00:002014 what a season it's been so far with 21 of 38 races in and right from the
00:11beginning these boys have seriously been playing for keeps I remember asking
00:16myself the question should I just run third or should I make this young kid
00:20work for his second place we went side by side for three or four corners which
00:23was pretty epic stuff I thought the happiest person ever comes second you
00:33think I won the race you know it all just happened to the blink of an eye
00:38Jason Bright over and over and up and into the wall
00:42so much it was sort of tumbling for quite a while winning Clipsel this year it was
00:47pretty emotional he was all busted up at Phillip Island he comes back
00:51Courtney gets the win it was a pretty magical moment and a massive release of
00:56a lot of emotion and Lee Holdsworth drives into the history books probably the most
01:04emotional moment and I'll never ever forget it
01:08yeah I put a fair bit of pressure on myself driving for the factory Ford team and
01:12Chas Mostert wins for the first time for Ford Performance Racing that car was just on
01:17buy it but it was fantastic to have a car that comes out straight out of the blocks and be fast
01:23and contend for wins is pretty awesome it's V for Volvo it's V for victory Scott
01:28McLaughlin breaks through and I'm just the lucky driver that's you know be able to
01:32show my talent inside the car like that so I'm very grateful these are the
01:36moments that have defined a championship that is well and truly there for the
01:39taking and the best bit is we're only halfway there
01:43and Mark Winterbottom survives one of the great races great work buddy great motor racing
01:50this weekend we take the fight to the streets of Townsville
01:54when you roll in the whole town's pumped their amps were there a lot of the people in town come
01:59out to the event and it's just a really good buzz around town you know there's nothing better than
02:02being on the start grid and you can hear the crowd over the engine really makes a lift
02:06it's only about a minute 12 minute 13 every lap so we come past the crowd quite often
02:11it's a great little bullring for us and exciting we have supercar racing
02:14welcome to north Queensland for the Castrol Townsville 500 driven by TAFE Queensland
02:20the V8 supercars only on seven
02:24it's been a very rapid turnaround between events and a long journey
02:36we're more than 3 700 kilometers from Darwin today we're in Townsville enjoying that north
02:42Queensland sunshine it's home to about 190 000 people the venue as you can see the parkland
02:48circuit reed park west of the city a combo street and permanent circuit home to the V8 supercar
02:54championship for the sixth occasion hi everybody welcome to our coverage of the Castrol Townsville 500
02:59a beautiful weekend of racing in glorious circumstances coming up very shortly we'll have
03:04qualifying then the shootout and 250 k's of great V8 supercar action on the streets of Townsville
03:11joined by Mark Scaife as always very big day yesterday mate a lot of wild racing and a huge
03:17amount of work last night to be prepared for today as you said Crompo a really wild day of racing a lot
03:23of damage and in the end a lot of implication for the series leaders as a consequence of wing cup
03:28winner bottom and lounge let's have a look at the highlights because race 20 start was as intense
03:35and as wild as we've seen all year so down the inside two hrt cars front row of the grid they
03:41got bumped by lounge push wide then they all ran into each other between turn two and turn three so
03:48lounge into the back of tander tander into the back of courtney they pushed those guys wide he was
03:53penalized for that then there was drama at the next corner because here is courtney into the fence
03:59alongside jason bright which was a big moment in this race because at the next little juncture
04:07that was lounge down the inside of courtney so they made contact this is from above lounge rears
04:13locked sideways into courtney then check this out lounge bumped by davison and into the fence the man
04:22that was second in the championship has been pushed into the wall van gisbergen pushed jason bright
04:28who then pushed garth tander who spun garth tander at the point then of all the damage
04:34lounge comes in and as he goes out of the pit at turn five straight into the wall that's the reaction
04:41from jeremy moore check this out this was a great battle down the pack between jack perkins and todd kelly
04:47jack goes to cover todd says no i'm not he bumps him and fires young jack perkins into the fence
04:55on the right going up to turn three then there was more drama between the mercedes-benz e63 will davison
05:04and scott mclaughlin he dived down the inside of turn 11 he pushed him a little bit wide at turn 12
05:10he fired down the inside of turn 13 he pushed scott a little bit wide off turn 13 and pushed him into
05:17the grass he got a penalty for that but it was just the most hectic drama-filled race we've seen this
05:24year and that was a great win by jamie winkup start of race 21 and check this out caruso and davison
05:31make contact in the pit stops this was a lively moment here also with fabian coltard and garth tander
05:38just down to the pits coltard runs wide that was effectively for the lead of the race check this
05:43reaction out adrian burgess ryan walkenshaw hrt back at the front of the field factory team for holden
05:52and lounge and most had a great battle lounge locked the rear wheels ran wide got down the inside but
05:58young chas held on to finish in front of craig lounge hectic racing some wild stuff and the points
06:06table now looks like this after those two races mark winterbottom lost a bit of ground it's 144 points
06:11the margin we'll talk about penalties later jamie winkup he's up into second spot the strong run in
06:16darwin and the real strong run yesterday lounge is third and only just hanging on now he actually got
06:22penalized so that's different to last night when we went off air then fabian coltard next now there's
06:26a lot of stuff going on in pit lane we have to tidy up lots of stories let's get it started with larko
06:31craig lounge was second in the championship mate you've now dropped back to third and arguably under
06:37in contention for fourth position wasn't a great day yesterday mate a lot of kerfuffle not just you
06:42but up and down the lane what drove it do you think why was it such an agitated agitated day oh i
06:47think just uh the uh the shorter races everyone's now uh you know not focusing on the end result
06:51everyone's thinking it's a sprint a sprint race i think that's uh that's the added if you look at
06:55all the saturday's races where they're more condensed uh shorter races that everyone's uh trying to get
07:00that position everywhere you can and it's uh you know obviously there's a lot of aggro going out
07:04there over the course of that first five laps i only got i didn't get one lap in so um yeah my day
07:08was done so as a result of that mate you're going to line up today you're going to lose two grid spots
