00:00Up here in Townsville, it's V8 Supercars Heartland.
00:15Love coming to Townsville, you know, the atmosphere's electric.
00:18Everyone just embraces the event like you wouldn't believe.
00:21The North really love their motorsport.
00:23The fans are definitely the closest they get to feeling and touching the cars anywhere in the calendar.
00:30The fans love it. The drivers love it. It's just a great place to race.
00:35We're in for a great afternoon of motorsport.
00:37These boys play for keeps here.
00:39Oh!
00:40It is as close.
00:43200km is tough, it's gruelling.
00:46Every race here has been, it's just been a dog-eat-dog battle right to the end.
00:51Well, the racing's always tough, it's always fierce. Just finishing is a challenge.
00:55We're now past the halfway mark of the 2013 season and the pressure is building.
01:01And with a championship on the line, it's testing every team and every driver.
01:06Even team-mates.
01:08Nice enough this time, get off!
01:10No!
01:11Hitting me.
01:12Locks the rears and turns him around.
01:14That's stupid.
01:16And the streets of Townsville will only add fuel to the fire.
01:19We'll get in the dark.
01:23So let them fight.
01:25Oh!
01:26Lowndes will get the lead of the race.
01:28That's where Huff will go for the crisscross.
01:30Temperature's rising. That's a big hit.
01:32There's a massive amount of tension out there.
01:34The championship's so close and everyone's looking for that single point.
01:37Anyone can win on their day. Anyone can fail on their day.
01:40It's fierce, competitive, it's cutthroat.
01:42It's what V8 Supercars is about.
01:44Go, go, go, go, go.
01:46He's got him, he's got him.
01:47Oh, that'll be a penalty.
01:48The team-mates actually bump.
01:50Oh, here we go.
01:51It's a little bit of dodging car work.
01:53Van Guesburg and a bug slams out.
01:55They're both at the breaking limit.
01:56Oh!
01:57Contact!
01:58This is big!
01:59Welcome to North Queensland for the superage in Townsville 400.
02:03Everyone's just going to be going flat out from the start.
02:05I can see this being a 200km sprint race.
02:07The V8 Supercars, live from coast to coast, right here on 7.
02:17It is just another day in paradise here in North Queensland.
02:20Townsville is turning it on again for the V8 Supercars.
02:23And the big crowds that rolled in yesterday are coming back for more today.
02:27More sunshine and more fascinating racing.
02:30Hi everyone, I'm Matt White and welcome to Day 2 of the Superage in Townsville 400 on 7 Sport.
02:35Once again, we are live all day right across the country.
02:39And you can't help but enjoy the atmosphere here.
02:42The weather is fantastic.
02:43A little bit cooler in fact today with a nice coastal breeze coming in.
02:47And the paddock is buzzing.
02:48There's a lot to look forward to.
02:49Qualifying coming up in just over 10 minutes time.
02:52We've got a Dunlop Development Series race featuring Casey Stoner and the Carrera Cup of course.
02:57And a whole lot more.
02:58But right now, let's go straight to our experts.
03:00As we say good afternoon to Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton.
03:03Hi Matty.
03:04Hi everybody.
03:05Great to be back in Townsville.
03:06Beautiful sunny day.
03:07Really looking forward to the action resuming this afternoon.
03:09What a great day yesterday for Pepsi Max.
03:11Ford Performance Racing.
03:13Dominant run.
03:14One, two.
03:15Fantastic stuff.
03:16And they continue their form that we saw in Darwin.
03:19Mark Scaife for Red Bull Racing Australia.
03:21This really puts the pressure on.
03:23On a track where these guys have recently been dominant.
03:25Yeah, hi Crompo.
03:26Hi everybody.
03:27That pressure was immediate yesterday.
03:29Because qualifying was a disaster for Red Bull.
03:32Craig Lowndes and Jamie Winkup were 12th and 16th respectively.
03:36And Ford Performance Racing were the class act.
03:38Let's have a look at the highlights.
03:40Because it started very, very well for Will Davison.
03:42Have a look on right of screen.
03:44Perfect start for Will.
03:46Jumped ahead of Shane Van Gisbergen who was on pole.
03:49And then all the drama in the background.
03:50You see Tander down the grass.
03:52Winkup in the middle of the field.
03:54Up in behind him.
03:55And watch as they concertina into turn two.
03:58When they all run into each other.
04:00And all the melee starts.
04:02Watch that.
04:03Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
04:04They run into each other.
04:05Off the road they go.
04:06Holdsworth was probably worst off out of that in the blue Mercedes E63.
04:11This was the battle for the lead.
04:12Van Gisbergen a very bold move at the final corner.
04:15Down the inside of Davison.
04:16Fabian Coulthard.
04:17He was up the inside also.
04:19And Craig Lowndes who started on soft tyres.
04:21The only guy in the field.
04:23Past all these guys.
04:24That was James Courtney.
04:26That was Fabian Coulthard.
04:27All down at turn eleven.
04:29There was one, two, three, four.
