The 46th Express Individual of the Year Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, but for the first time in its history, no one was awarded Individual of the Year.
Transcript
00:00For the first time since its inception, the Express Individual of the Year Awards featured
00:06awards in other categories, but none for its esteemed title.
00:11For the first time in the history of these awards that we have not had an awardee in
00:19the Individual of the Year category.
00:24Truth be told, the panel, simply put, did not find an individual contribution which
00:31met our established criteria.
00:36This is cause for a pause, for if one thinks about it for a moment, we as a country certainly
00:44are in need of actions to pull together this nation of ours.
00:51Over two dozen applications were received.
00:54We elected to proceed, confident in our conviction that presenting such an award for its own
01:04sake was not where we wanted to land.
01:09Indeed, we had to take a bold stand and acknowledge that amongst its objectives, the Individual
01:18of the Year must inspire and elevate the searching actions and national discourse.
01:28In some inspiring news, however, world record pan-marathon holder Joshua Rugerello has been
01:35named the Express Youth of the Year 2024.
01:39His mother collected the award on his behalf.
01:42Thank you so much for affording him the privilege and honor of being the Express Youth of the
01:49Year Award 2024.
01:52It is an amazing thing, just to think that my son is 27, wow, 20 going to be 28 is excellent.
01:59Anything, any activity that promotes unity in a country and makes people feel good, makes
02:08them smile a while, makes them happy is a wonderful thing.
02:12And I'm so grateful that he has been able to do that.
02:15Meantime, Habitat for Humanity was recognized for 27 years of dedicated service to the national
02:22community through the provision of housing solutions for the most vulnerable.
02:28In 2024, Habitat for Humanity would have served and impacted 6,873 lives in 2024, could not
02:37have done it without our donors, our volunteers.
02:41All of those who have contributed, but I just told you the number is somewhere between
02:46175,000 to 200,000, just as the quantitative statistics that is documented.
02:55What about that which is not documented?
02:59How can we do this?
03:00We'll continue to join arms.
03:02So if you celebrate with us today, I say don't celebrate with a clap.
03:07Don't celebrate with a smile.
03:09You have to celebrate with more than that.
03:11I invite you to become a member of Habitat for Humanity.
