00:00A teachers group says some teachers are taking on part-time jobs to pay off debts incurred
00:06from living beyond their means.
00:08Azizi Hassan, president of Ikatan Guru Muslim Malaysia, said the number of part-time teachers
00:14is very small, however, he added that there are still many teachers who are committed
00:19to their profession.
00:20He told FMT that some teachers have been found trying to supplement their income with part-time
00:25jobs in order to keep up with the high cost of living, especially in cities.
00:30He was commenting on a reminder from education minister Fadlina Siddiq that teachers looking
00:35to take on part-time jobs must first obtain approval from the education ministry.
00:40According to a 2023 circular, approval must be obtained two months beforehand.
00:45The circular also states that civil servants involved in online businesses are considered
00:49to have taken on part-time work.
00:51Azizi said it was crucial that teachers abide by the guidelines as failing to do so could
00:56potentially affect their focus at schools.
00:59He said it will affect the educational system and the teachers' quality of work, adding
01:03that in the end, the victims will be the students.
