Quick commerce apps are redefining the retail game in India, allowing customers to get hold of not only food and drink but anything else from clothes to iPhones -- within minutes. At a warehouse managed by online grocer BigBasket in central Mumbai, employees work with military-like precision to pull off deliveries in just 10 minutes. These warehouses are known within the industry as "dark stores", a reference to being closed off to customers. Local tech companies have poured in billions to set up these nifty logistical networks across big cities, fuelling India's rapid shopping industry.

00:00it's not very expensive to order in generally even if you order a small cart or even if you
00:13need to pay a delivery it's it's not a very big add-on amount you're okay to pay that amount for
00:20the convenience of having things delivered to your doorstep the reason customers love this
00:24is because one it removes the pain of planning no customer wants to plan wait for the orders to get
00:29delivered and then wait for it to see if everything has been received they love the fact that it comes
00:34immediately they love the fact that they can get everything that they want and different products
00:39all in one single basket and this instant gratification is the cornerstone of the change in
00:45customer behavior in quick commerce the number of people that we have within a one and a half two
00:49kilometer radius of any dark store is very high so the revenue potential in that catchment is very high
00:56that doesn't happen in low population density economies the second thing lack of retail density
01:02we do not have enough dark stores or even physical stores per thousand people in this retail urban
01:09catchments so so this addresses a very large unmet need today in these economies the third is the fact
01:17that we have a very low manpower cost compared to developed countries this makes it affordable to
01:22send somebody to deliver the order because there's a one-to-one delivery and and to come back and
01:27again deliver and this these three factors make it far more affordable i think the convenience of
01:34having everything in one app as opposed to me going to different stores i might have to go
01:41to the local dairy first or then go to the vegetable guy go to the grocer go to the fruit guy you know as
01:48opposed to just sit on the app just or just press in a bunch of keys and all of it comes uh delivered
01:53to home um but yeah it it does make me lazy
