This year’s event aligns once again with the long-standing Bristol Jazz Festival, anchored by the iconic Old Duke Jazz Festival – now in its fifty-eighth year. That legacy is a huge part of what makes this weekend so special, drawing thousands to the Old City for live performances by some of the UK’s top jazz artists.
00:00A nice activity for families to do as well because we have a family zone with lots of free activities and workshops.
00:08So that's just something we all really enjoy organising because it brings so much joy to people.
00:15In the city of Bristol, there is always something exciting coming up.
00:18This August bank holiday, Bristol's historic Old City will once again be filled with sounds of music, culture and community.
00:27On Saturday, the 23rd of August, Old City Sounds returns for its third year, a free one day music festival set against the backdrop of some of the city's oldest and most atmospheric streets.
00:42Organised by Bristol's city centre bid, this event showcases everything from jazz and funk to electronic and acoustic.
00:50It's called Old City Sounds, which is a free one day family friendly music festival that is taking place on the August bank holiday on the Saturday, the 23rd of August.
01:02This year's event aligns once again with the long standing Bristol Jazz Festival, anchored by the iconic Old Duke Jazz Festival.
01:11Now in its 58th year, that legacy is a huge part of what makes this weekend so special, drawing thousands to the Old City for live performances by some of the UK's top jazz artists.
01:24The Old Duke, just behind me, they organise a yearly jazz fest on the August bank holiday and we felt together with both festivals, we would really bring the Old City to life and just lots of music for people to enjoy.
01:42The numbers speak for themselves.
01:44In previous years, the Old City Sounds has brought more than 10,000 people into the heart of Bristol for a day of live music, food and cultural discovery.
01:55Organisers hope to surpass that this year with a bigger line up, more venues and an even more immersive experience.
02:03It's also a major moment for the local economy, boosting footfall for bars, restaurants and independent venues across the Old City.
02:11Bristol as a city, we're creative, aren't we?
02:14We have loads of artists, so why do you think having, you know, the festivals within our summer calendar really is part of Bristol's identity now?
02:26I think because, first of all, we have so many amazing artists and it's great to give those artists a platform to perform and show their skills and their talent,
02:37but also the venues who work incredibly hard in what they do, so it's nice to give them also a platform to welcome visitors into their venues, into their premises.
02:50So, yeah, and we in Bristol, we love the festival, we love a sunny day and something to do, so it's just a great event for the city.
