Dangerous nighttime storms barrel through multiple states

Intense storms led to tornado and flash flood warnings up and down the central U.S. on the night of April 2, as storm chaser Aaron Jayjack explains from Arkansas.

00:00Our coverage continues with storm chaser Aaron Jajak joining us live now from Clarkdale, Arkansas.

00:06Aaron, this has been a nasty setup in northeast Arkansas.

00:10What have you been experiencing and what are you dealing with right now?

00:16Yeah, we just had a supercell cross the interstate here.

00:20I-55 runs right through here, through Clarkdale, out of Memphis.

00:23We're north of Memphis. That supercell crossed the interstate.

00:27We had a huge, massive wall cloud. Fortunately, there was no tornado.

00:30Although, I do see some emergency lights just up the interstate right where it crossed.

00:36So, I'm wondering if someone got blown off the interstate there.

00:39But massive wall cloud came through. Big time CG lightning and whatnot.

00:43And now we're dealing with the line of storms.

00:45The main line of storms that are approaching from the west.

00:48It actually is raining on me right now. You can probably see flashes of lightning back behind me.

00:52This main line of storms is severe warning where I'm at.

00:55A little further to the south, approaching Memphis.

00:57We have another tornado warning down there and some tornado warnings off to our north of Memphis.

01:02So, we're not out of the woods yet here. We're still dealing with some severe weather.

01:06But once this main line passes through Memphis, we should be good here in Memphis the rest of the night.

01:11We should be over with the severe weather for tonight.

01:13But this threat is going to continue off to the east, as you mentioned.

01:16Make sure you're trying to stay weather aware tonight.

01:19Even though it's becoming into the nighttime, the nocturnal hours.

01:21People are going to sleep. Still got to pay attention.

01:23Keep those alerts on your app.

01:25Make sure you're ready to enact your safety plan if you need to.

01:30With that really low hanging wall cloud just scraping over the ground there.

01:35What's your plan for tomorrow? Are you going to be chasing tomorrow as well?

01:41Yeah, tracking another round of severe weather tomorrow.

01:44Likely in Arkansas. Maybe a little further south in Arkansas than today.

01:48We played more of the central and northern part of Arkansas.

01:51But likely a little bit more southern. Maybe Little Rock and south.

01:54But also a flood threat. There's a historic flood threat.

01:57We're in the midst of it now with this rain coming down.

02:00There is flash flood watches in the area.

02:02So, tracking that severe threat. Another round of severe tomorrow.

02:07And that flash flood threat.

02:19In Clarkdale, Arkansas. Not too far to the north of Memphis.

02:23And that's where we've had a series of storms here barrel through.

02:26I'm going to revisit this area in a moment.

02:28But in the meantime, I want to take us up into Indianapolis.

02:30Because we have destructive straight line winds barreling through the Indianapolis metro.

02:35Now pushing east of downtown.

02:36But we also have a tornado threat on the north side.

02:39As a bookend vortex has likely produced a spin-up on the north side.
