00:00:47I want to start with Jamie Winkup too.
00:00:49Now you might remember he started 2013 in court.
00:00:53His former sponsor, of course, Monster Energy, a clash with Red Bull, becoming sponsor of
00:00:57Triple Eight.
00:00:58Well, I can tell you that he's finishing the season in court as well.
00:01:01He's suing his former management company in Brisbane District Court.
00:01:04Now that's international quarterback.
00:01:05Four-time champ is seeking $419,000 in damages plus interest and cost as well.
00:01:11So he claims that his ex-management failed to avoid the clash between his personal sponsor
00:01:16and, of course, the team's new sponsor.
00:01:18At the start of the year, he paid a $200,000 settlement to Monster to finish up that situation.
00:01:23So he had a year to go on what was a personal contract there.
00:01:26So international quarterback have filed a counterclaim.
00:01:29They argue that he personally negotiated other sponsorship deals without their involvement
00:01:33and they deny any wrongdoing in the Red Bull-Monster deal.
00:01:36So it's a very difficult backdrop for his championship defense in 2013.
00:01:40Doesn't seem to be affecting him.
00:01:41Some breaking news this weekend.
00:01:42There's a change coming for Ford Performance Racing.
00:01:45Mark Winterbottom's Bathurst-winning race engineer, James Small, is leaving this team
00:01:49at the end of the year.
00:01:50He's leaving to go to NASCAR, to the Sprint Cup.
00:01:52He's got a deal to be an engineer with Richard Childress Racing.
00:01:55That's the team that ran the Great Lake, Dale Earnhardt, one of the most famous names in
00:01:59world motorsport.
00:02:00He leaves on the Tuesday after the City 500.
00:02:03So Mark Winterbottom needs some new personnel to engineer his car in 2014.
00:02:08Now in terms of restarts, lots of conjecture throughout the course of the year.
00:02:12Recently the draft of the operations manual for the category was circulated around.
00:02:16It's still to be approved by the FIA in upcoming weeks.
00:02:19But one standout change is the full-time introduction of the acceleration zone.
00:02:23We've used it this year for the 60-60 Super Sprints.
00:02:25It will be used permanently next year for all restarts after safety cars.
00:02:29So that takes away the headaches that we've had this year with cars leaving before they're
00:02:33supposed to and the like.
00:02:34We saw some issues in Texas with Winkup, Lowndes and Fabian Coulthard.
00:02:38Dunlop Series.
00:02:39Bit of news there too for 2014.
00:02:41Final seven rounds for the race formats change.
00:02:43Two 40-minute races will be held next year.
00:02:46Qualifying session for both races at Adelaide, Townsville, Bathurst and Sydney.
00:02:51Reverse top ten remains for Winton, Barbighello, Queensland Raceway as well.
00:02:56Final round in Sydney in two weeks' time.
00:02:57Dale Wood is the points leader and indeed the favourite to win that crown.

00:03:29Now, a lot of chat this weekend at this particular circuit about the aero effect.
00:03:33You hear the drivers, you hear the commentary team talking about it a lot.
00:03:36Let me explain.
00:03:37First of all, V8 Supercar makes about 150 kilos of downforce at the front and about
00:03:44220 kilos of downforce at the rear.
00:03:48Does that via a wing just here and an underwing under here.
00:03:52That's at about 200 kilometres now.
00:03:54So you might ask how the hell I can understand the wing, the downforce from the wing, opposite
00:03:57to an aeroplane because it's upside down.
00:03:59How does this work?
00:04:00Right.
00:04:01Well, let me firstly show you.
00:04:02Here is a front bar of one of the 888 cars here next door, the Red Bull cars.
00:04:06And you can see that gap under there, kind of like an underwing.
00:04:09So let's have a look back up here on the whiteboard.
00:04:11This is the front bar that I just showed you.
00:04:13When airflow goes in underneath the car here, and of course airflow goes over the top of
00:04:18the car, this little compressed area here accelerates the air under here, right?
00:04:23Then when the air comes out the other side here, it expands.
00:04:26So the concept of that air expanding and accelerating, and the more and faster it expands, the quicker
00:04:31it accelerates and drags it under there, means low pressure.
00:04:34Because the faster you accelerate air, the lower its pressure, and that's what sucks
00:04:38it down.
00:04:39Now, if we go in a little closer, let me just show you a little dynamic that happens here.
00:04:43So here's one race car.
00:04:44When it's out on the racetrack, the airflow kind of looks something like that, flows over
00:04:49the car like that, underneath the car, but at the back of the car we get this disturbance
00:04:53from the undercar and the back of the wing.
00:04:56That's all fine, but when you put another car, the car that's trying to overtake him,
00:05:00and there, right, what happens is this disturbance here hurts the front of the car, so they don't
00:05:05have the ability to turn the car.
00:05:07Now when we transpose that onto the corner coming onto the straight here, big fast corner,
00:05:11they come around here, 200 odd k's an hour, so it's exactly that downforce.
00:05:15What happens then, when you get a car here, and a car here like we did yesterday, there's
00:05:20lounge, there's winter bottom, the airflow off the car goes around like that, it disturbs
00:05:25in the car coming up beside it, so this car loses downforce.
00:05:29That means that car at the front can run wide and possibly tap that, and it may put
00:05:33some sense to what happened yesterday.
00:05:35So as you can see, if you understand, upside down aeroplane wing there, and accelerating
00:05:40air under the front of the car there, you'll sort of get the concept of how this works.

