Tasmanian CWA branch makes effort to welcome new migrants

For decades, the Country Women's Association has championed social advocacy and community. But, not all women have felt welcomed to join the CWA.  A recently re-formed branch in greater Hobart is making an effort to attract culturally diverse women and new migrants as members.

00:01In Hobart's northern suburbs, this group of women are cooking up change.

00:12For more than a century, the Country Women's Association has operated across Australia,

00:18advocating for social issues and well-recognised for their baked goods.

00:23Well, we don't need Jamie Oliver.

00:26That's what people now think, you know, that older women scones and jam and cream, and I can't make scones.

00:33But here in Glenorchy, this newly reformed branch is changing the recipe,

00:38striving to ensure all women, including migrants and recent arrivals, feel included.

00:44Look, I'll be honest, I shopped at CWA. I loved their food.

00:47I thought their catering was amazing, and never for the day in my life

00:51that I think I would be actually involved in it.

00:54Our society is changing, our community is changing.

00:57So it seems logical that we should start a branch

00:59and that we should particularly focus on welcoming people from diverse backgrounds, I think.

01:04It's only early days, but membership is growing.

01:08They'll be building a new foundation for diverse and multicultural people.

01:15Glenorchy is one of Tasmania's most multicultural municipalities,

01:19with nearly 11,000 of its 50,000 residents born overseas,

01:23and just under 20% of residents speaking a language other than English at home.

01:28Tasmania's Multicultural Council says embracing that diversity is important for any community group.

01:35I think we can really learn from all these amazing women

01:40and the things that they can offer to the CWA.