07:12you've lost 25 points both with hrt cars how do you approach today differently how do you avoid that
07:17aggravation now ah look just got to go out there and see the best we can we got to qualify um and then
07:22of course here we got two grid spot the penalty so uh you know who knows where we're going to end
07:25up but uh just stay out of trouble like 250 k's around here it's a long day um you know we saw what
07:29happens in 125k races so double that and it's going to be chaos thanks pal good luck our championship
07:37leader mark widderbottom is really under fire as if the pressure of leading the championship isn't
07:41enough he has dramas with the number five car they have been chasing their tails all weekend
07:46in yesterday's two races they qualified 17th and 19th now on both occasions frosty made his way back up
07:53through the field a couple of courageous drives from him but it's not the way to do it and not when you're
07:57the championship leader so the aim today is to try and get this car working and set up the way that
08:03he wants it it is a huge talent challenge for the ford performance racing team but with frosty leading
08:08the championship they can't afford to let that slip through his fingers now chas mostard his teammate
08:13is about the same he's qualified a little bit better yesterday but again not where he wants to be so
08:18that is the challenge for these guys today is to try and get this car humming and once again townsville
08:23has put on another spectacular event and they live up every year to their hashtag townsville shines
08:29with picture perfect weather the addition of the super top really has been a huge success one of the
08:34highlights of the weekend was last night's concert 8 000 v8 supercar fans were treated to australian
08:41music megastars vanessa amorosi and jessica maboy and they put on really a superstar concert but it's
08:48this it's right here fans this is why they love coming to this townsville circuit is because they
08:53can sit up here turn seven hills they've got their picnic blankets they've got their umbrellas they've
08:57got their chairs they are ready for another huge day of racing and i think this is where i'm going to
09:02park up for the rest of today because i've already been offered lunch i've been offered a chair i've been
09:05offered an umbrella and jayden he's been telling me not jokes ready to pass on to mark scave i'm going to
09:10just stay here for the rest of the day guys thanks rihanna it's a family affair we're looking forward to it
09:16and it's the 300th race today for jack daniels racing there we are in the garage car 15 rick
09:21kelly's car jdr started back in 2006. we'll go to the break now with a hot lap from rick with his car
09:28covered in gopro cameras for every single conceivable angle
09:35rick kelly from jack daniels racing here we had the chance to strap on a few gopros and show you a bit
09:40of a lap of townsville so here we go out of the last corner now really focusing on those up shifts
09:45up the long straight heading through the turn one kink really important to get the shifts exactly
09:50right through the turn one kink setting up for breaking into turn two really good passing
09:55opportunity here slowing the car back down to second gear bit of a slippery patch just there at the apex
10:00you got to be careful for nice and gentle on the throttle around the next kink setting yourself up for
10:05turn three quite an awkward corner that we've got here as well back down to second gear just missing
10:09the curb bit of a bump on the exit so very gentle on the throttle now setting ourselves up for turn
10:15five and six my favorite part of the track using plenty of curb nice and gentle in between plenty
10:20of curb again at the apex there and a lot of exit curve a lot of fun that one bit of a change of
10:25direction coming up now a bit of patience really tends to lock a front there nice and gentle on the
10:30throttle again in this one plenty of load on the left rear end you have to be so careful to look after it
10:35in such a long race again another good passing opportunity into the second last corner really
10:40tends to lock rears there nice and gentle on the way in bit of oversteer there as you can see out
10:45to the exit curb really careful with that left rear again so much load on that setting yourself up
10:50again to that last corner here really want to be slow in and fast out make sure you get a really
10:55strong run down that front straight so you can't get attacked into turn one well there you go folks
11:00thanks for joining me on the lap of the townsville circuit thanks to gopro
11:14it's castle hill and it's a beautiful scene here again today fantastic weather clear skies the water
11:21is calm the racetrack's about to be highly agitated by 25 v8 supercars scorching around it looking to try
11:30and create a situation to get into the shootout to grab a pole for this next race let's get
11:35downstairs and catch up with all the latest with larko hey neil you just said highly agitated that
11:40seems to be a real theme this weekend i mean really hard to put our finger on why but just a lot of
11:45aggravation up and down the pit lane between guys i mean there's always healthy rivalry but more so
11:50yesterday this bloke will davidson was involved in plenty coming onto the main straight here had a bit of
11:55an instant there yesterday where he felt that scotty mclaughlin rubbed him up against the wall
11:59that's arguably maybe he didn't but certainly coming out of there he pushed scotty mclaughlin
12:04out onto the grass and he's copped a good old whack of a penalty for that and then further into the
12:08race we've got a pit stop happening here where will came out and banged into michael caruso took him
12:13out of the race and there were some fighting words after that believe me i tried to have a chat with
12:17mick caruso last night wasn't interested these guys have been i think having a bit of an online exchange
12:22so i think today there's still going to be some fighting words out there on the track and back
12:26here in the lane hey larko this little stash between jack perkins and todd kelly isn't over
12:31either todd kelly hasn't spoken a word since he threw the pen down after he signed the form
12:37in the investigation officer's office now big damage here this car hit the wall at 140 kilometers an
12:43hour yesterday i was just speaking to the team inside fifty thousand dollars worth of damage they've got
12:48it straight and jack rolls out but todd is not done with this this goes back to an incident at
12:53the start of the year uh todd sent jack a note apparently and said welcome back to racing great
12:59to have you here look forward to rubbing panels with you out on the track to which jack replied todd
13:04i won't be seeing you out there mate i'll be further up the track well that didn't sit well with
13:08todd he hasn't forgotten it and he's not done with jack perkins after yesterday either
13:12mark larkham and mark beretta reporting from the pit lane rihanna crean will be joining them as
13:19well chat naylon and aaron noonan part of the broadcast team together with mark scape and myself