00:06:46His weekend so far has been a little bit up and down.
00:06:49Yeah, look, he's had a tough start to the weekend, but that last race he had, he had
00:06:52really good race pace.
00:06:53He was just stuck a little bit further back in the pack.
00:06:55So James has qualified for this last race the best he has all weekend.
00:06:59So we expect him to be right up there around 10th or so, so that'll be the best for him
00:07:03for the weekend.

00:07:09He's had a good weekend.
00:07:10He's had a tough last race, but he's definitely been the standout, I think, of the Nissan

00:07:38We're reasonably happy.
00:07:39Look, we're a bit mid-pack at the moment.
00:07:40The last race for us was definitely the best.
00:07:42We worked our way from 17th to 13th.
00:07:44Had a little bit of a tough time with setup yesterday, but today the car's a lot better.
00:07:48So look, from the 15 Rocket, we're starting 16th in this race.
00:07:51If we can get near the 10, that would be good for us.
00:07:53Okay.
00:07:54Brother Todd, how's he travelling?
00:07:55Look, he had a good day yesterday qualifying-wise.
00:07:57That qualified the other three of us, and a little bit of a tough time in that race.
00:08:01We went too wide around one, and he came off a little bit second-best there.
00:08:04But again, really good pace, and they've tuned that 7 Rocket up just a little bit more for
00:08:08this one, and we expect Todd to be, I don't know, 10th to 15th as well.

00:43:50him his credit, he's having a red hot crack this end of the year isn't he, better than

00:43:54It's all we can do, we're the ones that are chasing, so we've got to go faster than those
00:43:58guys, and he's got a bit between his teeth, and I think what happened last night and this
00:44:02morning has just wound him up even more, so he's even more determined to win.

00:44:10Now shout out to John Evans also, we saw that wheel come off, and fortunately we've checked
00:44:16with the marshals in that sector, and no one was hurt, no one was hit, and it was a minor
00:44:22bit of damage to a couple of parked cars that were over the right hand side of Lookie Heights,
00:44:27so fortunately no injuries.
00:44:30But you can see where that wheel that got away from Lee Holdsworth's car has managed
00:44:34to clobber this car, Jonathan Webb's, Darrell Lee entry, and they've tried to patch it up,
00:44:39the stone's flicking out at the moment, I think he might have fallen off the road.
00:44:42Guys, you mentioned earlier Craig Lowndes' tyres coming back on, and Jeremy Morey's engineer,
00:44:46that's been part of your strategy for Craig, is to try and be fast at the end of the race.
00:44:50Absolutely, we were a bit on edge last race, so we just tuned it a little bit up for the
00:44:54end of the race, so hopefully we can go green soon enough and we'll have a long stint at
00:44:57the end and Craig should come on strong.

