00:00Ladies and gentlemen, it's Kelly Hanson, Foreigner. How are you?
00:04I'm great. How are you guys?
00:05We are wonderful. Thank you so much for doing this and thank you for being here.
00:09Coming to Pine Knob one last time, I don't like saying that, August 30th with you and Loverboy, dude.
00:14It's strange to say the Foreigner farewell to her, Kelly.
00:18Yeah, I guess in many respects it is, but there we are.
00:25I do want to say thank you. Before we get started,
00:27one of the things that we, Ryan and I were talking about this before you came on with us, Kelly,
00:33your passion on stage, the way you energize an audience,
00:37the one thing the Motor City appreciates is hardworking musicians.
00:39We've always gravitated to it.
00:41And the way you bust your ass on stage every night and when you're here in the Motor City,
00:45don't think it goes unnoticed. We love the energy you bring every time you come here.
00:49Well, you know, I appreciate that. And that's one of the, that has a lot to do with the decision
00:55because it's, it's a very strenuous gig physically, but also vocally that it's a challenging set of songs
01:04and it gets harder and harder every year. And I, and I said, I just refuse to deliver less than,
01:09you know, what I've considered to be stellar quality to anybody.
01:14I just, I am, I would have maybe a little perfectionist gene or whatever, but I don't want to deliver less than everyone deserves
01:22and the songs deserve. So that, that, that figured into the decision.
01:27What's the song you make a meal out of? I mean, you know, the one that you like, okay, I'm, I'm going to really get it.
01:33You get into all of them, but is there one that you really make a meal out of?
01:36Well, you know, everything, there's different variables every night that change whatever song might be the one that's feeling
01:43or sounding the greatest for me or for the band on a particular night.
01:47I mean, is it a big crowd, small crowd? Is it indoors, outdoors?
01:50Is my mix particularly good or bad that night?
01:54You know, all those things play a factor into what songs might be great.
01:58The good news is that we are so fortunate to have a catalog of songs from, from the beginning of the show
02:05to the end of the show that everybody knows. And so it's not like we're waiting for those two songs
02:09at the end of the show that people know. And so any night I could have a strong feeling about any song.
02:17And that's kind of my perspective. I don't really pick favorites.
02:21Do you think during this tour, Kelly, you're going to stop and maybe take a moment
02:24and just look at the crowd when you're, when you're traveling around the country?
02:27Over the course of my career, I've had many times on stage where I am very emotional
02:32and I, I'm assuming that this is probably going to happen to me, uh, on, on this tour.
02:38Um, and, um, uh, it's, it's, it's a bittersweet thing, you know, because, you know,
02:45and, you know, not being able to play in front of these crowds and play these songs live
02:50and is going to be tough. But on the other hand, I'll be able to be able to see the seasons change
02:56at my home. I'll be able to spend time with my family, which eight or nine months of the year,
03:01I don't really get to. So it's, it's a bittersweet thing.
03:04I love what you, and we always, Ryan, we love what you do with the choirs around the country
03:08and what you've done with, with the Grammy Museum Foundation and it's foreignerchoirs.com
03:16is the website, obviously here in Detroit and stuff too. Um, that's a passion thing for you,
03:20isn't it? You can feel the energy. You're so excited when they come on stage.
03:23Well, you know, since COVID, we've had to change our format. We, we, we knew that we couldn't have
03:29choirs coming and sing with us during One Law at Love Is anymore with the, with the COVID situation.
03:33So we created a new, uh, kind of event where there'll be, uh, I believe several choirs playing
03:39or singing before we come on and, uh, there'll be a vote in some way. And then the winner of that
03:47night will receive, um, uh, a prize with our, um, choir promotion partners, uh, Bose. And, um,
03:56it's, it's been an amazing thing because I'm a product of the public schools and, uh, the public
04:01school music classes as, as many of the guys in the band are. And this is our way to kind of give
04:06back a little bit and to hear that the stories and get the notes and emails and letters from choir
04:12directors and parents about how this has affected their kids has been really amazing for us. I think we
04:16get the better end of the deal, frankly. So you're touring with lover boy, an amazing opening act. I
04:21mean, they, they sound great. And then you guys do as well. When's the last time you had a, Oh my God,
04:27I'm hanging out with blank moment at dinner last week with my friend, Chris Santos, who was a judge
04:33when I did the food network show chopped. And, um, and, and, uh, Dave Grohl came in because he was doing
04:43something with Chris. And so we got to kind of talk for a few minutes. So that was like,
04:46it was really great. Cause the last time I'd seen Dave Grohl was we're, we're not really friends.
