Now let's get this started here with extreme storm chaser Aaron Jayjack,
00:03
following this latest winter storm blasting its way across the mid-Atlantic. Aaron,
00:09
how's it going out there? Looks like that snow is really accumulating.
00:15
Oh, it's really dumping here in Washington, D.C., and in fact, you might be able to hear
00:20
they've already started cleanup here. You can see back behind me the snowblower going right now,
00:24
trying to clear the sidewalks here. Really starting to accumulate here in Washington,
00:28
D.C. Even these roadways a little bit earlier, about an hour ago, this roadway was just wet,
00:33
no accumulation. They've laid down a lot of salt in this area, but these snowfall rates,
00:38
looking about that one inch per hour snowfall rate or so, are really starting to stack up here,
00:42
making quite a nasty mess here in Washington, D.C. this evening. Now we are expecting around
00:47
that three to six inches mark here in Washington, D.C. We've got reduced visibility. Of course,
00:53
the sun has set. It's getting dark here, also reducing visibility, but before that sun set,
00:58
I was looking out towards the White House, towards the Washington Monument area. Very hard to see
01:03
those significant buildings here in Washington, D.C. due to the reduced visibility from all of
01:08
this snow, and we will be tracking this storm here. I will be here in Washington, D.C. tonight
01:13
and through tomorrow because tomorrow it looks like we will get another round of winter weather,
01:18
looking more of like a wet event, so more of a mixed precip, possibly rain. So all this snow
01:24
you see falling here now in Washington, D.C. will likely melt off by sometime late tomorrow as that
01:29
rain comes through this area tomorrow, but tonight right here in Washington, D.C., it's quite a
01:34
beautiful night. This is actually a gorgeous city to be in, in a winter storm, in the snow to see
01:39
everything blanketed by the snow. Lots of lights here, lights lighting up like the Washington
01:44
Monument, really make things look photogenic here in the nation's capital. We will be here
01:49
this evening, and I'll be live with you guys through this event. Back to you guys.
01:55
All right, Aaron, looking at the roadways right there, for that snowfall that's fallen so far,
02:00
is that more of a compacting snow that can create some travel issues, or is it more that slushy kind
02:05
which is good because that allows the road crews to be able to remove it a lot more efficiently?
02:10
Yeah, right now it is that wet, slushy snow. I have been seeing a lot of crews of snowplows,
02:20
they're actually running in teams of like three or four trying to clear the roadways here,
02:25
but it is a wet, slushy snow. It's actually not too bad to drive on, your tires can get down
02:30
through it, down to the roadway. So not too bad of a situation here in Washington, D.C. We are
02:36
past peak rush hour, so most people are home now, and it looks like we'll continue to get
02:41
this snow through the evening and overnight hours. Back to you guys. Thanks for your reporting there,
02:45
Aaron Jayjack live in Washington, D.C. amid pretty significant snowstorm, the second big one of the
02:50
season here, 7.2 inches back in early January, and we got another one that may rival that here
02:57
later this evening and tonight with the second big storm of the season. We've had a couple of
03:02
nickel and dime type storms in between as well. The deep blues from D.C. south to just a little
03:07
bit north of Richmond, south of Fredericksburg, that's where some of the most impressive snowfall
03:12
rates can be found, and some of this is increasing into south Delaware and central Delaware as well.
03:17
The eastern shore of Maryland is seeing a lot of this as well. It's been a pretty good snow
03:22
season there in areas like Tangier Island here and the Chesapeake Bay, and areas around Harrisonburg,
03:27
Charlottesville. Still the snow, you have to head farther south and southwest to get into the icy
03:32
zone here down into areas around Blacksburg and Roanoke. Heading a big step farther south,
03:37
you're going to find the warmer side of things where we have some showers. We do have the
03:40
lightning indicators turned on, not seeing any lightning right now. We've had some little flare
03:45
ups at times earlier in this loop. You can see one of these cells produce some lightning here and
03:49
there. At this point, it could be a little bit of strong wind associated with this band pulling
03:54
north of Montgomery, Alabama, eastbound, but really it's all about the snow.
