00:00We're from New Zealand, so...
00:01That's great, man. I know. I love New Zealand. You know that.
00:04I do. I do. Any plans to come back?
00:07Yeah, I'd love to. You know, I want to come back as...
00:10I'd like to film there again and just visit my friends.
00:13I got a lot of friends there. You know, go have some adventures in New Zealand.
00:17Go do some speed flying over there if I can get it.
00:20Do you know, I have to say this to you, I'm 58, but, like, it's a genuine privilege to meet you
00:25because I just respect your work so much for 30 years.
00:28Because, honestly, what you bring to the world and Hollywood, it's...
00:31I don't... I'm not being obsequious. It's just you've bought so much.
00:35So I just wanted to say thank you before we start.
00:37You know, it means a lot to me. It means a lot to me. Thank you very much.
00:40I noticed at the press conference today, Tom, you said something that one thing that's developed in you over the years
00:45is you are now comfortable with being afraid. In fact, you like being afraid when you do these things.
00:51Now, I've always been that way. I have no problem with it.
00:53You know, and I don't... I'm not a person that lives in fear or is afraid to feel nervous or anything like that
01:00or afraid to feel emotions. It's not like I'm finally there. I've always been that way my whole life.
01:05My entire life...
01:07Even as a child?
01:07Even as a child. I'd climb the tallest trees. I, you know, I'd open the windows in the attic
01:14and I'd sneak out of my room when I was two years old and go up on the roof to look at the stars.
01:19And the neighbors would call my family and say, I think there's a child on the roof.
01:23But for me, that was just... I've always been a dreamer and just had a great sense of adventure
01:30and I like that feeling. And it's never stopped me from going for the things that I want to do
01:38or that I feel is important in life.
01:40It's such a joy for me to talk to you. It really is. I could spend two hours.
01:43You'd be bored witless, but I would love it.
01:45I noticed something else you said, Tom, in the press conference today.
01:48You said you and Christopher McQuarrie, after you've made movies together, you have this saying.
01:52You go, we can do better. We can do better.
01:54I know nothing about you, but I sense you have this incredible drive.
01:58Do you ever rest? How do you rest?
02:01No, I don't. I honestly don't. I never have.
02:04I mean, I'm not... I'm someone who's constantly studying, constantly learning.
02:10I'm just very, very interested in life. It's a passion for people, humanity, movies.
02:15I just don't rest.
02:17And lastly, to that... Well, good on you.
02:19And lastly, to that point, you said that you strive always to be competent.
02:25Yes.
02:25You fly jets. You fly helicopters. You race cars. You race motorcycles. You parachute.
02:30I mean, you've done pretty much everything.
02:32So what is your next...
02:33There's always something else.
02:35Well, that's what I was going to say, Tom.
02:36What's your next competency test?
02:37There's always another level. You can always get better. There are no absolutes.
02:42So in all of these things, I'm constantly striving to improve myself and learn new skills.
02:46Like, it's studying movies. It's studying history. It's studying art.
02:50It's studying lenses. It's studying lighting.
02:53You know, it's... The thing about making movies, it's all-encompassing.
02:56And it's really a magical thing to be able to do.
03:02And it's challenging on every single level. And that's what I love.
03:06Amazing. Well, thank you. Clearly, you love your industry after all these years.
03:10You still love making movies.
03:11Not still. More.
03:13Really?
03:14I don't still love it. I love it more.
03:16So what drives you? What drives you to keep... We've got the... You can't get bigger than Tom Cruise.
03:20No, it's my interest in this art form. It's my interest in life and people.
03:26And it's something that I've always set new goals. I always have... There's always another mountain to climb.
03:32There's always something new.
03:34Well...
03:34You never arrive. It's... You're always... You know, I'm always moving forward.
03:39Well, thank you for keeping climbing. It's so lovely to meet you.
03:41It's a pleasure. It's lovely to meet you. Thank you so much.
03:43Thank you so much.
