The Texans are on a tackle run after signing Cam Robinson and then Trent Brown. The Drive's Clint Stoerner and Ron "The Show" Hughley break down what it all means.

00:00All right, Clint, when you were out Trent Brown, which to me was, again, they just,
00:05hey, they are signing these tackles. Not as many on the interior were, you know,
00:11it felt like it was more the issue, but now, like, they signed Trent Brown, who, if you
00:17forgot, nine-year veteran. He played three games with the Bengals last year. He tore his
00:22patella tendon, so that's kind of one to watch with his injury. But he had good years with a
00:29Patriots, the Raiders, played with the Niners, and Luke, Luke, you missed it, Luke, Luke came
00:36out the gates smoking fire, and he said he thought that he, he thought Trent Brown was a better
00:41tackle than, than Cam Robinson, so. Oh, my God. And then, and then when posed the same question
00:48with Titus Howard, he took too long with his answer, so it was, it was, it was me as well,
00:57but they signed him after signing Cam Robinson earlier in the week, and obviously, they traded
01:05Laramie Tunzel, but now at this point, they've got Titus, who is a starting tackle, Blake Fisher,
01:11who started the tail end of the year last year, including multiple playoff games, Cam Robinson,
01:16who has 101 starts at left tackle in his career, including starting the last two years at left
01:24tackle in Jacksonville and Minnesota, and now they add Trent Brown as well. All these tackles,
01:31what, what, where did, where is this taking you with the Trent Brown signing? Well, look, I,
01:36this is the direction that I, that I think it's, first and foremost, to me, is D'Amico and Nick,
01:43and Nick Caley, they, they have got to be sick and tired of, of playing guys out of position
01:50due to injury, right? Like, their, the depth across the board last year was very, very suspect,
01:55right? I mean, across the board, one would say the starting lineup, the starting five was suspect
02:01across the board, but, but the reality of it is, your depth was a major problem, right? And, and
02:06what, what I see him going out and doing now, now, Trent Brown, at his age and at his size,
02:12he may not be able to give you but six or eight games, right? But you, but you, you've got,
02:18maybe he can give you a full season, I don't know, but when you look at, when you look at
02:22the, the, the tackle depth right now, I mean, you're, you're two injuries away from Nick Broker
02:28having to back up a guy at, at tackle. I mean, do you remember that last year? I mean, you got
02:32Titus Howard bumping down and playing guard and you got Broker potentially, you know, who was,
02:37I don't, I'm guessing maybe he was just the best suited to try to play tackle, but I'm pretty sure
02:41that he was, he's a guy that, that needs to be inside, right? He was, he was one injury away
02:47from needing to play tackle at a time when you needed it, you needed him to be a backup guard,
02:51right? And so, you know, your, your guard situation, you look at, I mean, you had to
02:56move Titus Howard down there because the depth that your guard situation, your, your guard
03:00positions was, was thin, right? Was suspect. So I think to me, what all of these moves at the
03:06tackle position and even the moves interior wise, again, I think, are you surprised it's more at
03:12the tackle position? Oh yeah. Yeah. No, no question. I I'm shocked that I'm shocked that
03:17there had, there was not bigger splash, more aggressive, riskier moves taken at the interior,
03:24interior offensive line. They have four tackles now that you could say, am I right on it? Yeah.
03:32Four tackles now that could be starting caliber, right? Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. Look,
03:39but I mean, this is, this has got to be, we're going to create competition. We, we want to bring
03:44in dudes that play the game at a nasty level, even if they do have some flaws and they're not
03:48as good past protection as obviously Larry Ritonsel and even Titus Howard on his best days.
03:54This has got to be a depth play. That's what I was thinking. And a physicality play like a
04:01mentality every day. Like how are you wired as an offensive lineman? Like all of these moves have to
04:07first and foremost be, it seems to me, it's more about depth and physicality, depth and,
04:16and mental approach on a daily basis. And how have you had success
04:19to date? Are you nasty? Are you a dog? And they're going to hope that that pans out better than
04:25a bunch of high paid guys that as Larry would say, we're wearing skinny jeans and posted on
04:31Instagram so that, that, that is, we'll see how that, how that plays out because there's a lot
04:36of work to be done inside. I, this is, I'm blown away with, with what they, the decisions that
04:44they've made. I don't dislike it. How, what do you mean? Are you blown away in a positive manner?
04:50Just the direction, the direction. I mean, again, I mean, you got to remember we we've
04:53heard every decision maker in the building over there since the season last year, talk about
04:58fixing the past protection from the inside out, fixing the offensive line from the inside out.
05:03We heard the head coach when asked specifically, how do you grade offensive linemen? Can they pass
05:07protect? And every guy they brought in here, you, you can argue is, has struggled recently
05:14in the past protection department. You can argue that every move that they made, none of them were
05:20aggressive moves that were, Hey man, we got to protect our quarterback at all costs. Even if it
05:24costs a little bit more money and we got to be aggressive early, early and free agency. Like
05:28none, they didn't do any of that. They didn't do any of that. They they've taken their time.
05:31They've been super patient. They moved out the best pass blocking lineman that they hadn't on
05:36the whole team. They signed a bunch of, a bunch of, of bargains bark. Yeah, absolutely. Whether
05:42it's a one year deal or a $2 million deal, a bunch of bargain deals. And most of those bargain deals,
05:47the most impressive ones are at the tackle position, right? Even if you give Lake and
05:51Tomlinson a chance to be like a, a true blue star and garden gardens, even if you give that,
05:59even if you, you, you accept that and that's, that's not what I, that's not how I view it.
06:02Um, we'll see how it pans out, but even if they think that you're still a couple of guys short
06:08inside. Yeah. So yeah, the, the path to me is more of like, well, I'm like, what the hell is going
06:13on, but the actual individuals and the actual like temperament in that room changing. I think,
06:19I think they've, I mean, does this mean that they've viewed Titus as a guard now to you
06:23with all, all of the tackles that they like? Oh, that's the scary part because I just don't
06:29believe now. I think if you're going to do that, now's the time to make the decision,
06:32move him in there, let him play guard. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. But I just,
06:36I believe that Titus Howard is better suited to be a tackle. And I believe that he'd be one of the
06:41better tackles on his team. If they'd let him play tackle, I think he's out of position at the guard
06:45position. So for that to be a, a fix and an, and an answer now would be a very interesting move.
06:52It'd be very interesting. It's definitely on the table, right? I mean, like it's on the table.
06:57The numbers will tell you it's what's going to happen. Yeah. Cause I mean, I mean, yeah,
07:02Blake Fisher and Trent Brown being your swing tackle, that's a lot of swing tackle.
07:09And guys that you don't envision that can play multiple positions, right? Like I don't,
07:14I don't get the sense that Trent Brown can play others like guard or center.
07:21Or Blake Fisher. The interesting thing is you got a second round pick that has maybe a,
07:25maybe a bright future at, at the tackle position. And you've got a couple of older
07:29players that you signed that even, even if they are the best version of themselves,
07:37according to what you paid Titus Howard, you think more highly of him.
07:42And now in the, in the, in the, in the, the, the plan is going to be to bump him inside. It's
07:48again, I don't, I don't, uh, the, the path that they've taken has been really,
07:51really interesting to me, but, um, you know, the guys that they've signed, I think are going
07:56to be really, really, really good in a sense of, of flipping that, that O-line room.