13:24here's our lineup today jamie wincup reigning champion red bull racing australia a win yesterday
13:29for him and for the man in car number two gaffed hand of the holden racing team there is todd kelly
13:34who cops a reckless driving penalty 35 points subtracted from his tally in the championship and four
13:40grid spots regardless of what happens today in qualifying and the shootout lounge also with
13:46penalties two grid spots and 25 points for his role in yesterday's catastrophes will davison on
13:53scotty mclaughlin two grid spots i need a personal secretary to be able to manage the paperwork from the
13:59stewards yesterday our venue as i said at the top of the show is reed park we're just slightly to the
14:05west of the townsville cvd it's an electrifying little racetrack mark it has proven in our six
14:11visits so far to give us some great racing it certainly does neil it turns great racing on 13
14:17turns 2.86 kilometers and a real mix of a street circuit on one end with a parkland permanent style
14:25circuit on the other these are the three sectors we'll be referring to in qualifying now
14:30and sector one is essentially the big heavy brake for turn two and the most difficult sector is the
14:37center in the red there a sector two where it's very complex and you have to drive the wheels off
14:43the car to get a result a little bit of silverware in the holden racing team blake smith in the foreground
14:50ryan walkinshaw to the left adrian burgess controlling operations there anthony mcdonald was in the background
14:56with his headset on it was a good day for the holden racing team cars 2 and 22 on screen there
15:01james courtney state of origin colors with his race suit former world junior and senior
15:08karting champion he's had success on the streets here of townsville he's typically done pretty well
15:12in street circuits and they've been making systematic changes within this team to strengthen
15:17the performance of the cars they've been looking for power they've been looking for handling
15:21meantime up at erevis betty clemenco she's flat out on the phone there at the moment taking a photo
15:27of us taking a photo of her hi betty lee holdsworth car four they had some power steering dramas in
15:33darwin with both those cars but largely competitive yesterday but unfortunately tied up in a bit of
15:38air will davidson it was great to see will so competitive but as you heard the boys detailing earlier
15:45from the minute the light flipped green in race number 20 yesterday everybody had a circuit breaker
15:51moment out they popped eyes rolled back and away they went it was great wasn't it it was great and
15:57typically that happens after long breaks so remember that we've only been on a two-week break between
16:02our previous encounter up in darwin it's a little bit rare for that to happen but i think it's the
16:07catalyst of the street circuit it's the curves it's when you get offline it's dusting and dirty it's the
16:12concrete walls it's 140 kilometer an hour average around this track just a fraction over it and
16:19it's just one of those race tracks that the shape and nature of it various corner combinations encourage
16:24passing which we think is a great thing and when you're encouraged to have a crack things can
16:29occasionally go wrong and they did for some yesterday and i always say that the first corner determines a
16:33lot of that like lounge actions yesterday down the inside he moved from the outside across to the
16:38inside locked the wheel down the inside bang he gave tander a hit to go courtney a hit and then they all
16:44run into each other and it was on oh that was dalgren almost in the fence there at turn three robert
16:50dalgren turned it in right out sideways and part of what you said neil is the layout of this circuit
16:56it is a place you have to try very hard if you put 100 effort in you get a reward and this is the
17:05style of circuit that we wanted to make when this was originally conceived at green park and as i said
17:10this is the permanent end of the track this is the eastern end of the circuit meantime fabian coultard
17:16in the garage at brad jones racing reporting that the engine's cutting out in that car remember
17:20they had a big rebuild yesterday between races here's that replay check it out dalgren up over
17:26the top of the curb and brushes up against that concrete wall car number 34 valvoline racing gary
17:32rogers motorsport for volvo looking kept the brake on all the way through managed to gather it up good
17:38save good save heart rate would have popped up a little bit if you had a monitor on that here's mark
17:42winterbottom sixth in the order at the moment and uh retrieve a reasonable outcome from a difficult
17:48situation qualified poorly for both sessions yesterday but has maintained his championship
17:54league that's important well he qualified 17th and 19th respectively which is for mark winterbottom who
18:00was the benchmark qualify here he had three pole positions coming into the weekend
18:04so very unusual for him to be back that far his race pace was very good and in championship world the
18:10story of the weekend is essentially him being able to get out of jail from poor qualifying yesterday
18:16we're looking at car number 16 on screen at the moment scott pyre he's inside the top 10 for
18:20wilson security and dick johnson great performance from young scotty remember the key to this session
18:28is working to be in that top 10 they want to get to the shootout armor all qualified scott
18:32louds on top at the moment
18:42we're back on the streets of townsville reed park we're watching qualifying shootout is to come welcome
18:47back to our coverage of the castrol townsville 500 it's a beautiful day here in north queensland
18:53we're in the dry tropics this weekend it's been a fantastic weekend with racing and all of the
18:58the peripheral activities in the city so far in this past week nick perkett is the fastest man at
19:02the moment we're watching scottie mclaughlin he's got green boxes against his name he's out of the
19:08last corner here tim slade is currently the reference he's the fastest man nick perkett will
19:13davison and now mclaughlin in the 13s one minute 13.9 for the volvo driver it's a lot slower than i
19:19thought neil at 12 8 yesterday was the fastest time that we saw which was james courtney for race 20
19:25and a 13.9 just over a second slower than that at this point we you would think with the rubber that
19:31went down yesterday similar conditions to yesterday in terms of ambient and track temperatures this is
19:37james courtney now the man i just made reference to with a 12 8 he did a great job he was the only
19:42guy in the 12s it's a little bit slower crumper than i thought it's a bit hard to explain and there's
19:48almost no wind out there at the moment obviously the place is bathed in sunshine so a lot of uv
19:53ultraviolet on the road but there was yesterday as well we're back on board here with james courtney
19:59and yes they are different color overalls holding celebrating their state of origin connection
