Majid Al Futtaim launched Carrefour City+ in Dubai to offer customers a new contactless shopping experience with no check-out counters and limited human interaction. Powered by Artificial Intelligence, customers can now use their phones to access the store, pick up their desired items and simply walk out without having to queue and pay at the cash register.

Located at the iconic Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, the futuristic store utilises active scanning sensors to accurately identify thousands of products and update shopping baskets virtually, improving inventory management and simplifying shopping for customers. This highly advanced technology enhances efficiency, convenience, and speed, and represents a huge leap forward for grocery retail in the UAE and the wider region.

Carrefour City+ stocks over 1,300 items including snacks, beverages, packaged food and food-to-go meals as well as basic essentials.

00:00We're here trying to get a feel of the new Carrefour City Plus store that apparently
00:06lets you buy all the groceries without having to meet any cashier, having to go through any
00:12staff member. Apparently it's all powered by artificial intelligence and you just go there,
00:17grab your stuff and step out all with the help of an app and we're gonna try it out ourselves.
00:25At the beginning you need to download the app so I'm gonna do that now. I'm just gonna scan the
00:29QR code. So I just registered and downloaded the app and added my card and that's all I
00:44need. I just need to enter. So luckily we are all to ourselves today in the store. We have
00:59all of this to choose from and we're alone so I think I'm gonna get some snacks.
01:04So I'm gonna grab some chips and what they were telling me is that the AI system works with
01:17scanning. So what it does is it knows my shape, it scans the whole grocery store,
01:22it knows my shape, it knows the shape of every single item and the fact that they're there
01:27and it keeps scanning. So right now when I pick this chip up and there's an empty space on the
01:32shelf, it knows that this packet of chips is missing and I'll be charged for it as soon as
01:38I walk out. And let's also grab something to drink, water, something to eat, something to drink
01:51and let's look around. So it has everything like a basic grocery store needs. So if you're
02:00particularly in a hurry, you can just come here, grab your items, grab ingredients for your dinner
02:06and just walk out. So if I've picked up an item and I changed my mind that I don't want it,
02:14you know how we just keep it back in the store, do that exact thing here and it's all fine.
02:19Just keep it back and walk out. It only detects anything you have walked out with and the payment
02:25will be deducted in 10 minutes. You'll get a notification on your email and also on the app,
02:31the map app and you'll know exactly what you've paid for and your whole receipt will be there.
02:40Just to add to your experience, they even offer free coffee. So that's great. You can pick that
02:47up while leaving. So I think I'm done and this was the easiest, most quickest shopping experience.
02:53I just went there, grabbed my items and I'm gonna walk out. I think this is the future of shopping.
02:58There are no queues, which is the main reason why people avoid big grocery stores and there's no
03:04stuff. There's no human interaction and I think it's the best thing, especially in a pandemic.
