The ceremonial opening of Parliament was not just a talking point here in T&T, it was a regional event, attended by Caricom Chair, Barbados' PM Mia Amor Mottley.
Transcript
00:00Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley is in TNT for a bilateral meeting with Prime
00:06Minister Kamala Pesant-Besasa, a friend and trusted colleague.
00:11Motley tells us she accepted the invitation to also witness the ceremonial opening of
00:16the first session of the 13th Parliament.
00:19We have a history.
00:21When I was sworn and I said it, she came and then subsequently she won her election, then
00:26I'm back again and she told me she'll be facing the same kind of route so she will be going
00:33back for her election.
00:34I was very happy to see her.
00:36We are not just political friends, as I said, legally we did a lot of legal work together.
00:43We caught up with a Caribbean trailblazer who shared her thoughts on the President's speech.
00:47I thought it was very good.
00:49I thought that she addressed some critical issues and for us in the Caribbean, the issue
00:55of AI is going to continue to be a major, major issue going forward.
00:59And how we strike the balance between regulation and allowing it to flourish is going to be
01:08critical on the other issues with respect to ensuring that we can make lives easier for
01:15the families with persons who have to take care of people with Alzheimer's.
01:20That is also critical, ensuring that we do a better deal for the disabled persons.
01:27In my own country, we have just, we had a commission on persons with disabilities and it recommended
01:34a range of actions.
01:35We just passed legislation.
01:37On the topic of female leaders at the head of the political front, Motley says it serves
01:44as an inspiration.
01:45A good thing for the young girls to see that they can aspire to all offices, whether political,
01:51whether within the context of other areas of endeavor.
01:56It's an empowering experience for them to see that it is possible.
02:00Both she and Pesad Besasa met briefly and it is expected their discussions will progress
02:07in the coming days.