04:31Down the inside also.
04:32Of Davison and Van Gisbergen.
04:35So Lowndes was very strong.
04:37This is this fantastic slow-mo of the cars through turn six.
04:40Look at the wheel travel and the body language of the car through there.
04:44Very fast.
04:45And Lowndes was the first one to show his hand and stop.
04:49There was a drama crump over the right hand front wheel.
04:51Didn't really hurt the stop for them.
04:53Didn't hurt their overall pit stop strategy because of the fueling.
04:57But he then went onto the hard tyre and the car was nowhere near competitive enough.
05:02There was a drama in the stop here for Shane Van Gisbergen.
05:06The car was dropped whilst refuelling.
05:07That's illegal.
05:08He got penalised for that.
05:09That was a drive through.
05:10Then his team mate come in.
05:12He decided to leave.
05:13He was instructed to leave.
05:14With the fuel hose hooked in.
05:16He got a $10,000 fine for that $5,000 of that was suspended.
05:21And here's the drive through that you made mention of for Shane Van Gisbergen.
05:25And a big weekend for Russell Engel.
05:26226 event starts, but it went sour for him with a power steering failure.
05:30So remember, Craig Lowndes, an alternate strategy on the hard tyre.
05:34So at the back end of the race, he was vulnerable to those on the soft tyre.
05:37The first to grab him was Will Davison at turn 13.
05:41Did the job easy.
05:42Craig sidestepped him.
05:43Then it was Mark Winterbottom also in the Pepsi Max.
05:46Ford sneaking by as well.
05:47And Fabian Coulthard for Lockwood Racing.
05:50And Brad Jones Racing was able to sneak by for third.
05:52Meantime, Craig was really struggling.
05:54He got out to the high.
05:55One minute sixteens at one point.
05:57He did get home in fourth.
05:58So it was a great recovery.
06:00But a tremendous win.
06:01And win number two for Will Davison 2013.
06:04With the one small blemish.
06:05He clobbered the wall when he was celebrating doing Donuts the maniac.
06:09But it was great for Ford fans.
06:11Great for Will.
06:12And a real relief.
06:13And he's back on the radar.
06:15So the point situation looks like this now.
06:17There's been no real change at the top of the tree.
06:20However, it has tightened up nicely.
06:22It's 135 points between Windcup and Lowndes.
06:26And look further afield to Van Gisbergen.
06:27Do you think the drive through cost him?
06:29And the answer is yes.
06:30He dropped right back into position number seven.
06:33Absolutely Crumpo.
06:34Can't wait to see what unfolds today.
06:35We've got five hours of live coverage on seven or seven mate.
06:39Now yesterday our pit patrollers Mark Larkham and Mark Beretta had a long hot day in their race suits.
06:44But they've had an ice bath and they're all nice and refreshed.
06:46And it's my job to make sure today that they are absolutely hydrated and ready.
06:50So Larko, one for you.
06:51Just chuck one to Brett's.
06:52Thank you, Matthew.
06:53Thank you very much for that mate.
06:54Brett's got one of these.
06:55Oh, beauty Larko.
06:57Thanks very much.
06:58Thanks Matty.
06:59Much appreciated.
07:00That'll keep us going today.
07:01There is a massive crowd here at Townsville today and for good reason too.
07:04This is one of the best viewing spots on the circuit turn seven, eight and nine.
07:09And on here you have a beautiful grassy slope.
07:12So who's come here?
07:13Families.
07:14Lots and lots of them.
07:15Look there.
07:16Lauren's here with her Ford flag.
07:17The kids are here.
07:18There are Holden fans.
07:19There are people everywhere here at the moment.
07:21So it's such an exciting place to be.
07:23And as far as you can see, our fans down that way as well.
07:26They're lined up here.
07:27They know where to come to get the best view of the circuit.
07:29A great night here last night too.
07:31Ian Moss and Hoodoo Gurus played over on the stage straight over there.
07:34Thousands went to that as well.
07:35So this weekend all in all has been enormous, but it all builds towards this afternoon
07:40to our final race that's coming up right here on seven.
07:43It's going to be a great day.
07:44These people are ready.
07:45Look at them.
07:46They are pumped and ready to go.
07:47Guys, like you Larko, all these Ford fans and there are plenty of them here
07:51are very excited about what took place yesterday.
07:53I know you're beside yourself.
07:54Seriously mate, I am.
07:55I just love it when Ford's going well.
07:57And so does this, Blake.
07:58Congratulations.
07:59Well done yesterday.
08:00Mate, we are.
08:01We're rejoicing in this form that your team is showing at the moment.
08:03You must be well pleased.
08:04Oh, I'm very, very pleased.
08:06Very proud of the guys actually.
08:08You know, it's the new car this year hasn't been easy for anyone, but we probably didn't
08:12have the quickest car out the gate, but everyone's evolving.
08:14Everyone's working on the car and it's definitely, it would be long if I said it's not frustrating
08:18at times when you understand a car so good last year and now you've got this whole new
08:22package that is like a new, and you need a new manual for it.
