00:00Let me see if this works.
00:02Yeah, I'm good.
00:04Okay, I'm recording too, so if you need it from me, no worries.
00:07Cool.
00:08There's a couple of familiar faces.
00:11Hey, Carl.
00:13Kevin, how are you, sir?
00:15You know what?
00:16I woke up this morning on the right side of the dirt, so I'm feeling all right.
00:19All right.
00:20All right.
00:20Sometimes I have to brush some off just to be sure.
00:23Brad, how are you, man?
00:25I'm doing great, man.
00:26How are you?
00:27I'm doing pretty good.
00:28It's good to see your faces.
00:30I was told I got 10 minutes or so, so we'll just chit-chat a little bit.
00:34You guys are going out on tour.
00:36Look at you, huh?
00:38It's going to be a fun tour, man.
00:41Kevin, you've been by the rat a number of times, but Brad, we haven't seen you in some time.
00:48And it's always, I remember something back in the day.
00:55Brad, your band got me the highest I've ever been.
00:58Before a trade wind show in Seabright, New Jersey.
01:04It was one of those psychosis highs where you're afraid to be in public anymore.
01:09I really don't know how I smoked that much weed before I went on stage, man.
01:14I don't know.
01:16I really don't know.
01:17I finally ended up getting into the venue and finding a spot in the back.
01:24You also taught me how to eat shrimp correctly.
01:28Oh, awesome.
01:29Other than that, I don't know.
01:30Awesome.
01:31Kevin, have you learned how to eat shrimp correctly?
01:34Well, not yet.
01:35I can't wait for Brad to show me how to eat shrimp correctly.
01:39You guys haven't toured before yet, have you?
01:42We haven't.
01:43We've played a bunch of shows in the past just over the years together, but we've never toured before.
01:47So we're really looking forward to it.
01:48The songs that you're playing from this album, Brad, Away from the Sun, they've been around for a while.
01:59Can you guys talk to me about the longevity of your art and how that makes you feel?
02:08I think that it makes me feel amazing, and I'm just thankful for the longevity of it.
02:16And I think it's by the grace of God that we just write songs that people can identify with.
02:22And I think for both these bands, I think both bands could go by the same.
02:27For me, I think they could go by the same token as either band.
02:31You could break the songs down and play them acoustic, and they still have their integrity.
02:36They're still good songs.
02:37And I think really great songs, not every great song, but 90% of great songs should be able to be played on acoustic guitar with a singer and maybe a cajon or something, you know?
02:48Yeah.
02:49What do you think of that, Kevin, and the longevity of the music you created still having meaning to this day?
02:57Not that you haven't been creating music recently, but, you know, you're going out with Candlebox,
03:02and the songs are still around that we got turned on to when you first came out.
03:09Yeah, no, I agree with Brad.
03:11I mean, I think that, you know, we've written songs that people can make their own.
03:19You know, it's a story of their life in some way, shape, or form.
03:23There's always something that they've connected to.
03:25I think there's, you know, there's sincerity and honesty that comes from songwriting that rock and roll bands, you know, I mean, you can use anybody from Journey to Bon Jovi to, you know, Sabbath, any of those bands.
03:39There's always that song that just draws you right in, and I think it's because you're connected to it when you write it as an artist.
03:47You know, Brad wrote Kryptonite in, you know, whatever, 15, 20 minutes in algebra class.
03:51I wrote Cover Me in about 10 minutes at a bar next to my rehearsal studio.
03:56You know, you know, when that song comes to your mind and lyrically you write it down, if it happens fast, it generally is so much from your heart that it's kind of hard to avoid it.
04:11And then there's other songs that we've written that don't have that emotion attached to it.
04:16But, you know, when you have that song like Far Behind or Cover Me or You or He Calls Home from our debut album or, you know, Here Without You, Kryptonite from Three Doors Down, they're just so connected, man, that I think they were destined to be heard.
04:32Now, if you'd have told me that 30 years later that Far Behind would still be in a constant rotation for a lot of rock and roll stations out there, I wouldn't have believed you.
04:40But thank God it has been.
04:43And I'm so lucky that that happened for us.
04:47You know, I am so looking forward to this tour.
04:50I've been looking forward to touring with Three Doors Downs for about five years now.
04:55We've been talking about it, and I'm just so glad that it's happened now.
04:58This is going to be a show that people aren't going to forget.
05:00If you come see this show live, you're going to walk out of there with the biggest smile on your face.
05:04Brad said that before, and I'm going to keep using it because it's the truth, man.
05:08It's going to be three hours of just amazing rock and roll songs and stories that are going to – people are going to walk away just never forgetting this show.
05:17Brad, do you remember any of those writing experiences for the songs on Away from the Sun that stand out to you?
05:24Whether it was a 15-minute, wow, I'm just a conduit for this melody or I'm a conduit for these words hitting this page.
05:32Do you remember any of those episodes even to this day?
05:37Absolutely.
