00:00all right we're in hey Detroit it's Angie Starr I am in for Randy Miles and I have a special guest
00:10that I get the opportunity to talk to I call her uh Tasha Tasha Page House how you doing
00:18I'm good how are you I am good girl it is always so good to see you you too I remember when I first
00:26met you we had a mutual friend and she was bragging about this young lady who won first place in BET's
00:34Sunday's Best and that happens to be you yes some a lot of people may not know me as Tasha Page House
00:41right I got married last year but my my stage name is Tasha Page Lockhart that's right okay and you like
00:50to be called Tasha you want that's fine whatever that's fine okay so guys this is your first time
00:59um meeting Tasha Page House now newly married again she was the winner of BET's Sunday Best and she is
01:07the daughter of Lisa Page Brooke the fame from the fame group Witness and she's also part of this
01:14year's McDonald's inspiration gospel tour in Detroit and she has a new single that I heard on the radio
01:21and I was like Randy what is this song girl she was like uh-huh that's Tasha why not me and it's
01:29so you got to tell us a little bit about why not me what is the backstory well the backstory about why
01:35not me is it's really pretty simple um I was having a conversation with my husband he was like I was
01:41telling him about how frustrated I was with the music industry and how you know I feel like I should
01:46be further down the line in my career and all of that he was like stop writing songs just for the church
01:51write songs for the world take yourself out of the box you know what I'm saying so I've always wanted
01:57to sing more than just gospel I've always wanted to branch out and do things and if anybody have been
02:02following me on social media you know I talk about my grandfather who was with Motown and traveled with
02:07Barry Gordy so he was with a group called the monitors so okay you know USA you'll see my
02:12grandfather's picture up on the wall with his group I mean that so that part of me is in my family as
02:18well and I kind of felt like sometimes I was abandoning that side of me um because I can sing
02:24anything and I'm not just limited to just singing gospel so um why not me is a song that anybody can
02:30relate to because we've all said why me we've all asked the question why me whether we're talking to
02:36God ourselves or somebody else why am I going through this why did this happen to me why why
02:40why and sometimes you can look up in 10 years ago by and you still asking questions pointing fingers
02:45placing blame you kind of in a situation where you may feel like you're stuck like you don't know how
02:51to move forward because you're looking for closure from things that have happened to you in your past
02:56so why not me really gives you that power back and it's taking the power back from anybody that ever
03:01hurt you disappointed you abused you um and it's basically saying instead of saying why me I'm gonna
03:07say why not me because we all have to go through things so I know I'm perfect for the this storm that
03:14has been tailor-made just for me that's why not me girl when I heard why not me I was like yes this is
03:22talking directly to me and I love lyrics that are real real life real stories because I just feel like
03:30God gives us things so that we can teach through our own experiences to me he just doesn't work
03:36with perfect people he works with people who can tell the story that really doesn't exist there you
03:43go there you go one day these human beings will wake up okay I've got to ask you about a song uh with
03:52Brian Poppins a beautiful savior how did that a collaboration come about so Brian Poppins reached out
03:59to me and um he wanted me to do a feature for him and the song was called beautiful savior well we
04:05originally met maybe about four years ago I had to sing in a church he was singing at the same church
04:10and I had clowned him because he had a phone case and on the back of his phone case he had a big lion
04:14on the back of it and so I said whose phone is this he was like it's mine I said lion of Judah I was
04:21just making fun and we just got cool just from that one moment right there and he was like I gotta work
04:26with you we gotta do something together we would see each other at the Stellars at the Dove Awards
04:30different events he was like I gotta get you on a song he just kept saying it and um we finally got
04:36on a song together and the song was so good I asked at the time I was still with Kurt Franklin's label
04:40For Your Soul so I asked them could I put it on my record as well so that's where how the collaboration
04:46happened between myself and Brian Poppins no mistakes no mistakes on this planet okay I need to know
04:53one thing that we do not know about Tasha
04:56ah one thing you don't know about me is I shoot pool very very well
05:02yeah yeah I I when I say I shoot but it's like I I try to act like I don't at first so if I'm playing
05:10okay you show and then by the middle of that game it's a wrap it's a wrap all they kids in the
05:24street all they kids all in the street so I gotta ask you when did you start like how old were you
05:29oh from a child I was I grew up in the house and we had a pool table in our basement okay so um I was
05:36always in the basement I was all really this is funny I was in the basement sneaking listening to
05:42r&d music you said sneaking oh yeah we grew up in a strict no people don't know what kojic is that's
05:51church of god in christ right we grew up in a strict kojic household where they were like
05:56no pants no this no that um you can't really spin that over nobody's house you can't listen to
06:04anything but gospel um so I had to sneak and listen to like tweet uh d'angelo
06:10dmx I was like a huge rough rider fan it was just crazy I was sneaking and listening to it in the
06:18basement okay in the basement and then we had a drum set in the basement so I played drums too
06:23okay a lot of time by myself in the basement okay so you picked up pool and the drums yeah my dad is a
06:29drum really yeah he taught me a lot so music is just all in your dna yes all right now do you have
06:36any kids I have two I have an 11 uh 11 year old and a 19 year old now are they into music at all
06:43they are my oldest he's he raps he doesn't okay he can't he can't hold a note if you
06:48if you tied it to his hands or wrapped it around his hands he just he raps though he's very talented
06:54um and he's that's my athlete though he could the boy can play some basketball he can play some
06:59my my youngest son is the singer and the actor okay and how old is your younger son 11 11 years
07:06old okay now I gotta ask you this what was it like getting ready for the virtual McDonald's
07:11inspiration celebration it's a little different it's all virtual it was an amazing experience