08:26So often you're learning in races and then you have bad races because you've tried something
08:30that didn't work and the main thing is doing your homework, trying to learn from mistakes
08:33and now we're seeing progress and evolution and as I said, it's great to be a part of.
08:37I think it's fantastic.
08:38Lots of talk of Nissan, Merc and Volvo.
08:40It's just great to see Ford back there.
08:41Now, you know I love you like a brother, Will, but you're a dill.
08:44You just said to me, it's a bit embarrassing.
08:47We can see the car's been repaired.
08:48Just talk us through what happened there.
08:50Yeah, I've been absolutely hammered.
08:51Like all my highlight of the race was nearly down last night because of what I did.
08:56Give the boys a bit of extra work, but they forgave me, I think.
09:00I had a chat to them.
09:01They love what you did, mate.
09:02It's fine.
09:03I won't do it again, but I was going for the third rotation.
09:05I couldn't see a thing but a white cloud and I thought, I reckon that wall's creeping up on me.
09:09So, I just eased out of the throttle as I thudded the wall.
09:11So, yeah, not one of my finer moments.
09:14But anyway, great day for FPR 1-2.
09:16So, today's a new day and we'll see if we can back it up.
09:20Absolutely love seeing you up there, mate.
09:21So, good luck today.
09:22Thanks for coming forwards.
09:23Well, he got that right.
09:24The wall was coming up on him.
09:25Well done, Will Davison.
09:26A big day ahead on the list.
09:28Neil Crompton's tour of the paddock.
09:29It's pretty simple.
09:30We give him a camera and a microphone.
09:32He gives you access all areas.
09:34Also, find out what else the teams have been up to when Michael Caruso slots into commentary
09:39for the team's fun run.
09:41They race hard.
09:42They run hard.
09:43We've had some massive moments so far this season.
09:45What have been the highlights?
09:46Well, we're going to get your thoughts throughout the day.
09:49And this was a classic yesterday.
09:51Crumpo and Scaifey had a ball with Russell Ingle.
09:53He didn't see it coming though.
09:55They didn't miss him.
09:56Don't miss it.
09:57And, of course, the main event of today.
09:59Race 21.
10:00The final 200 Ks of the Suprage in Townsville 400.
10:03So, qualifying is coming up in just under four and a half minutes.
10:06As we go to the break, the first of our season so far highlights when Shane Van Giesbergen
10:11started the year with a bang at Klipsal.
10:14The Gies is the Klipsal champion of 2013.
10:18To win the Klipsal 500 is a huge, it's a big deal.
10:23The Holden VF Commodore and Techno Autosports get their first win.
10:27You know, my first win there and Techno's first win altogether.
10:31It's pretty cool to make that our first one.
10:34Reaches for the sky, Shane Van Giesbergen.
10:37To stand up there on top of the car was a pretty cool moment.
10:40Just a fantastic way to start the season.
10:43Now, hopefully we can give Bathurst a chance later in the year too.
10:5428 V8 supercars lined up and ready to go in pit lane.
10:59As they take their cue for a 20 minute qualified session.
11:03No top 10 shootout today.
11:05It's so important to start as far up the grid as you can.
11:11Fabian Hultard leads out Mark Winterbottom who leads out Will Davison.
11:16Those three guys were on the podium.
11:18We've passed the halfway mark now of season 2013.
11:21So many wonderful images and memories.
11:24Not wonderful if you're Scott Pye.
11:26He was on the highlights reel though.
11:27As I said earlier, we're going to go through some of these later on
11:30and pick out our highlights.
11:31Why don't you join the conversation on Twitter.
11:33Use that hashtag V8SC and let us know.
11:37We sit down later on and run through some of the hits and misses.
11:41So this is where we are.
11:42This is what we're doing.
11:43Event number 7 out of 14.
11:45Sunny again.
11:47Tropical North Queensland.
11:48The Reid Park Complex.
11:49And it is 2.86 kilometres in total length.
11:53Clockwise is the racing direction.
11:5540 plus percent of the lap is 100% throttle.
11:58It's got an average speed of just over 140 kilometres an hour.
12:00It's very classically and typically a street circuit.
12:03It's very bumpy.
12:04It's hard on brakes.
12:05It's certainly hard across those kerbs.
12:07It's proven to be quite easy on tyres, especially the soft tyre.
12:10They went much further yesterday than we thought.
12:12And because we're now in qualifying mode,
12:14those sectors you can see on screen at the moment become really important.
12:17255 kilometres an hour on the front straight.
12:20It's got a little kink in it at Turn 1.
12:22You can see there's a fairly blustery easterly wind blowing today.
12:26More so than yesterday.
12:27That gives them the tailwind effect on the run down the main straight area
12:31and into the braking area.
12:32That could catch them out the first time on the brakes down here at Turn 2.
12:36And right on cue, Jamie Winkup arrives down there with the rear brakes locked.
12:40And I don't think you can blame the wind for that.
