00:00Court of Appeal President Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim appears likely to helm the judiciary
00:06as the next Chief Justice, with incumbent Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat set to retire in June,
00:12according to a source.
00:14If appointed, Abang Iskandar, the current holder of the judiciary's second-most senior
00:18position, will become the first judge from Sarawak to reach its pinnacle.
00:23The source said the appointment appears to be strategic as there is presently no other
00:27Sarawakian who is likely to come close to being made top judge in the near future.
00:33Abang Iskandar will reach the mandatory retirement age for judges on July 1, but is expected
00:38to receive a six-month extension to his tenure from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
00:44The source also said newly-installed federal court judge Ahmad Teri Rudin Saleh is the
00:49frontrunner to replace Abang Iskandar as Court of Appeal President.
00:54Under the law, the Judicial Appointments Commission is required to send a list of
00:57candidates for the top post to the Prime Minister, who will, in accordance with Article 122B
01:03of the Constitution, tender his advice to the King.
01:07The article also requires the King to act on the Prime Minister's advice after consultation
01:12with the Conference of Rulers.
