Twice as many bikes as cars in City of London after 57% increase in cycle journeys

00:00Cycling in the City of London has seen a massive boom, with bike journeys jumping by 57% in

00:08just two years.

00:10During the day, bikes now outnumber cars by 2 to 1 in the square mile, a dramatic shift

00:16for the capital's financial hub.

00:19The surge is being driven in large part by the explosion in dockless e-bikes like Lime

00:24and Forest, which have become a common sight across central London.

00:29In fact, their usage has skyrocketed by 340% since 2022 and now make up about one in every

00:36six bikes in the city.

00:40According to the City of London's corporation's latest cycle count, a snapshot taken every

00:45two years at 30 busy spots, there were 139,000 bike trips recorded on October 9th last year.

00:53That's a big leap from 88,000 counted back in November of 2022.

00:58Between 7am and 7pm cycling accounted for 39% of all trips in the area, up from 27% two

01:05years earlier, while minicab journeys dipped from 27% to 22% over the same period.

01:13The City's City Streets 2025 report highlighted dockless bikes have really taken off and are

01:18about four times as many as there were in 2022, making up 17% of the bikes seen on the street.

01:26Separate data published by Transport for London last November announced that the number of

01:30journeys made by bikes had increased across the capital by 26% since 2019 and by 5% in the

01:40most recent 12 month period.