00:45:01The gap between the Gold Coast and here, the boys at Performance Racing, the drive day
00:45:06at the old Lakeside Raceway, they absolutely loved it, it was a place that we used to love
00:45:10going to.
00:45:11Frosty's been to the States since we saw him on the Gold Coast, a couple of the boys went
00:45:14over there as well, Tim Slade, James Moffat, Jack Perkins went over to watch a NASCAR race,
00:45:19and Brad Jones Racing took the opportunity to test but it was wet, didn't help their
00:45:23cause unfortunately.
00:45:24There's the stricken Irwin Tools entry on the way back with that missing left front wheel,
00:45:28The good news is that it's gone and found its way into the back of the car park and
00:45:32cleared all the spectators.
00:45:41And it's not like this is a rest period for the guys, if you put yourself in their shoes
00:45:46right now, when the safety car period is on, you have to organise yourself to be in the
00:45:50best position, not just with the other cars that are around you, but also just making
00:45:54sure, that's why all the work is going on for tyre condition, making sure you don't
00:45:58run over debris on the road, get the front tyre especially up, make sure that when you
00:46:05start this race, that the car is as good, the tyre quality, the brake quality, overall
00:46:10package is as good as it can possibly be, and then get into the technique and the science
00:46:15of making sure that you're as close as you can possibly be to the car in front.
00:46:24By the way, Craig Lowndes teamed up with Lee Kernighan to raise money for bushfire victims
00:46:30as well, Lee's a good mate, we see him from time to time at V8 Supercar races and so those
00:46:35guys are doing their bit to help some people that have been down on their luck in the recent past.
00:46:41So he's got a job to do, Mark Winterbottom with Hurf and Tim Edwards, they know they've
00:46:46got to win the race, they know that they've got to come out of here with a minimal gap
00:46:50in terms of championship points versus Wing Cup and Lowndes.
00:46:55Three of the four contenders for the championship are the top three cars.
00:47:00Don't forget, two weekends time, the Sydney 500, races 35 and 36 around the concrete line
00:47:08streets of Sydney Olympic Park.
00:47:12It's turned out to be a classic grand finale venue.

00:47:39I don't think he's doing it now, he's actually put it back over on the dead pedal on the
00:47:42left side, but he was working it pretty vigorously there before.

00:47:50We're going to do it out of the top three, not necessarily saying that they're the contenders,

00:50:20So there was contact all around.
00:50:22And it was only a matter of time before somebody arrived on the scene with nowhere to go.
00:50:28Garth Tanner managed to lock it up, lock it up, lock it up.
00:50:30But he was never going to miss the rear of car number 12.
00:50:33And then Russell Ingle, the super cheap auto commodore, comes into play.
00:50:39And sees nothing but a T-bone waiting.

00:51:36He's got a little toe.
00:51:38So there's only six laps to complete.
00:51:41Winterbottom dicing left and right, trying to put pressure on Wincup.
00:51:46And Van Gisbergen got a spot back from Coulthard again then on the restart.
00:51:49So that little kiwi battle has continued.
00:51:52Look at this.
00:51:53Well, Tim Edwards made it clear that they've sent Mark Winterbottom out there with the message to win this race.
00:51:59It's all or nothing.
00:52:01They know they can't go to Sydney that far back in the point score.
00:52:05Have a dive.
00:52:07He was close enough then, but Jamie covered.
00:52:09He just ran it around.
00:52:11Turn three and just run it wide.
00:52:13So Lowndes now buys in.
00:52:17Frosty didn't get tucked back into the apex at turn four.
00:52:20And Lowndes wasn't terribly far behind.
00:52:22Jamie just looks like he's got a bit more of a battle on his hands to place his car to at the moment.
00:52:28So the next spot's MG.
00:52:29So this is a little kink before the hay shed.
00:52:32Hay shed.
00:52:34And up over Lukey Highton into MG.
00:52:36Now it'll be interesting here.
00:52:37Wincup has got enough gap that he doesn't have to cover.
00:52:41Now he's run it straight down there to block.
00:52:44So he did that twice now.

00:52:48Clearly indicate that you're not going to leave the door open.
00:52:53So Winterbottom's going to have to force him into making a mistake.
00:52:56And this is a good run at turn 11.

00:53:22So his car is moving around in this restate.
00:53:25Now if it jumps wide like that,
00:53:27he'll be vulnerable down here into turn 4 under brakes.

00:53:35He's not quite close enough at the moment.

00:56:03in a little tour off the road down at turn 1.
00:56:06So Winkum's car settled down on him
00:56:08because he's a chance here
00:56:10of bettering his own fastest lap time.
00:56:14He's done it.
00:56:15In fact, he's done a lap record.

