Communities prepare for further flooding as warnings continue

Residents in low lying areas of Rockhampton in central Queensland are under flood watch with the Fitzroy River set to reach a moderate flood level on Wednesday. Flows have been slowly moving through the catchment following a deluge of rain in northern and western parts of the state.

00:00Look, as you can see, the Fitzroy River is starting to rise.

00:05At the latest height, it was around 5.9 metres.

00:08We're standing on the veranda of the Fitzroy Motorboat Club.

00:11What ordinarily is some car parks has been flooded with water,

00:14but as you said, it is going to be a moderate level,

00:16so not that major level.

00:18Those flows have been coming from the Mackenzie River

00:20for quite a few days.

00:21We've known for a few days that it's been coming

00:23after those deluges of rain in Claremont.

00:25The flood watch and act warnings are in place

00:28or places like Depot Hill, Narembra and Bursica.

00:31We're expecting about 480 homes to be impacted,

00:34but that will mostly just be waters in backyards.

00:37And so what are the next couple of days going to look like?

00:40Yeah, so we're expecting that peak to hit on Wednesday.

00:43Already we've had some minor roads closed,

00:46car parks, sports fields, and some of those are closed already,

00:49so we expect to see those flows to come through

00:51and see some more riverside facilities come up.

00:54But as a reminder, as always, if it's flooded, forget it.

00:56There are sand backing stations open across Rockhampton and Yipoon,

00:59so those who still need to prepare their properties are advised

01:02to get in now and to prepare those properties.

01:05At the moment, the airport is not expected to close.

01:08It has to get to quite a high level for that to happen,

01:11and the council has another barrier they can put in place,

01:14which they haven't done yet.

01:15So we're not expecting that airport to close.

01:17And the floods that everyone talks about is 2011 floods,

01:20and we're not expecting anywhere near as high as those ones.

01:24But just a reminder, as always, if it's flooded, forget it,

01:26and to stay out of those floodwaters.
