As a veteran, did you appreciate Tristan Kassas speaking up about it as well,
00:04
or is that something maybe you want other players to keep behind the scenes?
00:07
I look at it from a point of view, it's not my decision.
00:10
I'm not out here to try and influence one person either way or not.
00:14
And as I said, if it was my decision, I'm the closer.
00:19
I'm doing this. But it's not.
00:21
There's a competition, there's an active competition, no matter what.
00:24
I think there's guys who have been in solidified roles that it's like,
00:27
at the end of the day, you need to win that job.
00:29
I come into camp every single time looking to win a job,
00:32
whether it be just a spot on the roster, whether it be the ninth inning roll.
00:34
That's my job. I'm trying to make a team every year.
00:37
And that's where I feel like I can get the best for me.
00:39
And I don't get that complacency kicking in.
00:41
So, yeah, that's, yeah, I think it's just we leave all that stuff.
00:45
And if you're good enough, you're good enough and you'll be there.
00:47
Well, Liam, it's always fascinating to me because I come from the world of football.
00:52
So, like, American, American.
00:55
Yeah, American, American football.
00:59
Alex Cora talked about Bregman as being a leader in the clubhouse.
01:02
You seem like you have a unbelievable personality.
01:04
Like if I was your teammate, you'd be a guy that has this great leadership quality.
01:09
And but in football, you're you're always on the field and you can
01:13
you can contribute every single game.
01:15
Whereas a closer, you might not play a couple games.
01:18
What's that like for being a leader when it whether it's a pitcher or DH
01:24
or somebody who might not be on the field every day,
01:28
somebody who's pitching a couple, you know, every five days.
01:31
How do you lead in that way?
01:33
And do guys kind of do they understand that and know that like, OK, guys can lead
01:39
in a lot of different ways, even though they might not be on the field every day?
01:42
Yeah, I think it's look, basically we're in the clubhouse for 12 hours a day pretty much.
01:46
And so you're on the field for a very minute part of that.
01:49
And that's where a lot of the leadership comes in.
01:51
It's not always the on field.
01:53
You don't see like the quarterbacks like, OK, directing things or that guy on the sideline,
01:57
make sure they pick the guy up.
01:58
It's a lot more in the clubhouse, whether it be after a bad at bat,
02:02
after a bad inning, after a bad couple of days, a bad stretch.
02:05
It's that guy that goes up and can kind of take control of that,
02:08
but also let guys know when they're stepping out of line a little bit.
02:11
That's that's where I feel like baseball is a little bit different,
02:13
where it's a lot more clubhouse stuff.
02:15
It's I'd say similar to kind of the way hockey is.
02:18
It's like you have a period, OK, this guy messed up in that period.
02:21
You'll see the guy go over, whether it be mid game, whether it be post game.
02:24
It's like you see him go over as a reliever.
02:26
I can't really go mid game.
02:28
So it's you do what you can.
02:29
But, yeah, I don't think I don't think playing is in the do it.
02:33
You look at like a guy like Johnny Gomez.
02:34
I feel like he was classified as a very, very good leader.
02:37
And he was brought onto multiple teams, multiple World Series winning teams
02:40
to be that guy while not playing an everyday role.
02:43
So it's yeah, it's I think it's it's more about what making sure that the guys respect you,
02:48
not just listen to you, but actually respect you in that regard.
02:51
You don't want to be I'd much prefer to be respected than liked.
02:54
Right. Is Alex Bregman that guy in an everyday role?
02:57
Is he that kind of leader guy?
02:58
That guy? Yeah, I believe so.
03:01
I mean, I've spent a little bit of time with him here and a little bit of time earlier.
03:04
But it's yeah, he's he's the guy you want to go to about anything baseball related.
03:09
He is phenomenal.
03:10
Like, it's incredible the knowledge that he has.
03:12
I mean, he was rattling off things that I did in 2017 the other night.
03:16
And I'm like, yeah, we had this, this and this.
03:17
And he's like, oh, that's cool.
03:21
I didn't know any of that.
03:22
But that's great.
03:24
But yeah, it's like he's he's phenomenal that I think both him and Bueller
03:27
bring that sort of arrogance and confidence.
03:29
And yeah, it's bordering on arrogance as far as the way they they hold themselves.
03:34
It's not that way in the clubhouse, but on field and the way they are approaching the game,
03:38
it's it's it's borderlining arrogance.
03:39
And I think that's going to be a great thing for this team
03:41
because we do have a really young team.
03:43
And with the amount of young guys on this team,
03:45
they need to be able to see that that winning mentality come through every day.
03:49
And seeing guys like that, that have won multiple World Series,
03:52
it can definitely take hold.
03:55
Thanks for taking the time this morning.
03:56
You're out. Yes.
03:57
Can I just ask, because I'm on edge of my seat.
03:59
Did you get the sink put in the dugout?
04:01
Because you asked last year that you wanted to be able to wash your hands more.
04:05
So it was a portable one last year.
04:06
They got it got done after my wife may or may not have mentioned it to a
04:11
assistant GM strongly about, hey,
04:15
you've got to give the cancer kid somewhere to wash his hands.
04:18
Yep. So, yeah, we went out there.
04:21
Yeah, there was one over there now.
04:22
The hot water was scalding.
04:24
So I found that out pretty early.
04:26
And then, yeah, but it was out there.
04:28
It was enjoyable. Good.
04:30
And you're great on that.
04:32
Cancer free. Yeah.
04:33
Yeah. So I have my blood work done before I came out here.
04:36
I've got my my two year scan probably May 5th,
04:40
just because the way it works around our schedule.
04:42
And so, yeah, that'll be an off day at home.
04:45
And in between two home series and get it done over there at Dana Farber,
04:48
I think, get that knocked out.
04:50
And that'll be my two year remission.
04:53
Awesome. And it's a lot more fun than the alternative.
04:55
Yeah. All right. Well, thanks a lot.
04:57
We appreciate it. Good luck the rest of the way through.
04:58
We'll see you back in Boston on Friday, April 4th.
