00:00US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he plans to impose 25% tariffs on auto

00:08imports as well as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.

00:11It comes after he already announced the same rate on steel and aluminium imports.

00:17Trump has long railed against what he calls the unfair treatment of US automotive exports

00:22in foreign markets.

00:25The European Union collects a 10% duty on vehicle imports, four times the US passenger

00:31car tariff rate of 2.5%.

00:33You know, the EU has been very unfair to us.

00:36We have a deficit of $350 billion.

00:38They don't take our cars.

00:40They don't take our farm products.

00:42They don't take almost anything.

00:44They take very little.

00:46And we're going to have to straighten that out.

00:47And we will.

00:48I have no doubt about it.

00:49Trump claims the playing field is tilted against American companies as other countries usually

00:55tax American exports at a higher rate than America taxes theirs.

00:59But many economists that criticize the move argue that the additional tax on importers

01:04usually gets passed on to consumers.