12:42There's been a big problem all weekend just trying to get the cars matched to the road here.
12:46And these guys yesterday had a terrible struggle with their performance.
12:50They just couldn't get the things working on the hard tyres, Larko.
12:53Yeah, well, I've got the team boss down here, Neil Roland Day.
12:56And I mean, you set the expectation, the bar very high for your own team, Roland.
13:00And good strategy on Lowndes yesterday, but a pass or a fail for your team yesterday?
13:04Oh, it was a big fail really.
13:06I mean, we didn't have a car on the podium first time this year.
13:10And that's a fail.
13:11So, but we screwed up qualifying and paid the price.
13:14Larnsey, we had a good strategy that gave him something back.
13:18And Jamie managed to salvage something, but it just wasn't good enough.
13:22And I'm perplexed as to why you're struggling on the hard tyre roll and yet so good on the soft tyre.
13:26Yeah, I think it's probably a combination of we came here with poor practice tyres and we, you end up fooling yourself on set up wise on Friday.
13:34That's an issue over where you decide your priorities are and your practice tyres where you use the best ones.
13:40So we probably got that wrong, to be honest.
13:42All right, mate, we look forward to a better day today from you.
13:44Thanks.
13:45Well, that was a very honest appraisal from Roland Day because he certainly isn't happy with the way the cars were set up on the hard tyre yesterday.
13:5412th and 16th their qualifying position, which is extraordinary for those two cars to be where they are.
13:59And that explanation of the tyre quality is a very good one.
14:02That would be very much the case for those cars.
14:05What really surprised me, Mark.
14:07In the early phase of the race, Jamie made no ground at all.
14:10He was in 15th and he stayed there.
14:12And the only time we saw him move was when Mark Winterbottom took the early step to come and get a softer tyres.
14:17It was very, very unusual.
14:19However, it's made for a great story in the championship and it's been all good news for these guys in the Blue Oval.
14:24So great day for the Ford fellas.
14:26And isn't it remarkable, this business.
14:28They hit rock bottom on the Saturday in Darwin.
14:30They dusted themselves off.
14:32Everybody beat up on them.
14:33Everyone had an opinion about what was right, wrong or indifferent about their performance.
14:36They came back Sunday, did a mighty job and they've got that momentum.
14:40And it's a business where there's a lot of technology and heaps of science, lots of slide rulers and boffinry.
14:46But sometimes it's just about good old fashioned human emotion and momentum.
14:50And applying yourself to the task.
14:53You know, I thought that bounce back.
14:54You know, you mentioned the Saturday versus the Sunday in Darwin.
14:57That was actually a very important day in establishing them as credible race winners this year.
15:04And as the factory team for Ford, I thought their response yesterday was very, very good.
15:09I mean, they had an unbelievably good run on the soft tyre.
15:13Mark Winterbottom, the number of laps was extraordinary.
15:15None of us thought they were going to make that long.
15:17But it wasn't just that.
15:18They had the best car speed.
15:19They had the best fuel economy and the best tyre life, which gave them a one, two.
15:24So at the moment, everybody's just cycling into the task here.
15:26Here's Russell Ingle.
15:27Very big weekend for him.
15:29It's the milestone of having become the most experienced V8 supercar and Australian touring car championship driver in the history of the business.
15:36More than 500 races, 226 event starts.
15:40Had a bit of fun with him yesterday.
15:41We'll catch some highlights of that a bit later in today's program.
15:44He's a good sport.
15:45Guys, the Techno Autosports guys are employing the same strategy they used in qualifying yesterday.
15:50Jonathan Webb just making his way out for the first time in this session.
15:53Shane Van Gisbergen has just left.
15:55But remember, they had all the dramas in the race yesterday underneath this boom, trying to get their pit stops right.
16:00So that's what they'll be working on today during the races, getting those stops down pat.
16:04And the other one's still in pit lane.
16:06Barrett's is Jason Bright.
16:08We caught an image of him before just waiting to go out.
16:11So it's a 20 minute session.
16:13The reason why our topics are many and varied at the moment is because this first phase of qualifying is a bit kind of, yeah.
16:20So they're just out there either running on wets or using old tyres, getting a bit of a feel for the conditions of the day,
16:26understanding that wind direction, the velocity, and getting themselves played in.
16:31It's a little bit deeper into this session where it starts to get very serious and then there'll be a massive amount of congestion.
16:38Sorry, congestion.
16:39And one of the things that I thought was really interesting yesterday was that Mark Winterbottom in qualifying,
16:43obviously the shootout's a different deal, but in qualifying, Ford Performance Racing decided to pluck him out of all that traffic,
16:49run him a little bit earlier and set a marker which was good enough for him to stay in the top ten.
16:53I wonder how many today will try and go for track space rather than this theoretical notion of the track being brilliant in the last few minutes.
17:01It's a very good point because the industry thinks that the last couple of minutes is key, especially when they're on the soft tyre,
17:08because the soft tyre does rubber the circuit up. Because it's a soft compound tyre, more of the rubber ends up on the surface of the road.
