The Adult Literacy Tutors Association has launched its online student hub making it available to people aged nine and over, it's a collaboration between the Digicel Foundation and Shell Trinidad and Tobago.
00:00For the last 25 years, ALTA has successfully worked to improve literacy throughout Trinidad and Tobago with free adult community classes.
00:09And with the launch of the Student Hub, it will be granted to persons of all ages.
00:14ALTA received an epic grant of $149,000 to upgrade its training room for adult literacy students, volunteer tutors, and was able to add an ICT center for use.
00:26The interactive program will focus on reading and spelling instructions built around Caribbean life skills content.
00:33Speaking at the launch, its founder Paula Lucy Smith said by enhancing the learning environment,
00:39she hopes that the program offered can help break the cycle of low literacy among adults in TNT.
00:45We hope from July, when the Standard 5 students are no longer using it every day,
00:53we hope we are going to see adults from the community.
00:58And we will be open from 10 to 3.30.
01:02For now, we have limited due to our staff, but we hope that the hub is going to expand its hours.
01:08And to expand hours, we've got to get the interest from the community.
01:12So we're relying on that to make sure that these computers are never idle.
01:15So this room, as you can hear from what I've said, is the engine of ALTA, right?
01:26This is where we make literacy happen, not just in Belmont, but the whole country.
01:31Simone David, finance manager at Shell Trinidad and Tobago, says literacy is not just a skill,
01:37but it's a lifeline that empowers people to live a more independent life.
01:41Adding ALTA, Shell and the DigiCell Foundation's goal is to help build a more literate society.
01:48By providing a dedicated modern space for learning, this project helps to ensure that adults,
01:54many of whom may have carried the burden of illiteracy quietly,
01:59finally have a safe space and a respectful space to learn, grow and reclaim their confidence.
02:05It's not just about a room. It's about hope, dignity and opportunity.
02:12Board director at the DigiCell Foundation told the media that the foundation continues to fund
02:17core training programs similar to ALTA and has spent over $8.6 million into communities throughout the country.
02:24Our investment in these extraordinary projects has been impacting communities from as far as Brasso Seco
02:32to Moruga in Trinidad and from Canaan to Charlotteville in Tobago.
