Brave Kids Walk 282 Kilometers Across Taiwan

A group of children successfully completed a 282-kilometer journey across Taiwan, traveling from east to west. Their adventure took them through mountainous regions, with a total elevation gain of over 4,000 meters.

00:00Snacks, a pair of sunglasses, a team flag, and she is ready to roll.

00:08Twelve-year-old Li Yan is on a mission.

00:14To complete a journey few of her peers have made,

00:17traveling hundreds of kilometers by foot over high mountain passes

00:22and across rugged terrain to traverse the width of Taiwan.

00:31For the past three years, Li has sacrificed part of her winter vacation

00:36to take on this challenge.

00:38She is not the only one making the trip,

00:41but is one of the few that have taken part since it started.

00:50The journey begins at National Donghua University in eastern Taiwan

00:54and ends at the Gaomei Wetlands on the west coast,

00:57taking place over 16 days.

01:00The route covers around 280 kilometers,

01:03with a total elevation gain of over 4,400 meters.

01:27Beyond teaching them basic survival skills,

01:42this project also encourages kids to push themselves to their limits.

01:47For any adult, this journey would be a serious challenge,

01:51but these kids are taking it in their stride

01:53with the most challenging day covering up to 35 kilometers,

01:56walking from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

02:02Their coach says that day was the most unforgettable part of the journey.

02:06One of the kids had such severe muscle soreness

02:09he was forced to use a wheelchair,

02:12but that did not stop the team from going forward.

02:24As the group reached the finish line,

02:27parents waited eagerly to congratulate them on their accomplishments.

02:36Many expressing how profoundly this experience has affected their children.

02:53Now their adventure has come to an end.