05:38I remember on the song Away from the Sun itself, you know, we had that – the guys had come up with that guitar part,
05:46and we were just sitting there playing through because I – the Better Life record was the last time I played drums on a record,
05:53and the only time I played drums on a record.
05:55But I wrote – when we were writing Away from the Sun, I still wrote – I still played the drums during that writing process,
06:01and we were just sitting there playing through the song Away from the Sun musically,
06:07and, you know, we pretty much had it verse and chorus.
06:10And I just had – like, sometimes the song won't be written the way it is, and, like, it'll just come out.
06:17And the first line of that song that we wrote was – all I had was, Away from the Sun.
06:23I didn't really have anything else.
06:25It was just – and when that part would come around, I would just keep singing it and saying,
06:29man, I need to find some words, and I don't know if it needs to be that or not.
06:34Matt, our guitar player, he's like, man, I like – I mean, go with Away from the Sun.
06:40Build around Matt.
06:41And I built around that, and it became probably the truest song for me that I ever wrote.
06:45And, you know, I remember writing Here Without You sitting in a hotel room
06:50and kind of inspired just by the idea of being away from home
06:54and just being on tour for so long and never being home, you know.
07:02And so, yeah, I definitely remember those instances from Matt pretty vividly.
07:08You know, you brought up a little – a point that I wanted to ask you about.
07:13You are going to be away from home for a while.
07:14What creature comforts are you taking with you on the road now that you couldn't take, you know, back in the day?
07:25I'm still pretty basic.
07:27As long as I can bring my pillows, I got my pillows.
07:30And wherever I go, my pillows go.
07:31If I go to the other side of the planet, my pillows are coming with me.
07:35Pillars?
07:36Yeah.
07:37Sometimes we've got to fly somewhere.
07:39We'd just be going somewhere, and they'd be like, dude, you got to have that big old suitcase?
07:42I'm like, well, half of it is just my pillows.
07:46The other half of it, like my shoes and a couple of shirts and some jeans or whatever.
07:49But I got to have my pillows.
07:51I got a big old head.
07:53It needs a lot of support.
07:56What are you bringing?
07:58Are you bringing your pets, or what are you bringing?
08:01No, I don't bring my pets.
08:02I bring my own sheets for my bunk.
08:04I bring my own pillow.
08:05My pillow is flowing around.
08:06I've had my pillow now for about 28 years.
08:10It's flown around the world with me several times.
08:13And then, of course, it's a feathered-down pillow, man.
08:17I mean, when you find that pillow, you can't.
08:19It's the only thing that you can take with you, man.
08:22You've got to have it.
08:24And it's like my wife, she'll make sure to lay her head on it so I get to smell her hair on my pillow and stuff like that.
08:31But, you know, it's those kinds of things that remind you of home and that make you feel comfortable.
08:36You know, it's really difficult to be on the road for three and four months.
08:38So you want those comforts.
08:40And, of course, you know, your cell phone.
08:42But music, I mean, I take so much music.
08:44I load my phone up with music because a lot of times the Wi-Fi doesn't work on the bus, so you can't really stream it, you know.
08:50And then, of course, you download the movies that you need, and you want to plug those into the TV.
08:54So it's all those kinds of things that can take away the monotony of the day and help you escape, you know, that.
09:00And then, you know, maybe a fold-up bike or an electric scooter or something like that, you know.
09:04Right on.
09:05All right.
09:06We're in pillow moment.
09:07We're doing pillow talk with Brad and Kevin.
09:11I read this article the other day, or not long ago, though, that said when a pillow, if you can fold a pillow in half and it stays folded in half, it's time to replace it.
09:21I was like, are you kidding me?
09:23That's the best time.
09:24No, that's just in, broke in.
09:26If your pillow does not fold in half and stay folded.
09:30That's not, no, no.
09:33Well done.
09:35I look forward to seeing you guys on this tour.
09:37I understand that, you know, we'll have a relationship to present this show, and I appreciate that effort.
09:44And I can't wait to hear these songs brought out live at the Art Center this summer.
09:49It's going to be a grand time.
09:51Thank you, Carl.
09:51We're going to do it.
09:52All right.
09:53Bill, I'm going to send it back to you, my friend.
09:55I think we're at 10 minutes here.
09:56Yeah, thank you so much, Carl.
09:58Gentlemen, be safe.
10:00Have a great day, man.
10:01Thank you for your time.
10:01You too, Carl.
10:02No worries.
10:03Hey, you know, we were here on note one, so we're still here 26 years later.
10:08All good.
10:09Thank you, brother.
10:10Be good, man.
10:11Take care, Carl.
10:12Have a good one.
10:12Bye-bye.
10:13Bye-bye.
10:13Bye-bye.
10:13Bye-bye.
10:13Bye-bye.
10:13Bye-bye.
10:14Bye-bye.
10:15Bye-bye.
10:16Bye-bye.
10:17Bye-bye.
10:17Bye-bye.
10:18Bye-bye.
10:19Bye-bye.
10:20Bye-bye.
10:22Bye-bye.
10:24Bye-bye.
