The Drive's Clint Stoerner and Ron Hughley react to the Texans signing All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. to a three-year, $90 million extension.

00:07especially in moments like this, the Texans are doing business,

00:12comparative, let's say, like teams like the Cowboys, who, when they get a player that you

00:18know your ass is going to sign, like you know you're going to sign, and they, the Texans,

00:24they get out in front of it, I mean quick. The minute they can sign them, they do it.

00:29Your thoughts on Derrick Stingley Jr. being the highest paid corner in NFL history?

00:35Love it. No surprise whatsoever. Absolutely love it. Love the decision.

00:40Now I think it's, I don't know if it's changing with time or what, but I think it's,

00:48it's a little, the conversation around the dollars is a little bit blown out of proportion. Based on

00:52what I've heard, I know it's a 30 million dollar a year deal, but if you tack it on to the two

00:58years that are remaining, and what you get Derrick Stingley's service at over the next five years,

01:04is a hair above what J.C. Horn got in Carolina. If you, it's not five million dollars a year more.

01:12J.C. Horn signed a four-year deal with one year left on his contract, and if you average it out,

01:16it's 20 some odd million, and then if you look at, if you look at the way Derrick Stingley's

01:21unfolds here, it's slightly more, maybe a million, million and a half more per year.

01:25It's not five million more per year. So a little bit, when I first saw it, I was like, whoa, what

01:30the hell is this? But then when you start doing the math, you start seeing kind of how these,

01:34I guess the new age deals are coming so early. It really averages out, the player gets his

01:40guaranteed money, and overall the team spreads it over five years. It's a win-win.

01:48So I love it. I've always been a fan of Derrick Stingley, the player. The injuries were a concern.

01:56He appears to have nipped that in the bud for the most part, which put him in a position for this,

02:01and then on the back side of that, I'm gonna tell you, like I was, I was blown away with

02:07Derrick Stingley when we had him in a post-game press conference this year. We had him, me, him,

02:12me and Sean had him one-on-one immediately following the game, and Ron, it was immediately

02:21clear how cerebral of a player he is. Like this is not the most physically demanding position,

02:31what I believe in sports. You're chasing around four, three to four, five, four, six guys, and

02:37you have no idea where they're going, and you're tasked to follow them, and backpedal half the

02:42time. It is the most physically demanding position in all of sports, I believe. He's not only great

02:49at that, when he lines up inside, when he's talking about leverage, when he's talking about

02:56quarterback tendencies, when he's talking about wide receiver tendencies, it's clear this guy

03:02is not just next level physically, this guy's next level mentally as well, and other than the

03:09day that he cold-cocked Dalton Schultz in spring training, he is a level-headed dude that is even

03:17keel, that you can depend on, and has a knack for making big plays in the biggest moments of games,

03:23and so this is, if anybody's ever going to get a top-of-the-market deal, to me, this one right

03:29here is as blatantly obvious as you're going to get. Yeah, no, the only thing here of late was

03:38the injuries. I said yesterday, there was some earliness, maybe you could really look at it now

03:47that we've seen him play more, of like Luffy putting him in just situations that just didn't

03:52really show his skill set as much, but in the last year and a half, there is an argument and

04:03a discussion that he's been the best corner in the game, won the defensive player of the year

04:12award at the same position, but I think there's an argument that Derek Stingley has been that, and

04:19and now I think the best part about it is, you know, sometimes, and we did this last year and

04:27I thought it was fair, like, all right, hey, Nico, are we really sure that Nico is a guy that is a

04:37top-10 receiver? Are we really sure that? Now, some of you will say, oh, I think it was a fair

04:44thing. I wonder after a year, like, will we really see that? And we got to see that. The

04:52great thing about this for Texans fans is this is a deal of, it's just if he stays healthy,

05:00like this isn't a situation of, hey, man, you know, are we sure we have the goods? Are we sure

05:07we have a great player? Or boy, you need him to really take a huge step to really meet this.

05:15No, like, you know what, you know what you have, like, you have a great player and the only thing

05:24that prevents him right now to be a great player is his health. And as you said, that hasn't been

05:30a problem. He went this full year without having, you know, any issues, which was an issue before.