20:04garth's wearing the queensland colors james is a new south welshman even though he lives on the gold
20:08coast these days and he's currently p1 one minute 13.7 here is mark winterbottom now his story of
20:15qualifying so far this weekend has all been about a struggle because he's down in 18 and look at it
20:21the body language of the car it's he's having to force it everywhere he's leaping over curbs
20:26meantime robert dalgren comes in to bit lane and uh robert at the moment is inside the 10. keep making
20:33the point that aim of the exercise here is to get through to the shootout here's van gisbergen did a
20:39great job again yesterday car was a little unbalanced in the first of the two races but he continues to
20:45build very solid points in this championship assault jeff slater his engineer on the radio
20:49mark winterbottom now 19th and we saw that vision of turn three he couldn't get the car turned it's
20:58got nowhere near enough front bike meaning front grip and on the entry into these corners you've got
21:03to have real accuracy street circuits are such that you've got to make the car turn and be really agile
21:10this man yesterday was just like that he's going on with it here into the last corner two green boxes
21:15so he's building on that last lap 1137 was his previous best he's in the final sector now
21:21up to the control line and missed out by 2100 so he was quicker through the
21:26still it down still it down hit this lap currently p1 currently p1 he's engineer rob star giving him
21:34the advice that he needs he's p1 at the moment his margin though is not safe it's 0.03 of a second
21:39his craig allowance what a day yesterday i mean he was involved in everything i think the only thing
21:45that he wasn't involved with was a traffic accident on the way home he's involved in all the trouble
21:49down at turn one he was involved in trouble at turn five he was involved in trouble with courtney
21:55there at that corner you're pointing frantically i'm looking all around the room yeah there
22:01turn 11 and 12. so uh it was a bad day at the office for craig and it follows on from a frustration for
22:08him in the final race in darwin as well and he's under threat from coultard's gone to the top though
22:14so he's rebounding brilliantly here there's his engineering group 13.6 for lounges
22:18wasn't quite there but uh better um yeah just a little nervous
22:25confirming that lounges is the one with the tiny margin now it's 0.02 of a second it's red bull over
22:29the top of the holden racing team we don't want to overdo it in case the rubber's coming down
22:35and the track's cleaning up which we sort of expect um so yeah it's a bit of a bit of a tough
22:41one for me i think it's it's you getting a good lap dealing with the conditions yeah i think there's
22:46a lot in that mark dutton team manager in the window talking to jamie wincup on the left side
22:53there is his engineer dave couchie everybody in the lane is puzzled at the moment by a lack of track
22:58grip pole yesterday in the first race courtney did a 12.8 in the second race it was cool tart he did a 13.0
23:05the benchmark time at the moment is lounges on a 13.6 and it's a similar time of day so they're
23:11currently just weighing up their options to try and find a way of better balancing the cars and
23:16connecting to the road larko well what a great bit of advice we just heard from dutto from any young
23:21aspiring race driver don't worry too much about it focus on what you can do about it now i spoke to
23:26jerry more jerry more craig lounge's engineer he can't put his finger on it either they think maybe
23:31there was utes on here just before us a lot of cars a lot of a lot of rubbish went down on the
23:35track there was a lot of debris maybe that's part of it but no one has the exact answer everyone's on
23:40a new set of tires and really interestingly i noticed these triple eight guys remember they
23:43sacrificed a set of new tires yesterday and still have those up their sleeve well done
23:49good job larko that's a real insight into the intensity and the interaction that the engineers have
23:56with the driver and when the conditions aren't as good and everyone's a little mystified by what
24:01that grip level is the guys have got to guide you but you've also got to go and drive the car to the
24:06conditions and when it's more slippery you have to slow the entry speed and be more diligent on the
24:12throttle application on the way out of the corner so you can hear they're really done was saying you
24:17better do some of that driver stuff jamie because that's actually what it is
24:20yeah you've got to be careful you don't chase a false dawn go after something that isn't there
24:26and there was a telling remark from wind cup which was really it's not really one end or the other
24:31that's an immediate flash for me that it's actually an overall grip issue interesting also that mark
24:36dutton was the one that was guiding the conversation remember that there's been an engineering change
24:41in that bunker dave couchie with a new partnership with jamie wind cup this year just as it is next door
24:47at pepsi max sport performance racing with grant mcpherson working with
24:51mark winterbottom we're watching will davison at the moment he's quick they're all chasing lounge
24:55courtney wind cup has gone the fastest in the first sector van gisbergen and then the man on
25:00screen a moment ago davison holdsworth bright mclaughlin tander we're looking at van gisbergen who
25:05is down in fourth place so we've just got a fraction over a minute now to get into the top 10 shootout
25:13mark winterbottom is 11th they've all gone out on fresh tires every car is out there right now
25:19other than rick kelly oh we've come so close to the fence at turn 10 there was nothing in that then
25:26fastest corner on the track 180 kilometers an hour sideways almost in the fence that shows the
25:33commitment he actually brushed the passenger side mirror and plucked the back cover off it final corner
25:40this is a do or die effort here from wind cup he's fourth at the moment but the sector splits might
25:44jump into the top and he does one minute 13.5 for the reigning champion here's his opposite number
25:51mark winterbottom is 12th that's an improvement but is it enough to get into the 10 they're chasing
25:56an opportunity in the shootout percats in there at the moment two in four so i'll run through quickly
26:01it's wind cup lounge it's a red bull lockout courtney percat van gisbergen then davison holdsworth
26:07mclaughlin coulta and bright this man is a couple of spots out he's trying to get in the game
26:14qualifying was awful yesterday but there's a lot going on on the christmas tree
26:18the lounge is going quickly van gisbergen is going quickly winterbottom's in seventh
26:23and bankers bergen to p2 he might be in now but he's already gone to eighth because his teammates
26:32just knocked him off mostert has gone to seventh winterbottom eighth all these cars are coming by
26:37now tans has jumped up to three winterbottom's now right on the cusp he's tenth lounge is very quick
26:44at the moment here's jason bright on screen car number eight he's down to 14th but he's looking good
