One former Attorney General in a past UNC government adds his voice to the chorus wishing success to newly minted Attorney General - John Jeremie.

While the move has been described as a surprise to some as Jeremie served as AG in past PNM-led governments, former Attorney General Anand Ramlogan says the new Attorney General's "leadership is both necessary and timely."

00:00Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan, who served as Attorney General in Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bosessa's first Cabinet during her first UNC-led government, is congratulating her choice for Attorney General in her second Cabinet, John Jeremy, a senior council who served as Attorney General under past PNM-led governments.
00:21In a statement on Friday, Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan said that, by his definition, Trinidad and Tobago is in crisis mode and Attorney General Jeremy has the knowledge, experience and vision to reform and lead the much-needed transformation of the legal system so that justice can be served.
00:40Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan further said of Attorney General Jeremy, quote,
00:44Public confidence in the administration of justice has been shaken. He must accelerate the changes that are in the process of being implemented in the criminal justice system so that we can take full advantage of the technological developments in the legal field. His leadership is both necessary and timely, end quote.
01:03Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan noted this is Mr. Jeremy's historic and unprecedented third appointment to the Office of Attorney General.
01:12Senior Council Jeremy served as Attorney General from November 10, 2003 to November 7, 2007 and then again from May 29, 2009 to May 25, 2010.
01:24He was appointed Attorney General on both occasions by way of the Senate under the then PNM administrations led by the late former Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
01:32On Thursday, Senior Council Jeremy took the oath of office for the third time after Senior Council Persaud Bissessa was installed as Prime Minister for the second time in her political career.
01:44Among those who expressed their disagreement with Mr. Jeremy's appointment as Attorney General under the new UNC-led government is Dr. Devant Maraj, who served as a minister in the UNC-led People's Partnership Administration.
01:56In a statement on Thursday, Dr. Maraj called Attorney General Jeremy's appointment, quote,
02:02an egregious betrayal of the United National Congress and its fiercely devoted supporters, end quote.
02:09Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan said in his statement on Friday that Attorney General Jeremy is a legal scholar whose diverse portfolio of public service makes him eminently qualified to serve
02:20and that his knowledge about constitutional law and his experience as a diplomat when he served as High Commissioner to the UK stands on an impressive academic career as a Senior Lecturer at the Facility of Law, UWE.
02:34Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan recalled that Mr. Jeremy was his first law lecturer when he pursued his LLB degree at UWE
02:41and described the new Attorney General as a dedicated and competent tutor who first became his mentor.
02:49Senior Councilor Lannan Ramlogan said that over the last decade, Attorney General Jeremy has built a solid reputation as a lawyer
02:55whose intellectual ability and unassuming manner made him a formidable opponent in court
03:01and that those who underestimated him did so at their own peril.
