Peter Dutton says he wants house prices to 'steadily increase' to protect home owners

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has taken his son Harry on the campaign trail as the Liberal leader's pitch to first home buyers takes on a family theme.

00:00It was a family affair for Peter Dutton today as he brought his son Harry to the outskirts

00:07of Brisbane to see some newly constructed homes and perhaps Harry himself might buy

00:12one. He told reporters that he was in the market for a home and saving like mad. Although

00:17his father wasn't too keen to answer when asked whether he might dip into his pocket,

00:22the bank of mum and dad, of course, exactly the kind of thing the coalition wants to end

00:26with its proposal to make mortgage interest payments tax deductible for first home buyers,

00:32provided they buy new homes like the ones that we visited today in that Greens held seat.

00:37It's one of two seats the Greens, one off the Liberal Party in the 2022 election here in

00:43Brisbane and Peter Dutton wants both of them back. Both candidates were alongside the opposition

00:48leader in Ryan and later on in the day in the seat of Griffith at the food bank distribution

00:53centre behind me where the coalition announced that if re-elected it would give nearly $20 million

00:57to the charity food bank for Australians struggling to afford to put food on the table. It's part of

01:03the cost of living message but housing really is the number one theme of the day. Peter Dutton

01:08is battling against economists who continue to say that his policy by pushing up demand

01:12will push up house prices. Peter Dutton was happy to say he did want house prices to go up provided

01:18that they did so sustainably and within moderation. I want to see them steadily increase. I don't want

01:23to see a situation where Labor crashes the economy and somebody who's paid $750,000 for a house today

01:30is worth $600,000 in 18 months time under an Albanese bank government. That would be a disaster.

01:36Exactly what that means remains to be seen but in the meantime the coalition is keen to argue

01:40that by promoting new builds will also boost housing supply, a longer term solution to the housing

01:47crisis. That is what they want first home buyers to hear from them.