05:36So I think that's a, that's a thing that, that was, you said, no brainer makes it easy if

05:43like, yeah, you, you, you know what you had. Yeah. It's a, to me though, I do want to go back to,

05:51to what I said earlier about the, the, the cerebral aspect of this thing, the mental aspect

05:55of this thing. And just from the organization's perspective, right. Is, you know, you gotta,

06:00you gotta take a snapshot of, of the moment that we're talking about when he's asked against the

06:05Miami Dolphins to, to shadow, let's go back to when he was asked after, after Amari Cooper went

06:11for 200 plus right here at NRG stadium one week. And then two weeks later, you play him in the

06:15playoffs and he shadows him and you keep, you, you keep them out of the box score. Right. And

06:20then you look to Tyreek Hill this year against the Miami Dolphins. And the ability to shadow

06:26is one thing, the ability to shadow and say, Hey, my man is as good as yours physically is one thing,

06:31but I'm thinking from the coach's perspective and the organization's perspective. Now, when you,

06:35when you now have a player that has the, the ability, the mental capacity to go over and

06:40know the quarterback's tendencies to is not going to throw the ball deep over, you know, deep down

06:45down the field to a slot receiver. When I'm looking at Tyreek Hill, his, his tendencies are based on

06:51tape and percentages that he's going to run an out route. Once he gets beyond once, if he outside

06:56releases and he, and he gets to 16, 18 yards, he's going to run an out route. If he's not looking

07:01back for the ball, it's not a go route. He's going to run an out route. And then you jump it

07:04and pick it like the ability to process all of that. Uh, in, in that, in that moment, I'm not

07:09saying there's none of the guys in the league that can do it, but I will tell you, there's not many

07:13that can, um, that have that level of, uh, that's physical skillset along with that mental capability.

07:19I just, if you're the organization, it's one of them like, Hey man, the, the risk that is

07:24the injuries that early on in the career, because of what this guy can do in these particular

07:31situations. So, um, yeah, Ron, look, I'm, I'm a okay with it. Love it. Um, it's, it's, uh,

07:39it's a sweet deal. It's a sweet treat to be honest with you. It's a sweet deal for the Texans as well

07:43to be able to spread money over five years. Um, right. I mean, that that's the, that's the sweet

07:48part of this is you get, he gets his guaranteed money, which is, which is really all the players

07:53looking for. And that second contract is just a huge amount of guaranteed money. He gets that

07:58he gets it early, right. They have to play the fourth and fifth year with no guarantees,

08:02playing a fourth and fifth year with a backend guarantee that's through the roof.

08:05And then the team gets the luxury of spreading it out over those five years.

08:09You think, you think this is how the Texans are going to do business with their guys?

08:13Or do you think this is just Nico and Stingley have just been certain cases? Like, do you expect

08:20as soon as will is able to get rolling, he gets a deal. As soon as CJ is able to get a deal,

08:26he gets a deal as soon as, as you know, Petrie is somebody that's another.

08:31Yeah, no, I think we'll does. Um, I think we'll does a hundred percent. I think it depends on

08:39how CJ plays this year. Um, and I don't, uh, Petrie's I don't know if Petrie's even on that

08:45level, but, but like you said, Petrie would be more of a guy that comes along. It has a really

08:48good year this year. Then he's on that Nico level of like, Oh, you got one really, really

08:52bang up good year. Do you want to give him that extension? They even did it with Titus, right?

08:59Which I get it. It's like, Hey man, because what they've done now is you don't have to

09:05worry about having to go over sauce Gardner, uh, Trent McDuffie or having to go over whoever,

09:13right. Those guys haven't been signed yet. Right. They go ahead and knock that thing out.

09:18I wonder, is that, is that their plan of attack on how they do business versus just certain,

09:24certain guys. So it's definitely the polar opposite of what Jerry's doing in Dallas,

09:28which is a good thing. I don't have time to have a bad time.

09:34He said, he go, we go wait till, uh, Oh, uh, Oh, Hendrickson gets his deal first. So he go,

09:39he go, let's go. He's going to let them all get it. I mean, Michael Parsons. Yeah,

09:44my God has shut the hell up. Right. And you sit there and say, Hey, no, Jerry. Hey,

09:48take your time, Jerry. Well, she wasn't there. Take your time pods. I could probably lost his
