London councils to receive emergency funding

Six struggling London councils are set to receive emergency funding.

00:00Out of 30 councils nationwide that are due to receive emergency funding due to exceptional

00:07financial hardship, six of those councils are here in the capital. With the money that

00:13is being given, intended to protect local services, the Ministry of Housing, Communities

00:20and Local Government confirms that more councils had requested exceptional financial support.

00:29This year than since the process was established in 2020. However, not all requests were approved.

00:37Let me talk you through the list of councils in London that will receive this emergency

00:43funding. Croydon, which tops the list at £136 million, Havering at £88 million, Barnet

00:54at just under £56 million, Newham at just over £52 million and Haringey at £37 million.

01:01Finally, Enfield, which is due to receive £10 million. In addition to this, Lambeth

01:07Council is also being given £40 million specifically to manage financial pressures within its housing

01:14revenue account. These struggling councils in London are not particularly off-brand with

01:21the rest of the nation. Councils across Britain have been facing chronic financial struggles

01:28over the last few years. Local Government Minister Jim McMahon said we are under no

01:35illusion of the state of council finances and have been clear from the outset on our

01:41commitment to get councils back on their feet.