04:51We're just kind of met a couple of times. And I saw him at the O2 when foreigner basically opened
04:56for Led Zeppelin. Um, and, uh, so that's, that's the last time I saw him. So it was good to see him.
05:02And we talked a little bit and it was really nice.
05:03So you, were you, you're not fanboying though, Kelly, you were just kind of enjoying the moment,
05:07right?
05:07Yeah. You know, I, I like a lot of the stuff that he's done in recent years and, and especially the
05:12documentary that he did on sound city, uh, because that was a part of the, my previous
05:17fan hurricanes history with sound city with, we had a lockout rehearsal there. We did our demos
05:22there. Um, and so that I really, I was really able to appreciate that. And so, yeah, it's kind
05:28of cool. And we're both, you know, LA LA people.
05:32Hey Kelly, since we're along, I was going to hold onto it, but, uh, since we're in those lines,
05:37are you going to do anything else on the food network? Is there anything coming up? I love your
05:41episode of chopped. It's fantastic.
05:44Well, there's nothing, uh, scheduled coming up, but there definitely, I would be open to
05:50that. Um, I've tried to get them to do it, uh, a champion show and have me included because
05:56I didn't win the episode I was on.
05:57Right. You did.
05:58You did.
05:59But, um, yeah, but, but, you know, I, I really do love to cook and, uh, that's another passion
06:06of mine. And, um, and I think it's important to have, uh, passions other than the thing
06:11that you're doing, uh, on a daily basis, like music. So I'm, you know, I'm a motorcyclist
06:16and, uh, and, uh, a cook and I like to do that. So, uh, but if, if, uh, food network wants
06:22to do more with me, I'm totally up for it.
06:24So what, if I asked you for something specific about Detroit, I hate to put you on the spot
06:29there. We're Kelly Hanson with us again, foreign to the farewell tour at Loverboy Wednesday,
06:32August 30th at Pine Knob. We call Pine Knob now, no longer DT, it's Pine Knob again. And
06:37what was the first time you performed here in the Motor City?
06:39Oh, it had to be in the eighties, the late eighties, probably with my previous band,
06:45Hurricane. Yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:47But I don't remember it. I don't remember it at all. Going back to the blurry days.
06:51The blurry days. We're trying to figure out whether it was Clutch Cargo or maybe where
06:55else would it have been? Um, we're trying to, Harpo's, maybe Harpo's.
06:58Harpo's, yeah.
06:59It could have been a club called Harpo's.
07:01Yeah, I definitely played Harpo's.
07:02Okay.
07:02Definitely played Harpo's.
07:04But yeah, you're, you're a Pine Knob now, dude.
07:05Really, really, I remember that really tall stage they had.
07:08Yep. Yeah. It was about 12 feet in the air. My brother's band played there and I remember
07:13just looking up, hurting my neck.
07:17Exactly. Exactly.
07:18Well, thank you so much for everything you've done. And, and with Foreigner and being here
07:22one more time, the Farewell Tour with Loverboy, Wednesday, August 30th at Pine Knob. LiveNation.com
07:28for tickets. It's going to be a fantastic show. I know we're giving away tickets here this
07:31week as well.
07:32I just want to mention too that, uh, I just want to mention too that the, uh, the official
07:36Farewell Tour starts on July 6th in Atlanta. And, uh, but before that, we're going to be
07:41doing a residency at the Venetian in Las Vegas starting March 24th through April 8th.
07:47So people should check that out too, if they're going to go to Vegas.
07:51You, you had to tell us to get out of Detroit in March and go to Vegas. That's, yeah, that
07:54kind of sold itself there. Kelly. Yeah, man. It's, why not? I mean, well, I'm looking out
07:59the window right now and there's a lot of snow on the ground.
08:01Yeah, we'll get out of here.
08:02Yeah. Yeah. We could, we could come see you in Vegas too. Um, we can't wait for everything
08:06again. Um, we'll have a lot of fun at Pine Knob though. What a great concert. What a great
08:12double bill. Is there, is there a Loverboy song you want to, you want to take a, take a
08:16crack at? Let's do. Everybody's working for the weekend. Oh, you'll own that one. You
08:20will. Absolutely. I do hope you guys get, get, get in the mood where you want to come
08:24out and sing with Mike. That would be fantastic. Well, you never know what's going to happen
08:28on this farewell thing. Who knows? It could be all kinds of things happening. Kelly
08:32Hanson, foreigneronline.com, the website, Wednesday, August 30th at Pine Knob. We
08:36appreciate the time. You'd be well. We'll see you soon. Thank you so much. All right.
08:40Thanks Kelly. Bye. Thank you.
