The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is hosting its 8th Biennial Conference in Trinidad, over the next three days. However Attorney General John Jeremie was notably absent from this morning's Opening Ceremony, as scheduled. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00Over the next two days, legal stakeholders from across the region will hold discussions on the role and function of the Caribbean Court of Justice as the CCJ celebrates its 20th anniversary under the theme, The CCJ at 20, Reflections on Caribbean Jurisprudence.
00:18We will critically discuss in multiple formats development spanning constitutional law and fundamental rights, criminal justice reform, family law, estates and probate, commercial law and Caribbean community law.
00:35We will examine cross-cutting issues, the development of Caribbean jurisprudence.
00:40Notably absent from the opening ceremony was Attorney General John Jeremy, who was scheduled to speak.
00:47When TV6 News inquired of the Attorney General why he was not in attendance, he indicated that he had to be in the Senate and House of Representatives today.
00:58To date, Trinidad and Tobago has not adopted the CCJ as its final court of appeal.
01:04The CCJ's appellate decisions are routinely cited and referenced in cases before domestic courts in nearly all common law Caribbean states, including on some 450 separate occasions by judiciaries in countries which do not yet send their appeals to us.
01:26With respect to the original jurisdiction, which is the international jurisdiction of the court, the CCJ has proven itself to be essential to the operation of the CARICOM single market and economy.
