00:01Scholar Sharifa Munira Alatas has slammed University Technology Mara's defense
00:06of a group of students in a viral video who wore Ku Klux Klan costumes as part
00:11of an assignment. In a Facebook post, the former assistant professor said proper
00:17academic discussions on racism should have been held instead of staging a
00:21silly Halloween parade in terribly bad taste. She added that there should have
00:26been an academic forum about the topic instead adding that the clips would give
00:30the wrong impression both in the country and worldwide. Former Batukawan MP
00:36Kasturi Pato voiced similar concerns warning that the university's handling
00:41of the issue risked glorifying the KKK's brutal legacy. She added that while it
00:47is important to understand the history of racism, it must be balanced by the
00:50stories of human rights and social justice defenders. Separately, police are
00:56investigating a viral video involving the students over concerns of racial
01:00discrimination. Sepang Police Chief Nurhizam Bahaman said a report on the video
01:06was received at 7 24 p.m. yesterday, Malaysia Gazette reported. He added that
01:12the video content was believed to be aimed at fostering an understanding of racial
01:16discrimination and how new laws were enacted to address it.
