Educationists are urging the government to assist poorer families in addressing the growing
00:06
reliance on private tuition among students, which leads to a widening knowledge disparity.
00:13
Former University Malaya Professor of Education T. Marimuthu described private tuition as
00:19
running parallel to the mainstream school system.
00:23
He said while tuition produces higher-scoring school leavers, it primarily benefits students
00:28
with middle-class backgrounds.
00:30
In contrast, he said those from the B40 group are disadvantaged due to their economic circumstances
00:36
as they are unable to afford tuition.
00:40
Marimuthu urged the government to either sponsor tuition lessons for students from B40 households
00:45
or introduce free extra classes in schools.
00:49
Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia Chairman Nur Azimah Rahim agreed with Marimuthu,
00:55
noting that low-income families simply cannot afford the extra expense private tuition incurs.
01:02
Nur Azimah said more effective teaching in schools would naturally negate the need for
01:07
additional tutoring.