17:15But they're using the hard tyre in qualifying and there will be definitely less effect of the hard tyre and the little gain at the end.
17:23So I would say track position is the crucial element of this session.
17:27Yeah, and Ford fans rejoice because I tell you, it's going to be the hot ticket down here on pit lane when I look along here.
17:32Remember Mark Winterbottom, he sat yesterday. He sacrificed a set of tyres and he's just gone out on a new set.
17:37And I look up the back of his garage, yeah, it's the only other new set I see.
17:40He's got another set in a very good shape.
17:43James Courtney now has gone to the top on a one minute 14.2.
17:47Nobody's got into the 13s as yet. Remember the fastest man in combined qualifying yesterday ended up being Shane Van Gisbergen.
17:56Both Fujitsu cars, you can see on the right hand side of your screen, the marker for Scott McLaughlin.
18:01Well, Alex Premier has joined him out there as well and they're trading faster sector time.
18:06So the scoreboard will start to light up a little more on 14.2.8.
18:11As David Wall buys into the 10 side is Alex Davison. He was in the top 10 shootout yesterday.
18:16Jason Bright we made mention of. Let's see the completion of McLaughlin's lap and it's a 1.14.1.
18:22So look out for Alex Premier too because he's trading green boxes.
18:30So in qualifying prior to the shootout, Van Gisbergen did a 13.5. Winterbottom did a 13.6.
18:36Coulthard did a 13.6. So we're not quite there yet.
18:39But day on day, you'll often get differences in the circuit.
18:44Depends on what traffic speed on the circuit before you run.
18:47Depends on the temperature. Depends on the wind direction.
18:50And always the tyre condition.
18:52Here's Alex Davison.
18:544 Performance Race has been a pretty good weekend all round because these guys have had pace all weekend.
19:00And we've looked this morning at the graphs of the what we call tyre degradation on the hard and the soft tyre for all the boys at Ford Performance Racing.
19:09And gee, they look good. They're impressively flat.
19:11Which means they're not degrading too much as they get older.
19:15So for example, you know, you go through the entire 70 lap run yesterday of race winner Will Davison.
19:22And what you see, other than some traffic interference occasionally, is tremendous consistency.
19:27Chas Mostert. Top 10 finish again yesterday.
19:34He started from 14th.
19:37It's a wonderful effort from the 21 year old.
19:40And he goes into 5th.
19:42I had a chat to Charlie Schwerkholt about Alex Davison yesterday.
19:46And obviously they were happy to be inside the top 10 in qualifying and in racing.
19:51But he just wants more out of Alex in this session.
19:55Garth Tander sporting the State of Origin bonnet.
19:59Queensland colours on the front of car number 2.
20:03He actually went off at the last corner yesterday.
20:06The second last corner.
20:07He would have been on the front row of the grid.
20:09He would have been right in the top 10.
20:11And he ended up way down.
20:13So he needs to make sure that he finishes the lap today.
20:17The car was probably fast enough to have...
20:19Because in the race it was actually a very good performance.
20:22He's qualified better.
20:23The first 13 we see here boys with Mark Winterbottom at the final corner.
20:27So he's down the order at the moment.
20:29He's back 27th.
20:30But this will jump him up.
20:31He gets to the control line and brings it up to 14th.
20:3514.7.
20:36So still we haven't seen the 13th.
20:37Here's his teammate Will Davison.
20:39Race winning yesterday.
20:41David Reynolds was on a quick rise well.
20:43One more if you want it.
20:44One more if you want it.
20:45Lost a stack of time in the second sector.
20:47One 14 flat.
20:48So they're getting closer.
20:49Yeah, Will's just punched the number that's tantalisingly close to the 13th.
20:53Just on the subject of the Holden Racing Team Mark as we see Garth Tander come on.
20:57They've been experimenting with shock absorbers.
20:59There are two gazetted shock absorbers you can use.
21:02There's a 14.16 for Garth.
21:09So conversation there with GT.
21:11Scott Sinclair on the radio to him.
21:13So there's what's described as an Olin shock and a Saks shock damper.
21:17Some people prefer to call them that are used.
21:20The Holden Racing Team have been trying both those this weekend.
21:23Unsuccessfully in the case of the Saks, they've been bending shafts.
21:26So they've had to go back to their earlier configuration.
21:28And I spoke on the grid yesterday to James Courtney about that.
21:31But there is some evidence that they've actually started to get a bit better handle on these new cars now.
21:37They were quicker in Darwin.
21:38James Courtney got a podium.
21:40We saw him get a pole position.
21:42You mentioned that Garth was on target for a pole yesterday and it went wrong in the last couple of corners.
21:47They seem to be getting closer.
21:50This is that typical period in the qualifying session where most of the cars head into pit lane
21:56and make adjustments to go back out and have a final shot.
21:59So Will Davison, 114.
22:01We're looking at a 113, we reckon, to grab pole position here at the Townsville 400.
22:06Welcome back.
