People on the street: Speeding and punishments

We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about speeding and how they would respond to increased speeding statistics.

00:00Hi, I'm Theo with Manchester World. Today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking people about

00:04speeding. And the reason for that is speeding is on the rise. We want to know if people want to

00:09see more traffic cameras, more police out on the streets trying to prevent speeding, more fines,

00:13or whether they think that actually the best way to approach it is through education,

00:17through encouragement rather than punishment. I'm a pedestrian, I don't drive, so you know,

00:22I've got a vested interest in being safe and other people being safe. Manchester city centre

00:27has been basically made one way everywhere, so it's actually really difficult to drive in city

00:31centre, which is good. I mean, I live in city centre, so it's good that it's harder to drive

00:37in city centre. I think speed cameras are a really good way to prevent speeding because people,

00:42they slow down, they do slow down, they see a camera and slow down for it. I think people

00:46probably speed down when they're coming up, but then as soon as they're gone, so probably the

00:51fines are the way forward. And if people are concerned about it in terms of the drivers,

00:55there's apps now that tell you where speed cameras are, so you can avoid it if you want to.
