00:00Hey, it's Shanna Renee from the Morning Bounce on 105.1 The Bounce and today I'm at a very, very special place. I am so, so thankful that I found them a couple of months ago. Talk about keep growing Detroit and I'm here with a rosebud and they have a pretty big mission here in Detroit. We are a nonprofit farm here, urban farm. Our mission is to promote food sovereignty through the city of Detroit. And that looks like the majority of produce consumed by Detroiters are grown by Detroiters in Detroit. I absolutely
00:29love it. You guys have a farm here in Eastern Market, which is where we're going to tour today. But you definitely have other resources available for people like the Garden Resource Program. So our Garden Resource Program has been around for 20 years. If you live in the city of Detroit and you want to grow a garden in your backyard or on your deck or in whatever space you have, you can sign up for a program for $15 for a family-sized garden. You get transplants and seeds three times during the season, compost,
00:59lots of, lots of, lots of, lots of, lots of, lots of, lots of, lots of other access to some supplies you might need, a soil test to test your soil, access to all of our education classes and anything else that we do. I love it. So I can't stress enough, like this is an organization that helps people grow here, vegetables and, you know, everything else. And then it's all purchased here too, like at Eastern Market with your garden and all of the funds go back to the farmers here. So I couldn't think of a bigger organization to talk to for the city of Detroit. So we're at the farm here today in Eastern
01:29Market. We're going to take a little tour. Obviously at this point in the season, it's just before spring, but we could take a tour today and show you everything that they grow here. So right now we're in our children's garden. You can see all of our raised beds. We've got, we're surrounded by all of our native perennials. We have our bees around us. And I love the raised beds. They're kids hype. They have a lot of organizations that come through and teach kids about the gardening and stuff. And maybe I need to come volunteer that day because I love to see them learning. Yeah, it's really cute. They'll like come out and
01:59put stuff and then do like a hide and seek. Oh, that's awesome. Scavenger hunt type thing. It's really adorable. We have our herb garden here. We're on a seven field rotation. So each plot gets planted something different. And then every year we rotate them. Our award-winning garlic gets planted in the fall time, harvested in the early summer, all done by volunteers. One of our partners, Tito's, comes out and does a great job helping us with this. So we want to take a peek in this
02:29green house. But we've started pepping the land, getting things ready to plant. We start going to market in April. So we got it up pretty soon. It's coming up. Pretty soon. There'll be lots of things sprouted. I don't think anything's planted yet, but okay. This is our other greenhouse. This is where we do primarily our transplanting. We've got bok choy started. All of these transplants are going to go into the GRP, into the gardening service program. So these will get planted and eaten in the next, within the
02:59season. This is after things come out of the germination chamber, they come to this heated table to just sprout a little bit more. Looks like we have some leaks here. See, you know what you're doing too. Yep. I just absolutely love the garden resource program because so much is provided for so little. And it's just a great opportunity for you to get your family involved, you know, to pass these practices down to your family and for your children. For $15, the amount you get is, you know, it's probably
03:29the best money I'll spend all year. Absolutely. And the return on it. Of course. Yeah, it's great. Well, Rosebud, thank you so much for the visit today. I can't wait to come back and volunteer here. If you need more information, you can check them out on Instagram and on their social media. Keep Growing Detroit and feel free to come by volunteer. They always need people to help out with the organization. I just have a mission this year to make sure that people learn how to grow one thing. And with your guys' help, I hope we could do that. Yeah. Thanks for coming.