07:17um you know I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with McDonald's again I was on tour with them
07:22before I want to say in 2015 2016 we did the uh McDonald's tour and that's when we were able to
07:29go around from you know different cities yeah so this one was a lot different because you know you're
07:34just taping it um but being able to work with uh Donald Lawrence he's such a perfectionist oh girl I
07:41love me some Donald Lawrence he he so he knows how to bring the best out of you he knows um when you
07:49can when you can bring more when you can pull back he's just an amazing producer and um and man of
07:54God so whenever I get the chance to work with him in the company it's always it's always top notch
08:00I'm sorry someone's called it it's a it's always top notch and um we get a chance to create and uh it's
08:11just a it's a peaceful atmosphere everybody's loving on each other and it's just it's fun it was
08:17amazing it's an amazing experience so it's going to air here in Detroit I want to say October 4th
08:21correct it starts um actually the first I think the first show is airing this weekend right Chicago
08:33and then Detroit is right after that that's right yeah the fourth right okay real quick before I let
08:39you go Detroit has such a powerful legacy when it comes to gospel music so how does it feel when
08:45you working with great since you grew up with like your mom it's it's amazing you know we did a
08:51tribute to Mary Mary at the BMI Trailblazers Awards a few years ago and I can't it's hard to sing with
08:59her because it's like the whole time I'm like okay I can't believe that's my mom like and she's
09:06incredible so I'm missing I'm supposed to come in I'm missing my part because I'm like
09:09too it's amazing though you know I'm so happy and proud to have been born and raised in Detroit
09:19Michigan um and just the the rich heritage and legacy of from music to um everything that
09:29Barry Gordy was able to do with Motown you know some of the most talented on both sides
09:35R&B and soul and gospel you know from the Aretha's to the Stevie Wonders and you know all of them and
09:43then Temptations four times and then the gospel side you got the Winans Commission the Clark Sisters
09:49you can't talk about music period without mentioning Detroit that's right that's right it's an honor
09:54um to be from Detroit but it's also a lot of pressure because whenever you say you're from Detroit
09:59before you even open your mouth they're like oh she about to blow I'm like oh lord help me
10:05but I'm grateful to me too I've grown up um in Detroit and been around so many awesome amazing
10:13people I've learned so much that I use and I've applied to my life to this day so I definitely
10:19feel like you are a musical gift from God to us and I we're doing a contest a singing contest for young
10:28kids and teens between the ages of 10 and 17 we're looking for Detroit's next gospel singer young gospel
10:35singer so do you have any tips for young aspiring gospel singers um I would say to be the most
10:46authentic version of yourself that you can be don't be afraid of your own voice don't be enough but don't
10:52let your voice control you okay control you know so perfect your craft continue to sing continue to
10:59um continue to study other great uh singers um Quincy Jones said something he said in order to be great
11:09you have to study the greats so if you want to be great in anything that you do in whatever your field
11:15is then seek out and study other people in your field that have been successful in the areas you're
11:21trying to be successful in get up under someone serve somebody learn the ropes get the first-hand
11:28experience it's not enough to just watch some YouTube videos but actually get that one-on-one
11:33you know close in proximity with a person and so you're watching them as they're doing it so
11:39that way you don't make some of the same mistakes that we made along the way learn the business learn
11:44what your rights are learn you know what I'm saying do your research in the in your in your field
11:49and so that way you don't mismanage your money you don't blow through your money you don't and you
11:53can become an owner of what you're doing so that way you don't have record labels hanging over your
11:59head telling you what you can't do what you cannot do what you can sing you know you're not in control
12:04of your royalties you don't know how much you have coming in it's just a lot that you you have to learn
12:09it's more than just standing behind a microphone singing that's the easiest part to it I love that
12:14easiest part to it is actually the performance that's everything that comes along before that
12:20um that is really critical to your success all right all right I love that Tasha Paige Lockhart a
12:28lot of you know her as but newly married Tasha Paige house was she cool with Tasha any closing thoughts
12:34I'm just grateful I'm grateful to all of my supporters and people that have followed me on
12:39social media I'm grateful to all of the program directors and radio announcers such as yourself
12:45Randy Miles um Detroit Praise Network all of you know all of the stations all of the people that
12:53have streamed the music down through the years support my family um and everybody that's embracing
12:58and connecting with the new song why not me it's really important that we band together and we stand
13:03together and support one another um because as you know when they implemented streaming it
13:09really we took a big hit from streaming yes yeah we took a really really big hit with streaming
13:15and so now we're trying to just adapt to this new normal um and especially with COVID being around and
13:22us not being able to perform we need your support we need those downloads we need those streams we need
13:28those shares you know what I mean so I'm grateful for the support that I do get but let's keep going let's
13:34push this song um and let's really share it and really get the message out there I really want
13:39people to really learn the song listen to the words and let the message really penetrate your spirit
13:44so that way you can really learn how to look at trials and storms in a different way and it's not
13:50overwhelming overwhelming you see why not me is a song of hope and it'll give you power to be able to
13:56overcome anything that you can ever um experience in your life so it's not just for a certain age group
14:03it's not just for a certain demographic of people it's for everybody I'm telling you when I heard it
14:10it was a gift I say it all the time but a gift from God it was what I needed to hear right then and I'm
14:16telling you I got it up I was like Randy what is this song I just heard it was like wide eyes she's like
14:22oh that's Tasha I was like ah so bless you thank you for your gift that you give girl for real
14:29for real and I'm looking forward to you doing your thing thank you so much please um October 4th
