00:00And one of the ways that we can reduce our risk of bowel cancer is by making sure that we
00:04get plenty of exercise.
00:06And we're talking about 150 minutes of activity every week.
00:11And that can reduce your bowel cancer risk by about 20 percent.
00:15Bowel cancer is known as the fourth most common cancer across the UK.
00:20Risk increases significantly in the older 50s.
00:23Studies have shown that eating too much red or processed meat can lead to an increase of bowel cancer risk.
00:30With 13 out of 100 bowel cancers, around 13 percent in the UK, being linked to eating processed meats.
00:36But there are factors you can consider which actually reduce your risk of the disease.
00:41A recent study has shown that having an extra 300 mg of calcium per day, which is about the amount
00:47in a large glass of milk, is linked to a lower risk of bowel cancer.
00:51Eating lots of fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer.
00:55Further, almost a third of adults in the North East don't know that regular exercise can have an impact in
01:01reducing your risk of developing bowel cancer.
01:04Bowel Cancer UK says that taking part in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week can lower the
01:11risk of bowel cancer by around 20 percent.
01:13Despite this, recent Sport England Active Lives Adult Survey data shows 27.5 percent of adults in the North East
01:22are classed as inactive.
01:24That means they do fewer than 30 minutes of physical activity a week.
01:28With this in mind, we spoke to Bowel Cancer UK to find out how their newest October campaign hopes to
01:34get people moving,
01:35whilst also raising awareness for bowel cancer across the region.
01:38Well, we know there's lots of evidence and research out there that shows that inactivity, not being as physically active,
01:45can really increase your risk of lots of cancers, including bowel cancer.
01:50And by being active for just 150 minutes every week, you can reduce that risk of bowel cancer by 20
01:57percent.
01:57So it does make a difference. And that's why we're encouraging people to walk 60 miles in October.
02:01Bowel Cancer UK is using those figures to launch its Walk 60 Miles in October fundraising campaign.
02:08The campaign encourages people to walk two miles every day throughout October, with the aim of raising funds for the
02:15charity.
02:16Bowel Cancer UK says the money raised will support awareness of bowel cancer and its symptoms,
02:21provide information and support, fund research and campaign for earlier diagnosis and access to treatment and care.
02:28So you can do anything you want. So you can walk, you can you can take your pets for a
02:34walk.
02:34You can make it part of your school run and tag a bit on extra.
02:38All you need to do is making sure you're getting 150 minutes of activity in every week.
02:43So around two miles a day. And to get involved, all you need to do is sign up to our