22:14Drama's here for Russell Ingle.
22:18You'll see the right hand rear side of this car was bottomed out on his lap.
22:22He's broken a shock and that's been the trouble.
22:24The Holden Racing Team, the Walkinshaw Garage, which of course Russell is operating out of.
22:30So yet more dramas.
22:32And that leaves just two guys out there at this stage.
22:35Alex Premmer and Fabian Cooper have the track all to themselves.
22:39The scenario, Will Davison, 114.0 is the time to beat.
22:43Under six minutes to go in this flat out qualifying session.
22:46And they'll all start to head out soon.
22:48And Neil made reference to it.
22:50That's been the saga for the Walkinshaw prepared cars the whole weekend.
22:54And as it's turned out, Russell Ingle.
22:56And it's probably more prevalent when you are working the car hard as a qualifier.
23:00You use more curb, you run the car over more of the bad things.
23:04And as a race, you tend to contain yourself and drive it a little bit more steady or a little bit more consistently.
23:11Qualifying is the time that these things happen.
23:13And here we are yet again in the pit lane where the whole field is sitting in here.
23:17Obviously everyone wants to wait until the last minute, make the most use of the rubber.
23:19On the left here, Mark Winterbottom.
23:21I said earlier, the benefit he's got.
23:23Well, first of all, everyone's on new rubber.
23:25This is the second set he's going to run on.
23:26Now that's a real advantage as a driver.
23:28He's had a feel of the grip level.
23:30But I'm going to be interested to see if anyone gets out there to get away from the traffic.
23:33We saw the drama.
23:34Now, here in front of me, this is the tyre that's just come off Will Davidson's car.
23:38You wonder why he was so competitive yesterday.
23:40Rich, I don't know if you can get in there and have a look at that.
23:42Look at the face of that tyre.
23:44That is a tyre that is performing.
23:46A beautiful, smooth, even wear pattern across.
23:49Nice, dull finish.
23:50No colour in it.
23:51No dark marks.
23:52No graining or galling where the tyre slides across the surface.
23:55That thing is seriously gripped up.
23:58Yeah, well done, Larco.
23:59Because when they've got that look, that really dark, oily look,
24:02you can tell that the tyre is working well.
24:04And that's the occurrence.
24:05That's the spot.
24:06Matty White picked it earlier in the weekend.
24:08And you can see the spring.
24:09The spring's come out of the car and it's run off.
24:12And you can see the force there.
24:13It's still arrowing in the air.
24:15That's how fast the cars are going and the force required to break that shock absorber in half
24:20and effectively fire the spring off the shock absorber.
24:23Traffic jam getting out of pit lane once again, boys.
24:25Larco, you were spot on.
24:26They've all waited, but they've all decided to go now.
24:28The top end of pit lane is clear.
24:30Every car is out there.
24:31And now the rest of the lane is going as well.
24:34There was only one car out there a moment ago.
24:36Alex Prima and everybody else, 27 off the door in the lane.
24:39It's a joke.
24:40Now it's the other way around.
24:41I'm sorry, I don't get it.
24:43Look at this.
24:44It's pit street.
24:45And the hard tyre is so hard, which was evidenced yesterday by the fact that the soft tyre
24:50worked and the hard tyre was asleep for the entire race, that I just think you've got
24:55to get out there and try and make some elbow room.
24:57The last couple of minutes of the session are not going to make that much of a difference
25:00in a 1410 kilogram car, nor is the weather going to change, nor is there going to be
25:05that much rubber that went down that gives you material gain.
25:08No doubt.
25:09And when you can do it by yourself, the way that you use the tyre numbers.
25:13So what Mark Larkin was saying before, if drivers get more tyres, you go faster because
25:17you just keep on feeling the edge of the tyre grip and you just keep on improving.
25:20Jimmy Richards was the world champion at it.
25:22He used to say to Fred, give me another set of tyres.
25:24I'll go faster again.
25:25That was the way that you operate.
25:27There's that spring.
25:28You probably need to get rid of that.
25:29It's on the exit of turn six.
25:30That's out of the Russell Ingle car.
25:31We saw it flying through the air on that super slow-mo replay.
25:34Here it is again.
25:35Crash.
25:36So to Mark's point, when you're qualifying the car, you're hungrier.
25:39You use more of the track.
25:41You smash the curves.
25:42You're not interested in trying to do an entire session.
25:44Red flag as a result.
25:46So race control spotted what we've just shown you, which is that spring very dangerously
25:50positioned because clearly if you fire that off the road at someone either in the crowd
25:54or in a car, it can be very, very dangerous.
25:56So you know what we've got?
25:57We've got a 28 car shootout.
25:59Yeah, that's exactly.
26:00With 2 minutes and 59 seconds frozen on the clock.
26:02And you can see the configuration of that spring there.
26:05The coil windings in that spring are a different diameter, which means it's got some progressive
26:09style rate where it looks.
26:12It's not linear.
26:13So effectively, it's digressive in the way that it achieves its spring and the rate of
26:18it.
