QLD students compete in World Jump Rope Championships in Japan

What started as a lunchtime jump rope fundraising program at a Bundaberg school has grown into a competitive skipping squad. Now three Queensland pupils have been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming world championships, in Japan.

00:00It requires speed, strength and laser-like focus.

00:06This is not your average schoolyard jump rope.

00:11Unless you've seen it, nobody understands.

00:13James picked up a rope for the first time three years ago

00:16when he arrived in Queensland from South Africa.

00:19I couldn't even skip once and I kept on tripping up

00:23and then suddenly I got one.

00:25The Year 7 student quickly took to the sport

00:28and is now one of three at his Bundaberg school

00:30selected to represent Australia in Japan

00:33at the World Jump Rope Championships in July.

00:36It's quite nerve-wracking considering

00:39that the best in the world are going to be there,

00:42but I think we're going to do well.

00:44I don't know where it comes from

00:46but every single child in that school is just extremely talented.

00:50The St Luke skipping program has been so successful

00:53the school was able to lobby Skipping Australia

00:55to bring the state championships to Bundaberg

00:58the first time the event has been held in a regional area.

01:01Outside of the fierce competition

01:03the sport is encouraging more students to get active

01:06and breeding close friendships.

01:08It's just really an easy activity that you can implement

01:11and have some fun with your kids

01:13and bring a little bit of physical activity back into your life

01:16which is awesome.
