
08:57Give him a little head and shoulder outside.
08:59Come back underneath on the slant.
09:00Ball's thrown a little high.
09:02Hangs onto it.
09:02Look at him bounce off.
09:04You think that leg is healed up?
09:05It looks like it's healed up to me.
09:09Corey Dillon trying to break it back.
09:11Spins.
09:12And it's taken down by Bobby Hamilton.
09:14Darnay Scott broken leg.
09:16Doesn't look like his leg is injured at all now, Coach Weiss.
09:19I don't think so either.
09:21You know, the one thing about this ball club, though,
09:23and the trend has already set,
09:24keep giving the ball to Corey Dillon.
09:26Throw him a little wide flare.
09:27Left side, right side.
09:28He bounces outside as well as he runs inside.
09:31They told us yesterday he was the fastest guy on the football team.
09:34He's your running back.
09:36Dillon out of the game right now.
09:37Brandon Bennett in to give him a rest.
09:40Dillon so far, five carries, 22 yards.
09:43Second down and eight from the New England 29.
09:46Kitten up.
09:47Throws the outpatter.
09:48Caught by Ron Dugans.
09:50He cradles it and slides out of bounds.
09:57They're spreading it around, Brent.
09:58They're not just throwing,
09:59trying to find Darnay Scott or Peter Warwick.
10:01They're getting the ball to a lot of people.
10:05And you know, Coach, it's nice to get Warwick involved,
10:07but I think Darnay Scott,
10:09after coming back from that broken leg,
10:10they want to get him some touches early,
10:11get that confidence going.
10:12And right now, he's not even thinking about the leg.
10:14He's thinking about beating over to Smith D.
10:16And the total yards so far.
10:19Here's Kitna, loses the ball.
10:21John Kitna fumbles.
10:23And let's see who has it.
10:24New England says they have it.
10:27Kitna fumbled the ball 17 times last year
10:30for the Seattle Seahawks,
10:32and that's the first of the season.
10:34Now, it looked like up here, Coach,
10:36the ball just slid out of his hands.
10:37It's a little humid up there.
10:38Maybe it got hit.
10:39You can see him re-gripping it right there,
10:41and it does slide right out of his hands.
10:43He didn't have that grip right away,
10:45trying to adjust the ball.
10:46Roman Pfeiffer to recover.
10:53No score.
10:546.39 to go first quarter of play.
10:56We get our first turnover of the game.
10:58John Kitna fumbling.
11:00Drew Bledsoe taking over.
11:01That ball tipped at the line of scrimmage.
11:03Looks like Vaughn Booker got a hand on us.
11:09And let's look at that last play.
11:09Watch the second step here.
11:11Watch John Kitna rotate the ball all the way around,
11:14right there, all the way around,
11:16trying to find the laces.
11:17It's humid.
11:18It's sweaty out there.
11:19His sweat's coming down his wrist,
11:21and you see him trying to re-grip,
11:22and the ball slides right out of his hands.
11:24Usually, you just rotate on the axis.
11:26You don't turn it that way.
11:28Second down 10.
11:30Edwards, Antoine Smith in the backfield for Bledsoe.
11:32Second man through is Antoine Smith trying to get outside.
11:36Lowers his shoulder,
11:38and Antoine Smith goes out at the 33-yard line.
11:42Meanwhile, let's take a look at the Bengals' defense.
11:45Up front, they're getting more and more aggressive.
11:48Vaughn Booker, Oliver Gibson, the former Steeler,
11:50Tony Williams playing with a broken finger,
11:52and Renard Wilson.
11:54The linebackers all in their fourth year,
11:56all very quick.
11:57Foley, Simmons, and Takeo Spikes.
11:59And in the secondary,
12:00where they are a little vulnerable,
12:02Heath, Hawkins, the corners,
12:04Hall, Carter, the safeties,
12:06Mark Duffner,
12:07former head coach of the University of Maryland,
12:09and Holy Cross is the defensive coordinator.
12:13Third down and eight from the 34.
12:14Bledsoe rolling out of the pocket.
12:16Bledsoe with room,
12:18looking for the first down,
12:19dives,
12:20and let's see,
12:21was his knee on the ground?
12:24You know what, Gus?
12:25That is exactly right.
12:26His knee wasn't on the ground.
12:27You're going to see his body land and bounce off and go forward,
12:31and they're going to give him the mark,
12:33and I think he's going to get the first down.
12:34Well, he should get as far as he could go
12:36until something other than his hand touches the ground.
12:39Hand or feet, obviously.
12:41Now, look at him get airborne,
12:42and he bounces and rolls back over and gets the first down.
12:45That's some savvy.
12:46This is actually good officiating.
12:50We haven't talked about it yet,
12:50but the officials here are replacement officials,
12:52and they've got that one right on the line.
12:54Eight-yard gain.
12:56First down for the Patriots from their own 42.
13:05And a whistle.
13:06Trick play.
13:07Dick LeBeau is my defensive coordinator for eight years.
13:17A terrific coach, motivator.
13:20Players love him.
13:20Of course, he played in Detroit for years.
13:22He knows how the players feel.
13:25And you think he was on the button, coach?
13:26You think he's challenging that spot?
13:28He may be.
13:30And what he's going to do,
13:32he's going to ask the official some questions
13:34to find out if it's worth it.
13:35You know, you don't want to waste your time out.
13:36And, well, especially with the new officials,
13:38you want to let them know
13:38that they're not going to just get away with every call.
13:40You've got to at least stay on top of them
13:42and work the officials.
13:43Now, the veteran referees wouldn't fall for that trick.
13:46They've all been around.
13:47And, guys, talk about the officiating situation
13:49and give us your opinions.
13:52Well, one thing they're calling fewer penalties.
13:54I think that's actually good for the game.
13:56Let them play a little bit.
13:58These officials, though,
13:59many of whom are going to be NFL officials
14:01or would be NFL officials in the future anyway.
14:03So these are not guys just off the street.
14:05Their arena football league,
14:07European football league, major college.
14:09They've been out there a lot
14:10with some good football players.
14:16Your referee today, John Smith,
14:18from Virginia State.
14:19I pray was questions.
14:22And another look.
14:23Let's go diving ahead.
14:24Let's go diving.
