Inflatable Bowel comes to Portsmouth

Bowel Cancer UK were seen in Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer and the signs and symptoms to look out for.

00:00Hi, I'm Helen Whiteley. I'm the Awareness Programme Manager for Bowel Cancer UK.

00:04Okay, tell me where we are and what we're doing here today.

00:06So we're in Portsmouth this week. Today we're in Guildhall Square and we're here with our Awareness Roadshow

00:12to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, to talk to people about any concerns they might have

00:19and about the screening programme.

00:21And just tell me a little bit about the inflatable behind you.

00:23So the large inflatable bowel is a fabulous walkthrough experience.

00:27It enables us to explain to people how changes can happen in the tissues of the bowel

00:31and if these changes start to happen, what they should go to their GP about.

00:35With that risk being that cancer can develop from polyps, etc.

00:40And visual aid is always brilliant to help people understand about any type of change and about the risk of cancer.

00:46We also discuss other bowel conditions that might be related to bowel cancer as well.

00:50Okay, so those other conditions, can that lead to bowel cancer?

00:53Some of them can. We talk about particularly colitis, diverticulitis and Crohn's disease

00:58and it's a fact that having any of those bowel conditions can increase your risk of getting bowel cancer

01:04and it's important that people that have got those conditions or they've got family members that have them

01:08know that there's that risk and to flag any new symptoms that they might have.

01:13Tell me what the reaction's been like.

01:14The reaction's been fabulous.

01:15People have been very, very willing to talk to us, not too embarrassed to discuss the things that we want to talk about

01:22which is quite often a taboo subject.

01:25People don't like to talk about personal habits and about poo and changes and things like that

01:29but the uptake here in Portsmouth has been fabulous. It's been really fun.

01:33I know it's an obvious question but tell me why it's so important to, obviously,

01:36if you spot any of these signs or symptoms to sort of get the patient.

01:41The key with bowel cancer, like many others, but particularly with bowel cancer, is early diagnosis.

01:46If bowel cancer is diagnosed early at stage one, there's a 90% survival rate.

01:51Nine in ten people will survive it and the treatment is much simpler to get through.

01:56The more that people ignore the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, the more advanced the cancer can get

02:02and it's more difficult to treat and the treatment's harder to get through.

02:04Right, you'll find a better lifestyle.

02:13You can't the doctor, you can't get by one person.
