00:00Fearing arrest, a handful of foreigners used guerrilla tactics to avoid arrest by the Immigration

00:08Department in an enforcement operation at the Meru Market Complex clung early Saturday

00:14morning.

00:15The operation, which began at 5.30am, saw some foreigners crawling into narrow drains

00:20to hide while some climbed to the roof of shops to avoid being detected by the authorities.

00:26A total of 598 foreigners were arrested out of 630 individuals inspected, all of whom

00:33were aged between 17 and 57 years old.

00:37A few of the foreigners involved claimed they were United Nations High Commission for Refugees

00:42cardholders to avoid arrest.

00:45Those arrested will be placed at the Seminyi Immigration Depot for investigation and follow-up

00:50action.

00:52Among the offences identified were not having identification documents, violating past conditions,

00:58overstaying, unrecognised cardholders and other offences that violate the Immigration

01:04Act.
