Clerk of the Isle of Man TT Course Gary Thompson explains the year-round work that comes with running the famous event
Transcript
00:00Well, the preparation started literally a week after TT 2024. So for myself, John Barton and
00:06Lizzie Kinvey, the two deputy clerks of the course, for us it's an absolute full-time,
00:10all-year-round full-time job. And obviously we have to update the risk assessment,
00:18update the event safety plan. Obviously John liaises very closely with the DOI in terms of
00:23course preparation, any resurfacing work that needs to be done. Lizzie is constantly liaising
00:29with the landowners. Then we've got all the various manuals and documentation to prepare.
00:36And then nearer the event we get, we've got the officials' briefings. And as we come on
00:40to the event, we've now got all the rider briefings and the signing on process.
00:44So people might be mistaken for thinking it's just two weeks that you guys are busy. Clearly
00:48it's the rest of the year as well. Yeah, I mean it's quite funny really because in my local
00:52pub, I live in Lincolnshire, Spalding in Lincolnshire. And in my local pub, quite often I'm asked
00:58by some of them, you know, what do we do for the rest of the year? You know, they just think
01:01it's a two-week job. But clearly it's all year. Obviously we do the TT, then we've obviously
01:07got the Max Grand Prix, the Classic TT. But a lot of what we do for the TT carries over
01:11into the Max Grand Prix, Classic TT anyway.