26:48but lounge is threatening fastest man to the second sector what does bright deliver it's good enough
26:55gone now watch for lounge mclaughlin's into seventh winterbottom's punched back out to 12th
27:04wind cup's given it away he's gone to the pit lane it's lounge 13-4 he won fantastic there's a recovery
27:14from yesterday wow nice job craig lounge and there's a response after all the difficulties
27:21that we detailed it was a 13-4 in the end it's about half a second slower than yesterday's peak numbers
27:27and it's a red bull racing australia front row of the grid holden one two three four five and six
27:34and then scotty mclaughlin next in the queue in the volvo davison in the aerebus motorsport entry
27:39bright and mostard the best of the ford performance racing cars and there's the list of those that
27:46didn't make it into the 10. pressure stuff watch wink up here when he brushes the mirror up to the wall
27:53i think at that point it already had some damage on it so he's really trying to kill it here it is from
27:57on board take a break we'll have the shoot out later
28:09it's another beautiful day in queensland we're in townsville the dry tropics castro townsville 500
28:16driven by tafe queensland we're celebrating the trades people there are 25 students across seven
28:20areas of this event mechanics hospitality marketing and pr events television commercial many of the
28:26drivers have got tafe backgrounds including the man on screen chas mostard first away now in the
28:32shootout at present it's a red bull racing lockout in terms of them being fastest in qualifying will
28:39that stick and stay big question mark this man's been chasing set up all weekend he's done a better
28:44job than his teammate together with his engineer adam devore to be able to get this car inside the
28:49shootout working the exit now of turn number three and chas is on scrub tires neil so we're using
28:56hard tires all weekend he's chosen not to put green tires on the car used tires which have just got
29:03that mold release taken off them and he felt that that was going to be a more easy way to be able to
29:12establish the grip and this lap he's tried very hard it's actually been quite tidy it may not be in terms of
29:20the outright amount of grip when the other guys run on green tires later quite good enough one minute
29:2513.8 was the time that chas established to be able to get into the shootout first to run another nine to
29:30come final corner pushing hard nice tidy lap still feeling the effects of a cold at the moment chas
29:40mostard and uh he's virtually repeated the time he achieved in qualifying barrett's good job well i'm
29:46just in here with uh mark widderbottom watching chas's performance will it be good enough will it
29:49stick do you think frosty that's a it's a good lap yeah he's done a really good job there so um he said
29:54it was his first one so imagine what's going to happen when he does a few more it's uh it's a good
29:58lap but it cooled down a little so it's a bit hard to tell i guess the lap time because when it cools
30:03down it does go quicker so um i hope he does though i hope he stays there for sure this watching the
30:08shootout from the garage is no fun uh it's been a tough weekend for you you've chased it up all
30:12weekend your qualifying results have been what 17 19 and 12. are you getting there for the race do you
30:17think well yeah it's been tough um there's been a few little things with the car that we're trying
30:21to fix but uh you're only looking for a little bit it's like it's so hard people say why aren't you
30:26doing this why aren't you doing that but um one-tenth could have put me from 12th to fifth so we're
30:30looking i know we need to fix but um we'll keep working and cheer on chas here and hopefully have a
30:35good race all right good luck thanks mate team voc jason bright on screen a lot of flutter in the
30:41front end of that car as jason made the brake approach to turn two he's already undercut
30:45the time achieved by chas mostard they made a little trim to the engine control unit what's called the
30:51map on this car altering the air fuel ratio as they go into this particular session relative to
30:57qualifying now mark winterbottom made reference to it cooling down it's still a beautiful warm day here
31:02what he's talking about is cloud cover there's a bit of scattered cloud over here at the moment
31:06and you can see it evident on the racetrack two green boxes now big margin 0.6 of a second
31:12cloud cover helps performance with these dunlop hard tires these are good conditions at the moment
31:17this is a great lap from jason bright he's been after a podium here our sixth visit to townsville final
31:24corner for him he's also on scrub tires now so that's a very very good lap because i think a green
31:29tire will yield a brand new tire will yield a better lap time 13 1 8 great job jason bright to the top
31:37fabian cooltard clearly disappointing for you not to be in the shootout after a podium yesterday what
31:42went wrong for qualifying for you this morning um not a great deal really um we committed to one
31:47usually one set of tires so we've got a green set of tires uh for the race but uh yeah look a little
31:52bit disappointing obviously brighty did a great lap there you know 31 i think it's going to be a pretty
31:55respectable time for being close to the front of the grid thanks fabs good luck for the race this
32:00afternoon thank you fabian cooltard lockwood racing championship contender with rihanna korean 13-1 for
32:06his teammate jason bryan fastest time we've seen this morning because the quickest time for qualifying
32:12for allowance to get into the shootout to be the best man was a 13-4 so that confirms that's the missing
32:18half second that we talked about in qualifying now we've got will davidson under the pump of it
32:22yesterday in one or two wars but unmistakably got speed grabbed the trophy car number nine he's got
32:29green tires on the left hand side now so on the loaded side of the car he's got fresh tires on the
32:34right side used tires now remember with wherever will does qualify he's got a two grid spot penalty
32:42hanging over his head for the incident with scott mclaughlin from yesterday so if he ends up fastest
32:47he's still going to go back to p3 let's check this first sector for you we thought that jason bright's
32:52first sector was excellent and it was because he's down by two tenths of a second versus jason
32:59but remember the green tire may be better as the lap goes on jason bright was on scrub so the first
33:04sector on a scrub tire there will be a benefit in that look at the wheel work he's trying very hard he
33:11really skated it in on the rear brake then and basically had to apply opposite lock going into
33:16the corner that was a great on-board shot very telling as to how much work's being done here
33:21this is down at the hairpin at turn 11 he's got to get it down he did it again there see the rear
33:25of the thing just stepping out actually delayed him getting on the throttle they're coming out of 11.