00:56:20But it shows.
00:56:21I mean, that's the intensity.
00:56:23At the end of the day, you've got to be fast.

00:57:23Lowndes, huge amount of curb that he uses there.

00:57:35But this is the spot yesterday
00:57:37that Mark Winterbottom was down the inside of Lowndes.
00:57:39They made contact.
00:57:41At stewards' inquiries,
00:57:43we've had drama attached to the contact that was made.
00:57:48And with a couple of laps to go,
00:57:49Lowndes now will be putting as much pressure
00:57:52as he can possibly exert on Mark Winterbottom.
00:57:56Two fastest guys on that lap were in 4th and 5th placings.
00:57:59And that's Jason Bright and Fabian Coulthard.
00:58:01They were quicker than the leaders.
00:58:03There's Bright, car 8.
00:58:06He's actually within striking distance now of Lowndes, isn't he?
00:58:10So Craig's really got it going in both directions.
00:58:12Not only is he trying to gnaw away on the back of Winterbottom's car,
00:58:16but he cannot afford a slip because Bright's there to pounce.

00:58:52in a couple of weekends at the Sydney 500.

00:59:02He looked like he was going to have a little lunge,
00:59:04and it made Mark Winterbottom change his line in the braking area.

00:59:09he battled to make the turn in for the very tight
00:59:12and slowest corner on the track at MG.

00:59:16I think he's pumped a tyre there or something,
00:59:18because that's very unusual to go off the road at that spot.

01:02:32by those top ten guys especially, world class.
01:02:36It's hard to accurately describe what it's like to go out there on cold tyres
01:02:40and do that at a restart.
01:02:42He marked up and tried to get him back.
01:02:44He doesn't want to overheat the engine either.

01:02:51Don't you think there's a couple of really telling things out of today?
01:02:54The performance by Lowndes in the previous race was a really high quality drive
01:03:00and a 16-point pass that he put on his teammate.
01:03:03At the end of this race, he had to do the fastest lap we've ever had at this place
01:03:08to get away with this win.
01:03:10He had to go and beat them for pace.
01:03:13He had to go and get a gap. It was unbelievable.
01:03:16Those guys smartened their cars up over the weekend, particularly Wincut.
01:03:19Didn't look that flash yesterday, but incrementally gained along the way.
01:03:23At the end of this race, they looked pretty good, didn't they?

01:03:27He drove very well also. It's been a very good performance.

01:11:23And Wincup was on the charge early.
01:11:26He started from fifth.
01:11:28He got a rip-roaring start off the line
01:11:30and translated that into second spot
01:11:33by the time they got to the finish line.
01:11:36Lowndes got ahead of Winterbottom off the start as well.
01:11:40And riding with Frosty as Wincup ahead,
01:11:43gets past his teammate and takes control of the race
01:11:46and from there, would not be headed,
01:11:48but there would be dramas along the way, as always.

01:11:54Dean Fiore, the Dodo Insurance Commodore.
01:11:57At the end of turn one,
01:11:58he managed to take the lead in the race.

01:12:26Did a little bit of damage to some people's cars,
01:12:28but thankfully there's a lot of mechanics around here
01:12:30that can fix it quickly.

01:12:32Boy, that could have ended in danger,
01:12:35but as we said, it rewards the brave, this circuit.
01:12:38And then Chas Boston and Davey Reynolds
01:12:40were tangled up at turn four.
01:12:42Gartander gets there and then Russell Ingle.
01:12:45That was just heartbreaking for 66.
01:12:47And that one's under investigation.
01:12:49They'll look at that later.
01:12:50I think there's a bit more to the story there as well.
01:12:51There's a bit of nose-to-tail action further down the field,
01:12:53so sometimes it's easy to look at the first bloke in the queue,
01:12:56but I think there is more to it.
01:12:59Big moment there for Shane Van Gisbergen and James Moffat.
01:13:01So that's both techno autosports cars off the road at turn one today
01:13:05and surviving to tell the tale.
01:13:06That's rare.
01:13:07Tandit was three wide down there as well.
01:13:09And we went back to pick up Michael Caruso to say,
01:13:11what a great job he's doing inside the tent
01:13:13and the steering failed.
01:13:14But a win for Jamie Winkup, an emphatic performance.