26:19See the bottom of the winding versus the top of the winding.
26:21It's stiffer at the end.
26:24So we're giving the world now a complete dissertation of the set up of the Walkinshaw performance
26:31cars, which I'm sure they're going to love.
26:33But if they had them stay in the car, it would help.
26:37So Will Davison sits on the top of this list.
26:40The Red Bull racing guys, Craig Lowndes 8th, Jamie Wingcup 10th.
26:46So they haven't found any gains today, yet.
26:49This is where pit lane position, garage position is really important.
26:54So that goes to last year's championship finishing positions as a team.
26:58So if you're Red Bull racing, it's not all bad.
27:00However, it's not as simple as just go out the gate and start doing a blinder.
27:04Because what then happens is you catch the tail of the pack.
27:07You know, I wouldn't want to be in the mid pack or later because there's just going
27:11to be cars everywhere.
27:12I think Premo was caught out a little bit then.
27:14He was one of the guys who was trying to go early on this.
27:18I love this steering in the shot of the slow-mo that we bring up at Turn 5 and Turn 6.
27:24The steering technique and the way that the guys work the wheel at that left-hander.
27:28It's just fantastic.
27:29It's a unique curb too, isn't it?
27:31Because if you hook it on the inside, Crumpa and I were talking about this earlier today,
27:34you hook your car on the inside of the curb, it throws it over.
27:38But if you touch, but it lands okay.
27:40But if you touch the outside of the curb, it'll spear you off towards the grass.
27:43Exactly.
27:44Now, Ivan had a chance to crunch the numbers.
27:47If you reckon traffic was a concern before, watch it this time.
27:50But more than ever, there's only one thing that matters here now.
27:53You get to go around the circuit on your outlap and cross the finish line before the checkered flag goes out.
27:59Now, I'd guess you'd have plenty of time to do that right back behind the field.
28:03I don't know what the rush is.
28:05So, just go back to my remarks before about Alex Premer.
28:08He was one of 28.
28:09Totally had the track to himself.
28:11You know where he is at the moment?
28:13Second.
28:14P2.
28:15One minute 14.07.
28:16Exactly.
28:17And with that, he had the second and third fastest middle and last sector.
28:20So, his car speed was good.
28:21He was out by himself.
28:22He's done the best job he could possibly do.
28:24He is 55 ten thousandths of a second away from pole.
28:28So, I mean, he's done a really...
28:30He timed it really well.
28:31He's done a great job.
28:32So, the two days running where the guy that plays Lone Ranger actually gets a yield for his trouble
28:37because Mark Winterbottom did precisely the same thing yesterday.
28:40And even more so today because, as we pointed out, there's now 28 cars out there
28:44and they're only going to have one crack at it all at the same time.
28:51This will be intense.
28:53If you get balked, it's over.
28:56And it's cool heads will prevail.
28:58So, if you fly off the handle in the middle of all this and start shaking your fist and flashing headlights,
29:04it's just, as you say, it's all over.
29:06You're going to have to be very calm in how this is played.
29:08So, remember, it's only a 1.14.
29:11As soon as that clock gets down 30 seconds, you don't get your next lap.
29:15Yeah, exactly right, Scaf.
29:17And I was probably wrong what I said there before because it may be some guys here get two goes at this
29:21and it's the back half of that bitch going to get one.
29:23It would have been smart to go out in the line with all the traffic.
29:25That's right, Larko.
29:26Well, we know that Mark Winterbottom will get two.
29:28Yeah, have a look there, Larko, because you'll see this was a bit ugly.
29:36I didn't think the wing cut was going to get out.
29:38Courtney did a good job then.
29:39I think they just ran into each other, the teammates there.
29:42But Larko will have spotted at the 1.10 marker, basically, they're all the guys who only get one lap.
29:49Yeah, you're dead right, Scaf.
29:51And I'm standing here counting them.
29:52One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
29:55There's going to be a bucket up load of them.
29:57So, there you go.
29:58Right up.
29:59Let's watch the times.
30:00David Reynolds has got a green mark to his name.
30:02He's in position five at the moment.
30:04Fastest man to sector one.
30:06Mark Winterbottom was just a smidgen off at sector one.
30:09Now he's up at sector two by two tenths.
30:11So, he's heading into the 1.13 territory.
30:14This is his first flying lap.
30:15He'll get two cracks at it.
30:17There's a car pulled over on the side here because there's a huge traffic jam.
30:20Craig Lowndes gets out of the way.
30:22There's a stack of cars in front of Winterbottom that shouldn't hamper him as he crosses the control line.
30:28Check out this time.
30:30It should be good enough to leapfrog his teammate.
30:33And he does a 1.13.6.
30:35Good time.
30:3613.5 yesterday.
30:39Stay up until get two.
30:41Here comes Will Davison.
30:43Fastest at the first sector.
30:45Slower in between.
30:46What about the third and final?
30:481.14.3.
30:49Virtually reproduces what Frosty did yesterday.
30:52One pole lap.
