Lisha Blackhurst: Yorkshire woman who fell from fifth-floor balcony suffered long term mental health issues

A 35-year-old woman who died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony in York had lived with long-term mental health issues, an inquest heard. Lisha Ruth Blackhurst - whose family said she left a “trail of love and unforgettable memories” - died on November 5, 2024, in the car park of Rydale House, in York, where she lived.  The inquest heard Lisha had a history of depression, anxiety, insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder. She had struggled with her mental health for many years, the inquest held in Northallerton Coroners Court on Tuesday April 8, was told. Assistant coroner Jonathan Leach concluded Lisha had taken her own life.

00:00Hello, I'm Rachel Grealish from the Yorkshire Post and today I have the latest from the inquest into the death of Leisha Blackhurst.

00:07At the inquest, which took place on Tuesday, April 8th at North Allerton Coroner's Court, Leisha was described in a statement by her family who were present as a creative soul, full of joy and individuality.

00:20The inquest heard how the 35-year-old who lived in York spent years battling mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and PTSD.

00:30On November 5th, 2024, Leisha died after falling from the balcony of her fifth floor flat.

00:35She died at the scene from a traumatic head injury, the inquest heard.

00:40The coroner ruled Leisha's death as suicide.