33:29this is where there was some trouble between he and craig lowndes yesterday marks detail
33:33the grid penalty regardless of his outcome in this session he's qualified fourth twice so far this year
33:40once in tasmania and yesterday that's a nice job by willie really squeezed for 13.6
33:46good job nice and easy on the way he did a 13.8 in the qualifying session so it's better than that
33:54but again it's a little bit of a punt when you put green tires down one side but certainly it's difficult
33:59for brake stability because when you've got a new tire on one side and a scrub tire down the other side
34:04they don't pull up they tend to tram track and they're not very linear when you first put your foot on
34:09the brake here we go replay of that little step out of the rear of the car we're going to take a
34:15quick break to be back with more of the shootout
34:25it's a volvo on circuit at the moment in the hands of scotty mclaughlin
34:28he's been a pole sitter already this year it's been a tremendous performance for he and the volvo
34:33outfit in 2014 to get into this session he recorded a time of a one minute 13.7 he's down at turn two mark
34:41he's got scrubbed tires he's gone the same way as jason bright and chas mostert put the front tires
34:47through qualifying back on the car so the front tire doesn't do as much work he's only just a little
34:52bit away from the bright first sector so that's a pretty good effort he battled to get it turned into
34:57turn two he's been very aggressive over these curves and it rides that curve there very well uses all the
35:04road great job very very nice car control scott mclaughlin this little complex now eight nine and then
35:14around ten this is 180 kilometers an hour big oversteer and you can see the balance of the car is just
35:20trending towards oversteer the back of the car breaking away that's the way the boys wanted in
35:24qualifying they need a lot of point a lot of stability and accuracy in the front end of the car
35:29last corner coming up now for mclaughlin distinctive sound of the s60 different crankshaft
35:38configuration sounds brilliant and he's gone p2 one minute 13.3 so generally a quicker session and
35:47there is the group inside the gary rogers motorsport bunker and that was richard holway in the center
35:53it's actually matt braid the managing director of volvo australia in the background also
35:59so scotty it's mark scaife have you got me yeah mate that was a very very nice bit of driving
36:07that's p2 but a great big slide off turn six you had your hands full there that was a very very good
36:13lap well done yeah i went to too much over the curb there and uh scared myself a little bit there so
36:19just kept getting to it you know how it is well you look like you had hold of it but it was pretty wild
36:24oh mate i was i was crapping myself well done all the best cheers thanks
36:32so young scott mclaughlin there with a very good lap but not quite good enough to eclipse
36:37jason bright currently in p1 nick percat on screen heavy haulage australia holden commodore car number
36:43triple two this car prepared by walkinshaw racing part of a four car operation including the holden racing
36:49team first year in the main game great job in qualifying yesterday for a front row start
36:54at a snag and a pit stop which put him down the order at the back end of the top ten but anytime
36:59he can be on the front row of the grid at this kind of a racetrack you're going pretty well
37:02he earned his spot into the shootout with like many of the drivers a 113.7 and the tire policy for
37:09them in the walkinshaw performance garages for percat jason jason and garth tander are green rears
37:17so they've got new rear tires but scrubbed fronts i saw great speed from him in new zealand
37:26learning about the intensity of full-time main game v8 supercar championship racing good luck so far
37:34how much curve do you take how wild do you throw the car
37:37that's where we saw win cup out very wide earlier in qualifying this is turn 11 70 kilometers an hour
37:46from an approach speed of 210. working back towards the pit complex now
37:54nick won't be really happy with this it's not pointy enough the reference you made before about
38:00how well it's got to turn at the corner when you put new rear tires on sometimes that changes that balance
38:05so 13.61 for nick perkatt puts him in to third position
38:17well i hope so it's um you know i was pretty happy the lap you know qualifying was struggling a little
38:21bit because we had a throttle problem but um you know i was really happy with the car in the shootout
38:25you know considering we were on sort of roaded tires you sort of don't know what to expect but
38:29you know it did everything right if that was struggling that was pretty good cheers mate
38:32very good lap from jason bright earlier on now we go on board with james courtney we've got a total
38:39of nine cars carrying cameras this weekend james is one of them got it covered from all the angles he's
38:44got to be holding state of origin colors on the overalls new south welshman here we are now lining up
38:51for his run found his way into the shootout with a one minute 13.7 it's a great day yesterday at the
38:58office scored big and follows on the form that they had here last year in townsville
39:05he started the lap earlier he actually got on the pace earlier which i think is a very very smart move
39:11given that he's got green tires on the back we're in the footwell also on board with courtney
39:16you'll see there's much more aggression than we saw yesterday in the races with the way that you can
39:21apply the throttle and also apply the first part of the break a big slide from courtney at turn three uses
39:27every little bit of road over the bump this is a very fast section five and six probably the
39:33favorite for the drivers uses every little bit of road watch this hard brake now heel and toe back
39:39to second gear uses all the curve very nice very accurate second step at the brake pedal in the
39:45mid corner there as well did you notice that mark yes have a little grab there at eight just to stabilize
39:50it exactly it's just running there a little bit too fast so you had to retard the car a little bit
39:54more to get it turned pretty nice lap two pole position so far in 2014 for james including one
40:01yesterday for our first race so there's form on the board is this good enough for an armor all pole
40:07jason bright is the benchmark at the moment he's got a comfortable margin of two tenths of a second
40:12courtney is after him james drops into third spot on the totem pole at the moment at 13.4
40:18is down that's put your feet free at the moment mate feet free uh park bermain when you come in