30:53One pole lap.
30:55So, we've gone zero.
30:56The chequered flag's out.
30:57There are those that got through.
30:58They'll get another lap.
30:59And those that face the flag are stopped.
31:01Tanda.
31:0213.9.
31:03Good job, Garth Tanda.
31:05Dalberto.
31:06Well done.
31:0714.03.
31:08Up to third.
31:09McLaughlin's just punched the time into P2.
31:13So, it's Winterbott and McLaughlin's on a 13th.
31:167.
31:17Only 0.1 behind.
31:18Here's Alex Davison on screen at the moment.
31:20Yeah, he's only a tenth of a second or thereabouts.
31:24A drift at the second sector.
31:2613th in the field at present.
31:28Lowndes and Winkup.
31:2911th and 12th.
31:30And I don't think Winkup gets another crack at it.
31:34I'm pretty sure he crossed the line just as the flag dropped.
31:37So, it's going to be really close.
31:39Let's see the completion as Fabian Coulthard buys into eighth.
31:42Alex Davison hugs the right-hand side of the circuit and slots into fourth.
31:46Three tenths off.
31:48Here's Craig Lowndes.
31:49Good job.
31:50Good job, Craig Lowndes.
31:51Davey Reynolds.
31:52Backs it up with a 1.39.
31:53Goes into third.
31:54So, Winterbottom's time sitting there at 1.13.6.
32:08Car number one.
32:09Okay, mate.
32:10Good job there.
32:11Peace.
32:12Under investigation, there's Grant McPherson.
32:14And under investigation for an unsafe release.
32:16We saw that on the replay before.
32:17So, Winterbottom, McLaughlin, Reynolds.
32:20Winkup is 15th.
32:22He was 16th yesterday.
32:2414.39.
32:25He's .77 away.
32:28And another pole position for Mark Winterbottom.
32:31As FPR keeps the roll going.
32:33Head pole in Tasmania.
32:36And he will start from position one.
32:40Terrific job.
32:41The Holden Commodore of Scotty McLaughlin will start on the front row of the grid.
32:44Davey Reynolds and Garth Tander row two.
32:46Craig Lowndes and Alex Davison inside the 10 again.
32:49Tony Dalberto.
32:50Excellent effort from the single car team to get inside the 10.
32:54And there we find Jamie Winkup, our championship leader in 15th.
32:58Another long, hard day ahead for Red Bull Racing Australia.
33:03Well, Mark Winterbottom came into this weekend 7th in the championship.
33:10He's already moved up to 5th after a second placing yesterday.
33:14And he's got a chance for maximum points here again today.
33:19Starting from pole position.
33:20The third at this circuit.
33:22Mark Berrettis in pit lane with a little present for Frosty Berrett.
33:25Yeah, Frosty.
33:26First things first.
33:27Congratulations.
33:28$2,500 from Armour.
33:29Well done.
33:30Yeah, thank you.
33:31That was a tricky session.
33:32And, oh, great.
33:33The boys give me a fantastic car.
33:34And I knocked the steering out early on, so I didn't think I had a lot in it.
33:38But, yeah, that's awesome to get pole.
33:39That was a good load.
33:40Now, you've used your tyres wisely over the weekend.
33:41That was a good result in this session for using tyres.
33:42Yeah, it was.
33:43We had a quick car yesterday, so I could keep two sets of new tyres for today.
33:47And, yeah, obviously the first run I had was quite poor.
33:50So, having a second set was vital.
33:51And I did the same time as yesterday.
33:52So, it was the same time as yesterday.
33:53So it was a good set of new tyres.
33:54So, it was a good set for me.
33:55And I did it in the last four years.
33:56You gave me $2,500 from Armour.
33:57Well done.
33:58Yeah, thank you.
33:59That was a tricky session.
34:00And, oh great.
34:01The boys give me a fantastic car.
34:03And I knocked the steering out early on.
34:04So I didn't think I had a lot in it.
34:05quite poor so having a second set was vital and did the same time as yesterday so it was a good
34:10little strategy we did there. Big mid-season bounce back for you guys well done Frosty. Yeah it's a
34:14good one for the team thanks mate. Jamie Winkup I seriously mate I did not think I'd be coming out
34:19here today to have this discussion again with you mate you are struggling on this harder tyre it's
34:23quite clear. Yeah hey similar story to yesterday you know it's just to show how critical setup is
34:29you know we talk about setup and you know I got got one of the best built cars and the best
34:33maintained and mechanical cars out there but we just don't quite have the setup right.
34:38I keep pretty happy in my lat to be honest I was just locking rears and all over the place but
34:42that's all we're good for. Can I say mate I think it shows what a good job that your team does in
34:47yourself for the rest of the year to show you've only got to be a micron out and look where you end
34:50up. Yeah 100% you know we get it we get it right most of the time which is a it's always a grind but
34:55we certainly don't never take it for granted you know that what happened today can happen any round
35:00so anyway we've got a bit more work to do today good luck today mate thank you yeah watch out your
