Marc Platt reflects on waiting more than 20 years for the film adaptation of "Wicked"

00:00this is so part of me having read this novel in the 1990s and thinking what a great movie this

00:06would be and then starting to develop it as a film and then having Stephen Schwartz call me and say

00:11would you consider making it a musical and then going of course it wants to be a musical and then

00:16putting it on stage and then and then I waited 20 22 years since it opened on Broadway it's

00:22been probably 22 years it's enjoying its best year ever on Broadway I might say but I waited

00:29a long time for a number of reasons one mostly because I didn't want to screw it up and I felt

00:34pressure on myself and an obligation to the fans who have tended and protected and loved these

00:40characters have meant so much to them in the story and and so the bar was very high for me

00:46and part of me was insecure and I wanted to acquire all the skill as a producer and have the

00:53vision in my head of what it could be and what I wanted to be and all the resources I wanted to do

00:59it so I waited for the right time those are all the things I knew why I was waiting what I didn't

01:04know that I was waiting for was first of all for the stars and the rainbows to align that

01:11John Chu would be available and raise his hand and he and I would connect in that way and I

01:16didn't know that I was waiting for these two women who are the only ones who could play these roles

01:22that could be there