40:24mate stopping at the scale that means that they want to weigh the car and the car temporarily goes
40:30under the control of v8 supercar while they check its legality rob star on the radio there too much
40:35curb there for james courtney on the entry and a very very big moment on the exit hey james uh to the
40:42boys in the booth what was the lap like um it wasn't that flash it was a bit more work than i wanted
40:48um we only had new tires on the rear so it gripped up a little bit more and pushed it in the front
40:54which then snapped the car a little bit uh good bit of fun mate it's uh got to keep the ball rolling
41:00from yesterday exactly did a great job thanks mate have a good run later today 13.4 for james courtney
41:05currently p3 there's the big slide that we referred to armor all provisional pole at the moment held by
41:11jason bright more to come now it's his teammate garth panda's turn car number two is on screen a
41:22winner yesterday back to full form he was fourth in darwin then he got a second yesterday in race
41:2820 and he won race number 21 he's feeding it gears to stop it down there at turn two he did get it
41:33stopped he had to use a little bit of curve to be able to achieve that that was a very good bit of
41:38breaking very aggressive gust always very good on those big heavy stops and he didn't use as much
41:44curve there as courtney in fact it was a very contained exit but he's still point two down on
41:49bright he's got green rear tires on also so the same policy as i said before for all the walkwood
41:55shore cars tander uses all the road gets it stopped nicely for this entry to seven and eight a little bit
42:02too quick at the left hander ran the car a little bit too wide which makes the next corner too tight
42:08check this next split got 0.2 of a second to find in that second timing intermediates just on the exit
42:14there of turn 10 he's still hunting a pole position in 2014 garth panda he's had 29 career poles
42:23but he said to us on the desk last night he's still learning to understand the new geometry in
42:29these cars they've made big changes at the hold racing team tango drops in position three one minute
42:3513.4 it's tight in that mid group that is nothing it's 4.6 versus 4.9 for courtney this was the
42:43braking that i referred to very heavy stop and he ended up as neil said feeding it gears which what that
42:50does is it it makes you use the engine to retard the car and that's where it's a little bit too
42:55fast at the left thread a little bit too far to the right which then makes the next corner too tight
43:01at turn eight adrian burgess the big question here can you boys do it can we what can you do it can
43:07you hang on yeah of course we can good i love the way you think it's a big weekend did it yesterday and
43:11once we should have done it twice so yeah we'll have a crack today good stuff mate cheers mate thanks
43:15adrian burgess team manager the holden racing team next in the queue shane van gisbergen the young
43:19kiwi vip pet foods holding commodore for techno auto sports his time in qualifying was a one minute
43:2613.6 he was on pole for race number three the clips all 500 in adelaide right at the start of the
43:31season he's in the championship hunt he's currently in sixth place and he's very good on street
43:36circuits he certainly is he's always great to watch on these sorts of laps and he's the first one to be
43:41bold enough to go with four green tires so four new tires for van gisbergen this is the hardest
43:48part of the lap when you're on a fresh tire a bit of flutter in the front end of that car just as
43:52we saw with jason brights it's when the under tray bottoms out and the whole front of the car vibrates
43:59now the last time that we had a shootout was for clipsl 500 so the boys are a little bit out of
44:04match practice with this format as well but this guy achieved a pole in that session that i referred to
44:10to in clips at adelaide clips of 500 good direction change escapes half driving in the box here
44:18it looked very good there and that sign of standing on two wheels over the curb is always a great sign
44:26of the grip level that this man's got and he's slightly up he's only up by two one hundredths of a second
44:33effectively and i finished this lap well but on a fresh tire it should be better off than bright
44:39did you hear the patience with the throttle the early application was very gentle there's
44:43a little mistake when he could least afford it for shane van gisberg and drops him into fifth what a
44:55shame you live to find another day that's the pressure brian he knows how lucky he is there because he knew
45:03he was gone johnny webb looking on and that was a very it was a high quality lap it was a little mistake
45:11at the last at the last corner cost him five tenths some of that can be brake pressure application some
45:16of it can be tires over pressuring towards the end of the lap actually there's a little bit of debris on
45:21the tires as well because he picked up a lot of dust and dirt on the exit there's the replay from the
45:25rear catch it catch it catch it i got it i got it johnno knows the deal very easily done but it's
45:32still a nice performance for gizzy he's currently in fifth he's got the best split to the second
45:36sector if that's a consolation prize and now red bull racing australia i don't think they give trophies
45:41for that though jamie wincup car number one and interesting he started his lap a little earlier also
45:50neil he's been bold and he's got four green tires on this car also so i think van gisbergen's tire
45:56choice was the right one he's also got six pole positions to his credit in 2014 he's been the master
46:03you've seen glimpsing the shift lights then looking for supreme accuracy as he slots that sequential
46:09gearbox gear to gear doesn't want to touch the rev limiter pulls it up nice and straight a little bit
46:16of rear brake locking right at the point of turning as the rear wheels unweighted third gear a brief
46:24fourth gear slot into the right hander at three didn't quite turn didn't quite turn there coppo
46:31when he first turned the wheel it didn't have enough accuracy for him it ran wide
46:36that'll get better as the lap goes on remember if he gets a pole position he knocks off the
46:41record that he's equal with peter brock he's sitting at the moment on career pole 57 the same
46:46as the late peter brock if he can grab this one comes the all-time guy in terms of pole position
46:52achievement and he's got a green box in the middle sector he's having a big go those tires have come
46:57on better in the mid part of the lap he's looking very strong on exit a little bit of exit oversteer
47:02as he tries to pick up the throttle percentage there's that tricky gear shift right at the peak load this is
47:07is where van gisbergen got cranked sideways under brakes he's gone he missed the apex but he's kept
47:11the momentum can win cup put this together he grabbed the race win yesterday where does he drop in
47:19second that is unbelievable
47:27did you see the reaction from win cup he was angry with himself about that last corner
47:31so both van gisbergen and win cup have made a mistake at the last corner which has cost them
47:38pole position win cup was definitely going to be there he did a really good job at turn 11 and 12 and
47:44got it stopped but it had too much understeer he ran into the corner this is the corner we're talking
47:48about turn 13 he ran in there a little bit of the same thing locked the rear brakes couldn't turn it
47:54ran him too fast was a car width too wide then too wide on the exit and can't get his foot on the
48:02throttle too much wheel spin but the telling shot for me as we had the boxes up was jamie dropping his
48:08head chastising himself why did i do that but this is the edge that the boys serve the measure between
48:16conservatism and aggression is so hard to get right
48:19so tight 13-1 for jason bright 13-1 for jamie win cup we're now looking at craig lounge remember
48:26the fastest man in qualifying one minute 13.4 was the lap time achieved tricky day in the office
48:32yesterday and remember he's got a two-spot penalty no matter what so whatever happens if he's faster
48:39than bright now it doesn't matter he goes back to three so jason bright has effectively got pole
48:45already lounge gets it stopped nicely uses all the curve he's also got four green tires don't worry
48:52he'll still be trying very hard here because you need to be at the pointy end of this field he's in
48:57championship contention he had a shocking day yesterday he was involved in all the drama
49:03and lounge now has got to get across this section this is the fastest section of the racetrack
49:08he's been over driving it through the weekend gets it stopped this is the part that he's had the
49:13problems with turns seven and eight gets out of there very nicely we'll give you the next split
49:19through turn 10 180 kilometers an hour and he's up slightly on bright remember he's still got a two
49:26grid spot penalty that's why jason bright's laughing he's got a big smile on his face because he knows
49:33at this point he is on pole position last corner here for craig lowndes jason bright top right hand
49:41corner it's a valley of effort by lowndes every position counts there was wheel spin off there
49:46he did go quickest he did go quickest
49:52a bit of relief there for jeremy but it's jason bright who grabs his second pole position of the year
49:58the first one was in new zealand larko yeah well there's a lot a lot of confusion amongst that one
50:02we're all down here scrambling wondering well who gets pole here because craig we need to remind
50:07everyone who's got the two-spot penalty but you weren't that mate i thought that was a really good
50:10lap particularly on scrub tires yeah i was really happy with it you know we um like i said to brett's
50:16you know we we had a uh had a problem in qualifying with the throttle sensor and um so i was really happy
50:21just to even make the 10 but you know car was great and shoot out i'm really happy with the lap so that one
50:25of the first cars out and stand there and watch everyone get close was was pretty uh pretty
50:29difficult but you know man's got the two grid penalty so we get to sit on pole so you have
50:33pole position mate that's all there is about it go and get your prize thank you indeed go and get your
50:37prize from armor all jason bright congratulations wally's story their thrill so lounge the fastest
50:44but he carried the penalty across from yesterday it is the closest margin in championship history and
50:50qualifying five ten thousandths of a second in favor of jason bright there's a benchmark for you
50:57we'll take a break we're back with more from townsville shortly
51:09so it's an armor all pole position for the second time in 2014 for jason bright team boc
51:15tremendous slap on the gas controversial circumstances all the dollars from armor all
51:21go to brad jones racing well done boys
51:27craig land's just been congratulated by roland dane now well done i mean this weekend didn't
51:31start so well you've really fought your way back and recovered everything you can from it
51:34that's tough not being on the front row not being in pole position after earning pole position well
51:39yeah it's probably one of those things that you know you did all your hard work but of course no
51:42you're going to be relegated two spots so the best thing we could do is do the best we could
51:46i think we did that today i think that uh you know through qualifying and then of course the top 10
51:49shootout which is the first time this year we've had that experience i think it's uh you know it's
51:53obviously looking good for the race it's a boost isn't i mean it gets you stepping forward on the
51:56front foot again oh look no doubt about that i think that uh of course you know the car's feeling
52:00really good at the moment but you know we've got 250k race this afternoon so everything will change

54:16championship let's relive one of them now back in adelaide well it come down to 10 laps to go and
54:24uh i was sitting at clean third and i i remember asking myself the question should i just run third
54:29or should i make should i make this young kid work for his second place it was crazy because the whole
54:34time he was right there and i knew after the safety car he was going to be right there to the end
54:39they all go chasing i knew when my car was fast and i knew where you know i could position it to not
54:45let him pass but unfortunately i sort of you know stuffed that up in the last half a lap did a big lunge around
54:50the outside of the hairpin and we went side by side for three or four corners which was uh
54:54which is pretty epic stuff the champion's done the job what a battle i don't know what happened i
55:00honestly i just saw jamie go in a little bit deep i tried to pressure him and then i went out to the
55:05outside where i thought it was a cleaner line to get a better run onto the straight and under all out of
55:10control ran wide at the last corner and he got through
55:15and scott mclaughlin puts one on the champ and volvo into second on taboo
55:20no i was a hundred percent sure he tagged me 100 i would have put my house on it you know
55:25i actually didn't know how much of a big deal it was the fans when i got out of the car
55:28i was probably the happiest person to ever come second you think i've won the race but no one ever
55:32expected volvo and sort of just knocked off the you know the rating champion honestly it was amazing
55:40i'm in control
